Dante stood watching Clara’s retreating back, as the courtroom doors swinging shut behind her furiously. A strange, hollow feeling filed his heart, it was not pity for her, but a cold, distant pity for his younger self. How did I spend six years with that woman? What did I even see? If I had known the depth of that foolishness, that selfishness, I would have run a mile away from her.

Someone tapped his shoulder lightly, which pulled him from his trance. “Hey” Caleb said with a frown on his face as he followed his gaze. “You are zoning out hard. What is going on in that big brain? Already planning the victory party?”

Dante shook his head, with a wry smile on his lips and said in a low voice. “Just wondering what the hell I was thinking all those years ago. What made me fall for that. It is like I was wearing blinders. Now they are off and the view is….brutally clear.”

Caleb laughed loudly and roped his arm around his shoulders. Then he said with excitement in his voice, “ Welcome to th

The sound of the gavel was still echoing in the hall when Clara’s world shattered. A raw, piercing scream tore from her throat. “NO! You can not do this! SHE IS MY DAUGHTER!”Then she lunged forward as if to charge towards the judge’s bench, but Mason caught her around the waist, and held her back as she thrashed around, and shouted at her angrily. “Clara! Clara, stop! It is over!”“It is NOT OVER! LET ME GO!” she shrieked, her usual perfect composure covered with fury and disbelief.Across the aisle, a quiet, profound relief settled over Dante’s group. Caleb patted Dante’s shoulder approvingly. Dr. Alice let out a shaky breath in relief and dabbed her eyes again. Nurse Amy squeezed her hand.Clara seeing them, finally wrenched herself free from Mason’s grip. Then she stormed over, her heels clicking like gunshots on the polished floor, and Mason followed closely behind, with a huge scowl on his face.“This is not over!”Clara spat out angrily and jabbed her finger toward Dante’s face.

The judge’s voice cut through the tense silence like a whip. “The court will now hear from the witness. Dr Alice Fremont, please step forward.”Alice rose from her seat, with a straight and professional posture as she walked to the witness stand. The bailiff approached with a bible.“Please state your full name for the record.”“Dr. Alice Margaret Fremont.” She replied stiffly. “Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?”“I do.”Caleb stood up with a calm demeanor and said respectfully, “Dr. Fremont, could you please tell the court your relationship to Daisy Vance?”“I was her primary physician and specialist during her hospitalization for neuro - regenerative treatment.” “And during that time, what did you observe regarding the involvement of her parents?”Alice inhaled deeply and glanced at Dante, who nodded almost unnoticeably, and began with a steady voice, “Her father, Dr. Dante Vance, was a constant presence at the hospital. The black sedan pulled up to the courthouse steps, where Clara emerged from it like a queen stepping on a red carpet, with Mason closely behind her. Three lawyers in dark suits descended upon them.“Are we ready?” Clara asked sharply. The eldest lawyer, who was a man named Mr. Throne with silver temples, laughed jovially and said, “Ready, Mr Vance? This will be like taking candy from a baby. A very simple, straightforward case of maternal rights.”Mason slipped his hands into his pockets, and said darkly, “Good to hear. Just to be clear—once this is concluded and my fiancée has her daughter back, I will personally double whatever she is paying you as a bonus. So, make it a clean victory.”The three lawyers exchanged a quick, greedy glances among themselves before bowing in unison. “Of course, Mr Lockwood. You can count on us,” Thorne assured him.At that moment, glass doors of the courthouse slip open. Dr. Alice, Nurse Amy, and two other nurses from the hospital walked out, likely fo

Dante leaned against his desk with his arms crossed, and with a cool, knowing smirk on his lips as he looked at his unexpected guest. Then he said lazily, “Well, well. To what do I owe this visit, Miss Eva? Did not think my address was in your social circle’s little black book.”Caleb, who was still seated, looked between them with curiosity and asked with surprise in his voice. “You two know each other?”Dante shrugged casually with his eyes still pinned on Eva and replied darkly, “Not personally. But she is Clara’s best friend. Do, in my book, that puts her in the same category as Clara and Mason. Guilty by association.”Eva flinched, but did not back down. She glanced around the spacious, tastefully decorated sitting room, with an icy expression on her face, then she said coldly, “You have….cleaned up nice. Clara did not quite explain just how nicely you had landed on your feet.”“Flattery will not get you far here,” Dante replied flatly, with a stony expression on his face. “Do yo

Clara’s office, which is usually the symbol of her control, felt suddenly different with Mason standing before her, delivering his news with a romantic smile on his face.“…..so you see, my love,” Mason finished, with his hands resting gently on her shoulders. “I just could not stand being so far from this huge part of your life. Buying in was the only way to be close to you, to truly share in your triumphs.” He had kept his gaze soft, but inwardly, he prayed a desperate silent prayer. ‘Stay foolish, Clara. Just this once, stay the romantic fool I built you to be.’Clara’s bright adoring smile did not just fade off her face….it vanished. Her face went utterly, chilling blank and she took a single, slow step backwards and removed his hands from her body. “I….I do not understand,” she said, in a very small voice Mason’s heart dropped to his stomach, but his mask did not slip. He stepped forward and closed the distance between them with wounded concern etched on his face. Then he said w
