Ethan Cole stood beneath the enormous crystal chandelier of Cole International, staring at the man who had just ordered security to remove him from the company.

The boardroom was silent, but the expressions around the table spoke louder than words. Several directors avoided his eyes, while others watched him with thin smiles that made it obvious they had already chosen their side.

His uncle, Richard Cole, sat at the head of the table with his hands calmly folded.

“Ethan, you have been given enough opportunities,” Richard said. “Your performance has become a liability to this company, and the board has voted to terminate your position effective immediately.”

Ethan slowly looked around the room.

“Terminate my position?”

His voice remained controlled despite the anger rising inside him.

“I built the digital division that generated almost forty percent of this company's recent revenue. I brought in the investors who kept us alive during the expansion. You cannot simply remove me because you suddenly decided that I am inconvenient.”

Richard gave a quiet laugh.

“You built nothing by yourself. Your family name opened every door you walked through.”

Those words struck deeper than Ethan wanted to admit.

For years, he had heard variations of the same accusation. People believed everything he achieved had been handed to him because of his family's wealth. They never saw the nights he spent working until exhaustion forced him to sleep at his desk.

They never saw how hard he had fought to prove that he deserved his position.

Then Richard pushed a document across the table.

“This contains the board's decision. Sign it, and you will receive a small settlement. Refuse, and we will take the matter to court.”

Ethan picked up the document and scanned it.

His eyes narrowed.

The agreement transferred his remaining shares to Richard's holding company for almost nothing.

“You expect me to sign this?”

“I expect you to understand that you have lost.”

Before Ethan could respond, the doors opened.

His cousin, Marcus, walked into the room wearing an expensive suit and carrying himself like the new owner of everything around him.

Marcus stopped beside Richard and smiled.

“Cousin, you should have accepted your position months ago. Some people are born to lead, while others are only useful until someone better arrives.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You?”

Marcus's smile widened.

“The board appointed me as the new executive director.”

A few directors applauded.

Ethan felt something inside him go cold.

He had spent five years building the division Marcus had just inherited. Now the man who had contributed almost nothing was receiving the position because Richard controlled the board.

Ethan placed the document back on the table.

“I will not sign.”

Richard's expression hardened.

“Then leave with nothing.”

He walked toward the door without giving them another word.

Behind him, Marcus laughed.
