Chapter 5

Mason was taken aback by the tone he used. It was like something came over him, something indescribable, something unidentified.

Before he could stop himself, he had already walked towards the men, his eyes trained on the lady who was skillfully dodging the blows delivered to her. But despite how good she was, she couldn't move fast. Her movements were sluggish and that's when Mason realised that she had a gunshot wound at the lower side of her chest.

Her face was gradually turning pale from the blood loss and she was staggering as she struggled to block the fatal attacks from the masked men.

"You better mind your business and get lost unless you want to die with her." One man said after recovering from their previous shock.

Something about his words irked Mason to the core.

"You bully a woman and dare call yourself a man!" He mocked, eyeing the men with contempt.

Marching to them, he flung his fists, successfully delivering a powerful blow to one goon who immediately spat blood as the force knocked him several metres away before he collided on a wall and fell down with a thud.

Everyone stilled, watching the scene play before them.

"The DEVIL!" One man shrieked, terror evident in his voice and expression.

Mason, who was as surprised with what he just did, blinked repeatedly, trying to get his mind to stop playing games with him.

He had felt a surge of power hit him before he delivered a blow and looking at the aftermath of his single blow, he couldn't believe that it was him who just did that.

How's that possible? He never for once trained or even fought. He had zero experience in combat skills so how could he do that?

'Might as well be out of sheer luck.' he reasoned as his alarmed eyes remained trained on the men standing in front of him with terrified expressions.

"How could that be? The devil is already dead. We saw his car explode." Another man argued, not willing to believe that the person before them was the notorious devil.

How could that be? Although they never saw the devil in person, it was rumoured that he was a man tall and muscular, he was a giant.

The man before them however was nothing compared to what the rumors said. He was young, like he was at an average of 24 years. He was dressed shabbily and appeared malnourished.

What was the possibility of them seeing the devil in person?

Although that seemed like a far fetched idea, they could not ignore that possibility either.

Nobody was known for killing with a single blow in the underworld other than the devil himself.

"Then how do you explain that?" Another man chipped in, pointing at their comrade who was no longer breathing from a single blow.

"We should report this to capo. We can't act recklessly." A man said, his voice full of authority.

Mason guessed that he must be the leader.

"What about the girl, commander? The captain said we should bring her back."

"You can go and capture her if you don't want to see the sun set." The man referred to as commander thundered.

"Retreat!" He ordered and they all disappeared into the hallway.

Mason released the breath he had been holding for long. He didn't know what came over him to make him do something so reckless.

He didn't want to imagine what would happen to him if the men had not mistaken him for the man called the devil and he chickened out.

Only he knows how fast his heart has been beating, praying that he doesn't end up butchered. His life might be miserable, but he liked it nevertheless.

To him, it was better to suffer and be alive than die. He wasn't looking forward to dying soon, not when he hadn't accomplished his dreams of owning a business.

Breathing deeply, he rushed to the lady who was now leaning on a wall for support as she groaned in pain.

He supported her, making her lean on his body.

Actually, he should have just turned a blind eye and minded his business by walking away but he just had to be a busybody and jump straight to the battle field.

" Miss! Miss ! Miss!!" He called out, frantically trying to get her to look at him.

Looking at the wound at her ribs, he couldn't help but flinch.

'That must have hurt.' he said Inwardly, not wanting to imagine how much pain the lady was in.

"Why would you walk on this part of the streets alone?" He questioned, laying her on the ground and trying to apply pressure on the wound to at least stop the bleeding.

"I don't know why I always land myself into trouble every time." He said, tearing the hem of his shirt and wrapping the wound before lifting the lady in his arms.

"Let's get you to the hospital." He muttered, taking hurried steps to the direction of the hospital.

He had managed to successfully stop the bleeding, but that was only temporary. He knew that the lady would be needing professional help from a doctor and probably get the bullet in her removed.

Running across the streets with a wounded woman in his arms, Mason did not care what others would think of him. He had a life to save and he would not care about others opinion if he could save the young lady.

He arrived at the hospital and the nurses arrived with a stretcher and carried the lady away.

The lady was reluctant to part with him as she clutched the fabric of his shirt while murmuring," brother, don't go."

Mason pried open her hands as the nurses rushed her to the emergency theatre.

"Sir, fill in the patient's information and proceed to make the payment so that your sister can be treated." A voice jolted him to reality, mocking him of the irony of his life.

Out of panic, Mason had made his way to the most expensive Private hospital in town. Now that he was asked to pay before the operation, he was lost for words and didn't know what to do.

He obviously couldn't manage to pay up for the operation and that might put the lady's life in danger.

"How much?" He asked, absentminded.

"A thousand dollars for the deposit."
