THE STRANGER RETURNS
Elias stared. Mara stood in the doorway, her face pale but unharmed. Alive. The Stranger stood beside her, one hand resting lightly on Mara’s shoulder. Her silver eyes gleamed in the dim light, calm and unreadable, as if she had been expecting this moment. “Mara.” Elias’s voice cracked. He crossed the distance in three strides and pulled his sister into his arms. She was real. Warm. Alive. He held her tightly, afraid that if he let go, she would disappear. “Are you okay?” he asked. “What happened?” “I’m fine.” Mara’s voice was muffled against his chest. “I’m okay. The Stranger found me.” Elias pulled back, his hands gripping her shoulders. “Found you where? What were you doing in the Hollow District?” Mara hesitated. “I don’t remember.” Elias’s expression tightened. “What do you mean you don’t remember?” “She means the Null Order took her.” The Stranger’s voice cut through the tension. Elias looked up. “They used a mimic to lure her out of the house,” she contin
THE PANIC
The streets blurred past. Elias ran with the Echo Connection burning in his chest, a thin silver thread pulling him east toward the Hollow District. The others followed close behind. Lyra stayed at his side, Adrian ran several steps behind her, and Seraphine brought up the rear with her silver blade drawn, her pale eyes constantly scanning the shadows. The city was quiet. Too quiet. Streetlights flickered as they passed, casting long shadows across the pavement. Some of those shadows moved in directions they shouldn’t have. Elias barely noticed. He only cared about the thread. It was frayed. Fading. But it was still there. Still alive. Hold on, Mara. I’m coming. They turned a corner. The Hollow District loomed ahead, its sagging buildings black against the night sky. Even from the edge of the district, Elias could feel the difference. The threads were wrong. They had always been wrong here, twisted and unstable, but tonight they were worse. They snarled around buildin
THE AFTERMATH
The ride back to the safehouse was silent. Elias sat in the back seat, his phone clutched in his hand. He had called Mara six times. Six times, no answer. His mother twice. His father once. Nothing. “She’s probably just at the library,” Lyra said quietly. “You know how she loses track of time.” Elias did not answer. He was watching the threads through the window, the way they bent and twisted around the car as they moved through the city. The danger sense was still humming. Not a warning. Just a low, constant presence. The feeling that something had already gone wrong. Adrian drove. Seraphine sat in the passenger seat, her silver blade sheathed, her pale eyes fixed on the road. No one spoke. The city slid past. Ordinary streets. Ordinary houses. Ordinary people living ordinary lives. They did not know about the mimics. The forgotten. The second moon. They did not know how thin the world really was. Elias envied them. ⸻ The safehouse was cold when they arrived. Seraphine lock
THE MIMIC’S VOICE
The silence after the fight was heavy. Elias stood still, his breath slowly evening out. The mall smelled of dust and smoke. The last traces of the mimics were already fading, their threads unraveling into nothing. The food court was a wreck of broken tables and scorched tiles. Lyra touched his arm. “Are you okay?” He nodded, but the movement was stiff. “Just tired.” Adrian flexed his hand. The ring on his finger still glowed faintly, a dull silver pulse. “That was more of them than I expected.” “Mimics hunt in packs,” Seraphine said. She was already scanning the exits, her silver blade dimming to a faint shimmer. “There will be more. We should leave before they regroup.” Elias did not move. Something was wrong. The danger sense stirred. A whisper at the base of his skull. Not the sharp scream of an immediate threat, but something quieter. Something patient. He turned in a slow circle, scanning the food court. The threads were calm now. Too calm. The mall was silent. Too si
THE TRAP
The group followed the crying. It led them through the abandoned mall, past empty storefronts and rusted escalators, into a food court that smelled of old grease and rot. The sound was small and pitiful, a child’s voice trembling in the dark. Elias stopped at the edge of the room. The threads were wrong. He could see them clearly now. Where the sound should have originated, there was no child. No human warmth. Just a twisted knot of threads, pulsing like an infected wound. The crying was coming from that knot. “It’s not a child,” he said quietly. Lyra’s hand tightened around his arm. “What is it?” “I don’t know. But its threads are wrong. Hollow.” He focused. The knot shifted, revealing a deeper pattern. “It’s wearing something. A mask.” Adrian moved beside him. “It’s a lure.” Seraphine nodded. “A mimic. It’s using the crying to draw us in.” As if in response, the crying grew louder. The small figure huddled in the corner of the food court, its shoulders shaking. It looked
THE SECOND MISSION
The call came just before dawn. Seraphine stood in the kitchen, her phone pressed to her ear, her pale eyes fixed on the window. The pocket watch lay on the table beside her. She did not speak for a long moment. Then she said, “Understood,” and hung up. Elias was already awake. He had been awake for hours, watching the threads shift and settle in the darkness. The danger sense had not stirred, but something else had. A quiet alertness. A sense of waiting. “There’s been another breach,” Seraphine said. Adrian sat up from the couch. “Where?” “Downtown. Near the financial district.” She grabbed her coat. “The Veil detected it thirty minutes ago. It’s already sealed itself.” “Sealed itself?” Lyra emerged from the back room. “Breaches don’t seal themselves.” “This one did.” Seraphine’s voice was clipped. “Which means something came through and then closed the door behind it.” Elias stood slowly. “You think it’s still here.” “I think it’s hunting.” ⸻ The financial district was e
