Adrian scooped Nyx off the pavement so fast that its claws snagged his sleeve.

The shadow snapped back beneath its paws like a dropped rope.

“The sun,” he said. “It’s the angle of the sun.”

“Sure,” said Tobi. “The sun does that.” He hadn’t moved, and the playfulness had drained out of his face. What was left looked younger and more careful, like a kid who had just realized the ice under him wasn’t as thick as it looked.

A baker’s cart rattled past the end of the alley. Tobi waited until the wheels faded.

“Walk with me. Not far. I’m not going to scream.”

They went down Cutler Row side by side, past shuttered stalls and a man hosing down the pavement outside a laundry. Adrian kept one arm clamped over his coat. Nyx had gone rigid inside it, offended in every muscle.

“Yesterday afternoon,” Tobi said, “two men from the Crown came into the Appraisers’ Hall. Black-and-crimson, polite, the kind that never raise their voices. They asked the senior appraisers one question. Had any of them ever gotten an empty read.”

“A what?”

“Not weak. Not hidden. Empty. Like a talent that isn’t there.” Tobi kept his eyes forward. “Old Hobb laughed in their faces. Said everything gives off something, even a rock. The Crown men didn’t laugh. They left a sealed notice for the board and said it would be posted today.”

He finally looked at Adrian.

“And at six this morning I touched a stray fox, and it came back empty.”

The street was very quiet. Adrian could feel his pulse in the cut on his hand.

“What do you want?”

“Honestly? A job.” Tobi had the grace to wince. “I’m E-rank provisional. I need forty verified appraisals before the Hall will license me, and nobody lets a provisional touch anything valuable. I’ve got eleven. I’m very good and I’m very broke.” He shrugged. “You found something. You’re going to keep finding things, I think. Cores, scraps, materials, whatever your fox eats. I’d like to be the one who tells you what they’re worth. No f*e. Just first look, and a cut when I’m right.”

“And in return you stay quiet.”

“I’m not asking what it is.” Tobi held up both hands. “I’d really rather not know. The less I know, the less I can say if someone asks me nicely.”

Adrian stopped walking. “Why would you do this?”

“Because yesterday I watched an F-rank walk out of the Awakening Hall like he’d already planned his next move. And this morning he crawls out of the Gardens at dawn, stinking of moth dust, carrying something the Crown is looking for.” Tobi grinned, crooked and a little shaky. “I’m curious about which of us is crazier.”

“I don’t owe anyone favors.”

“Good. Then it’s not a favor. It’s a contract. Verbal and very cheap.”

Adrian looked at the offered hand for a long moment. Then he took it.

“Keep it out of the sun,” Tobi said, already backing away. His voice had dropped. “Whatever it is, I don’t think it’s the daylight that likes it.”

Mina was sitting on the apartment stairs with her coat on.

She was ten, and she had walked down two flights in her slippers, with her breath rasping, and had sat there since before dawn waiting for the front door to open. When it did, she looked at him, and her whole face crumpled and then pulled itself back together in a way that hurt to watch.

“You said before morning.”

“I know.”

“I counted,” she said. “Past a thousand. I stopped when I got to nine hundred and forty because I couldn’t tell if I was counting breaths or the time.”

“Mina”

She hit him in the stomach. Not hard. Then she hung on to his coat with both fists and pressed her forehead against his ribs, and he felt the hot, small, furious shaking of someone who’d been very brave for too long.

Nyx wriggled out through the collar, climbed onto Adrian’s shoulder, and sat there radiating unmistakable awkwardness.

“I was stupid,” Adrian said into her hair. “I didn’t read the warning properly. Nyx had to come get me. It nearly cost it everything.”

Mina went still. She lifted her face. She looked at Nyx, and then she looked at her brother’s bandaged hand, and something grown-up and exhausted came into her eyes.

“You came back,” she said at last. “That’s the deal. You always come back.”

“I will.”

“Say it properly.”

“I will always come back.”

She sniffed, wiped her nose on her sleeve, and nodded. Then she turned to Nyx and said gravely, “Thank you for finding him,” and Nyx, with great dignity, looked away.

That evening, with Mina asleep and the lamp turned low, Adrian sat at the kitchen table and finally opened the tab that had been pulsing at the edge of his sight since the Gardens.

