THE SCHOOL ATTACK
It happened during fourth period. Elias was staring at the window again, watching the threads around the oak tree in the courtyard. They were calmer today, steady in the afternoon light. He had almost convinced himself the day would be normal. Then the lights flickered. Not the usual flicker of old wiring. This was different. The light bent, as if something had passed between the bulbs and the room. The temperature dropped by degrees. Elias's breath misted in the air. Around him, students kept working. No one looked up. No one noticed. Then the sound came. A low hum, like a machine buried deep beneath the floor. It vibrated through the desks, through the chairs, through Elias's bones. The threads around the room went taut, then snapped. The lights went out. For a moment, there was only darkness and the sound of confused voices. Then the emergency lights kicked on, casting everything in pale red. "What's going on?" someone asked. No one answered. Elias stood. His chest was
THE CONFRONTATION
Elias did not move. The alley behind the school was quiet, the afternoon sun casting long shadows across the cracked pavement. Adrian stood a few feet away, his arms still crossed, his expression unreadable. The threads around him twisted and pulsed like living things. “You’ve been having dreams about the door,” Elias said slowly. “For how long?” “A few weeks.” Adrian’s voice was calm, but his jaw was tight. “Maybe longer. I don’t remember when they started.” “What happens in the dreams?” “You’re there. Standing in front of a door with no handle. Sometimes you reach for it. Sometimes you just stare at it.” He paused. “Sometimes you open it.” A chill ran down Elias’s spine. “What’s on the other side?” “I don’t know. I always wake up before I see.” Elias leaned against the opposite wall. His legs felt unsteady. “Why didn’t you tell anyone?” Adrian laughed, but there was no humor in it. “Tell anyone what? That I dream about a kid I’ve never met opening a magical door? They’d
THE NEW STUDENT
The new student arrived on a Tuesday. Elias noticed him immediately. Not because he was loud, though he was. Not because he walked into homeroom like he already owned it, though he did that too. Elias noticed him because the threads around him were wrong. They should have been steady. Most people’s threads were. They ran through them in clean, straight lines, bright and strong. But this boy’s threads twisted. They bent around him like light around a heavy object, warping in ways Elias had never seen before. “Adrian Cross,” the teacher announced. “He’s transferring from Westbrook.” Adrian Cross grinned at the room. He was tall and athletic, with messy brown hair and hazel eyes that seemed to take in everything at once. His posture was relaxed, but there was something sharp beneath it. Something watchful. “Hey,” he said. “I’m Adrian. I’m new. Try not to make it weird.” A few students laughed. The teacher sighed. Elias kept staring at the threads. “Elias?” Lyra’s voice pulled him
THE AFTERMATH
The walk home felt longer than usual. Elias’s legs were heavy, his thoughts scattered. The image of the door from his dream lingered at the edges of his mind. It had no handle. It stood alone in a void of threads. And it was not locked. He did not know what that meant. He was not sure he wanted to. The streets of Ashwick were quiet. The streetlights buzzed softly. A dog barked somewhere in the distance. Ordinary sounds. An ordinary night. But Elias could feel the second moon above the clouds, a faint pressure at the top of his skull. The watcher was still there. It was always there now. He turned onto his street. His house looked the same as it always did. Warm light glowed from the kitchen window. The porch light was on. His mother’s car sat in the driveway. He stopped at the end of the walkway. The warmth in his chest pulsed once, then settled. The threads, he thought. They’re everywhere. He could almost see them now, even with his eyes open. Faint lines of silver light ran
THE FIRST USE
The warmth in his chest did not fade. Elias sat on the edge of his bed, one hand pressed against his sternum. Pale morning light filtered through the window. The house was quiet. Somewhere downstairs, his mother moved around the kitchen, and the smell of toast drifted up the stairs. But his mind was still trapped in the dream. You are not the first to see the threads. He closed his eyes. The memory of the dream was already fading, but the feeling remained. The threads were still there. Not visible. Not tangible. But present, like a quiet hum beneath the world. He stood and dressed slowly. His body ached from the night before. His hands still remembered the weight of Lyra’s grip. His mind replayed the blank face of the Forgotten Resident. More dangerous than I thought. He didn’t know what that meant. But he intended to find out. ⸻ He met Lyra after school. She was waiting at the edge of the school grounds, her bag slung over one shoulder. Her face brightened with a mixtur
THE FORGOTTEN RESIDENT
The house was gone, but the thing that had been inside it was not done with them. Elias felt it before he saw it. The air around the empty lot changed, growing heavy and still. The shadows on the ground stretched in directions that did not match the position of the sun. He grabbed Lyra’s arm. “Keep moving.” They had made it halfway across the lot when the figure appeared again. It rose from the cracked pavement like smoke, its body forming from the places where the light could not reach. Tall. Thin. Its edges blurred and sharpened in turns, as if it could not decide what shape to take. Its face was still blank. Lyra stumbled backward. “Elias…” “I see it.” The figure tilted its head. Its voice came from everywhere at once. “You touched the thread. Do you know what that means?” Elias stepped in front of Lyra. “No.” “It means you are more than a witness.” The figure drifted closer. “It means you can be used.” The word sent a chill down Elias’s spine. “Used by who?” The