COMPANION CODEX

Name: Nyx

Species: [ACCESS DENIED]

Rank: [ACCESS DENIED]

Essence: 20% (Stabilized)

Evolution Branches: ??? [LOCKED] ??? [LOCKED] ??? [LOCKED]

Lineage Fragments: 0/9

Below them, in smaller text:

Evolution requires four conditions: Level, Bond, Catalyst, and Trial.

Lineage Fragments are earned through deeds, discoveries, and shared memory.

He read it three times. It didn’t explain anything. It just made the walls of the thing visible, the way a floor plan shows rooms you haven’t been in yet.

Then the Level 2 notification, which he’d barely seen in the tunnel:

FUNCTION UNLOCKED: DAILY TRAINING

One training quest is issued each day. Rewards scale with consistency.

DAILY QUEST: BOND ATTUNEMENT

Twenty minutes of shared focus with your companion.

Reward: Bond Points x 5

And finally, the item he’d saved for last.

[ Skill Seed (Unidentified) ]

Plant in a companion. Germinates when conditions are met. Conditions: [HIDDEN]

He thought about it for a while. Then he held out his palm and the seed formed there, a small dark thing the size of a grain of rice, giving off a faint warmth.

“This is going to be yours,” he told Nyx. “If you want it.”

Nyx, curled on the opposite chair with its tail wrapped around its feet, looked at the seed for a long time. Then it stretched out one paw and touched it, very precisely, once.

The seed dissolved into violet light and sank into Nyx’s chest.

[ Skill Seed planted. Germination: pending. ]

Nyx looked deeply, enormously annoyed.

“I know. Sorry.”

The attunement was awkward.

He sat on the floor and closed his eyes, as the instructions said. Nyx refused to come near him. It stalked to the far corner of the room, turned its back, and lay down facing the wall, and the bond between them thrummed with injured pride.

But after ten minutes, the tail came across the floorboards and settled against his ankle. Just the tip. Not looking.

He kept very still.

The bond opened a little further. This time it wasn’t the gate, or the ring. It was sound: a low, layered hum, like a hundred voices holding one note, vibrating through cold stone. And somewhere far away, a pinprick of warmth that wasn’t sunlight. It felt more like a promise.

[ DING! ]

Daily Quest complete. Bond Points x 5.

Bond Resonance: 19%

And then, after a pause:

[ LINEAGE FRAGMENT RECOVERED: 1/9 ]

Entry: “of the Threshold.”

The words glowed for three seconds and faded.

Adrian sat on the floor of his own kitchen, with his heart going, and looked at the creature whose tail still lay against his ankle. It had gone to sleep.

A what of the Threshold?

The next morning he walked to the clinic to renew Mina’s inhaler. The pharmacist didn’t look up. The Row was busy, carts and shoppers and the smell of frying dough, and he was nearly past the lamppost on the corner before he saw the paper.

It was pasted at eye level. There was one on every post along the street, still wet at the edges.

Heavy cream stock. The black-and-crimson fangs of the Crown stamped across the top.

NOTICE OF REWARD

The Crown of Fangs seeks information on any beast that returns an EMPTY READ under appraisal. Describes: small, fox-bodied, dark-furred, violet-eyed, smoke-tailed.

REWARD: 5,000 MARKS

Deliver alive.

Below it was a sketch, carefully drawn in black ink. Pointed ears. Narrow muzzle. A tail that frayed into smoke at the tip.

Whoever drew it had held the creature in their hands.

Five thousand marks. Six months of Mina’s treatment. All he had to do was open his coat.

He stood very still, and against his ribs, something small and warm breathed in and out.

  • CHAPTER 10: INTO THE HOLLOWWOOD

The Hollowwood did not look dangerous from the gate.It looked like a very old forest that someone had taken good care of. The path ran between oaks wide enough to hide a wagon, and the early light came down through the canopy in soft gold shafts. Birds were singing. Somewhere ahead, water ran over stone.“Pretty,” said Tobi, in the voice of a man who did not trust it.Eighty-eight students stood in a loose crowd before the iron gate, divided into teams of four. Every team had a beast. Wolves, hawks, a pair of armored badgers, something with six legs that kept licking its own eyes. Instructors in gray coats walked the line checking collars and handing out signal flares.“One flare per team,” Instructor Dane said, stopping in front of Team Nineteen. “Fire it and the run ends. Your instructors will retrieve you. You fail, but you live.” She looked at each of them in turn. “The Hollowwood is managed. The wards hold nearly everything above D-rank out. Nearly. I would like to see all four

Team Nineteen was posted last, on a separate sheet, pinned a little crooked below the others.Adrian read it twice in the crowd outside the main hall. Someone’s got a sense of humor.”Tobi, beside him, let out a long breath. “I’d like it noted that I’m not offended. I’m only extremely, extremely nervous.”Adrian said nothing. He was looking at the three names under his own.Valen. Holt. He knew them both by sight. Everyone did. Kira Valen had been the daughter of a minor guild house until it collapsed two years ago, and now she was at Halcyon on a scholarship with a sharp tongue and a k

  • CHAPTER 8: TWO WEEKS

“Again,” said Tobi.Adrian rolled onto his stomach, spat sand, and got his palms under him. The Training Grounds of Halcyon Academy were a ring of packed earth behind the east wing, walled in old brick and lit by the last orange of the afternoon. Access had come with the registration reward, and for eleven days he’d used every minute of it.Across the ring, a gloam rat the size of a terrier shook itself out of the net he’d dropped on it, snapped the cord with one jerk of its jaws, and came straight at him.“Nyx!”The bond pulled. Black smoke ran across the sand ahead of the rat’s feet, and Nyx stepped out of it two yards to the left, small and sharp-eared, and bit the rat’s flank. The rat shrieked, swung around, and Adrian hit it across the skull with a weighted training staff he’d bought secondhand for six marks. It folded. He stood over it, wheezing.[ DING! ]Gloam Rat defeated.Experience gained. System Level 4 → 5 progress: 88%“That’s the fourth one,” Tobi said from the wall, wh

  • CHAPTER 7: THE REGISTRY

Harlan told him almost nothing.“The Threshold is what the Wardens guarded,” he said, closing the black ledger with both hands, like a man shutting a coffin. “Your father believed something would come through it one day. I never asked what, and he never said. That’s the truth, boy. It’s the whole truth, and it isn’t enough.”“That’s not an answer.”“No. It’s a door.” Harlan slid the ash-iron collar across the desk. “You can walk through it later. Tomorrow you walk into the Registry, and you put this on your fox, and you say pup every time anyone asks.”Adrian had wanted to argue. He had held the ledger until his knuckles ached. But the old man’s eyes were so tired that he’d set the book down instead, and picked up the collar. It was lighter than it looked. The Registry Office occupied the east wing of Halcyon Academy, a long marble hall with high windows and a queue that wound twice around the room.Four days had passed. • CHAPTER 6: THE NIGHT BOOK

Harlan didn’t say another word until Mina was asleep. He stayed on the landing with the mop bucket while Adrian got her water, checked her breathing, and tucked the blanket back under her chin. Nyx had refused to leave the bed. It lay across her ankles with its eyes half open, the way a guard dog lies when it has decided the job is its own.[ Companion essence: 18% ]Two points gone, just from hiding under that blanket. • CHAPTER 5: THE ASSAY LENS

Adrian ran the last two blocks with the inhaler in one fist and the poster still burning behind his eyes. He’d torn it off the lamppost without thinking. Now it was crumpled in his coat pocket, and the sound of crisp cloth against his ribs seemed loud enough to carry. At the corner of Cutler Row he slowed, because someone had parked a black-and-crimson wagon outside the tailor’s shop. Two men stood on the pavement. A third was knocking on the door of the building next to his. They’re going door to door.Mina was upstairs with Nyx, and the building had one staircase. He didn’t run. Running would look like a reason. He walked past the wagon at a pace he hoped was bored, nodded at the nearest hunter, and slipped through the shop’s side entrance and up the stairs two at a time the moment he was out of sight.[ Warning: Hostile scan detected nearby. ]The System’s pane flickered to life in the corner of his vision, faint and blue, and under it the bond hummed with sharp, wary attention.
