"Mom!" Samantha whined, her expression full of disbelief.

"How can you spout such nonsense? How can I sleep with this kind of a lousy excuse of a man? If anything, I could have already thrown him out of the house." Samantha added, sounding aggrieved as he eyed Mason with disgust.

The suspicion in Susan's eyes vanished after hearing her daughter's words. Yes, her daughter was a high class woman. There's no way she would lower herself to get involved with such a poor man.

"Well, you can't blame me right? I saw you both come out of the room with this trash still straightening his clothes." Susan defended herself, looking at Mason with loath filled eyes.

She couldn't stand his presence.

"I'm going to the company. I am discussing a business deal for the company with William later so I want to arrive early and arrange everything." Samantha reported.

"Make sure you get William to propose to you sooner. If you enter the Carter family, nobody will be able to look down on you. Besides, William is a nice young lad and rich too, you will not get laughed at for marrying a useless live-in husband." Susan said, looking at Mason.

To her, Samantha deserves only the best and the best is nothing near to the trash her grandfather married her to.

"We are still bound by marriage and the three years grandpa advocated is not over. Won't this get us into trouble with the other family members?" Samantha asked.

They were members of the Huttons family but her father was a bastard child of the Huttons so life wasn't as smooth as others might have assumed.

Her grandfather treated them equally but things were different ever since he passed away. The main family have been doing their best to suppress them. Going against her grandfather's wish might give the main family reasons to kick them out of the family, worse would be for her losing the inheritance left behind.

"If William asks for a divorce with his influence, do you think that they will have the guts to go against you? Will anybody dare go against the Carter family?" Susan scoffed with contempt.

"Okay Mom, I understand." Samantha said before kissing her mother's cheeks and leaving.

Mason who was now standing at the end of the hallway listened to their conversation.

He couldn't help but scoff at himself. They were planning to get rid of him and marry their daughter to a rich man. But what was he expecting? It has always been that. To Huttons, he was no human being because he was poor.

He had been reduced to nothing but a house slave, doing all odd jobs in the house.

Without any allowances and a decent Job, he was penniless all year long. He couldn't even afford a new cloth for himself. He would be given what Samantha's brother discarded.

For three years, he had wasted his life, toiling for the same people who couldn't wait to kick him out of their family.

Walking up to him, Samantha glared at Mason.

"Have you been eavesdropping on us?" Her voice was full of accusation. Mason chose to say nothing and remain silent, afterall his opinion didn't matter here as nobody.

"Let me tell you, I am not scared of you hearing anything. I am going to divorce you and marry the man of my status. I can't wait to discard you because you are nothing but bad luck and an eyesore." Samantha spat before walking past Mason and down the stairs.

In the parking lot, Mason ignited the car engine and they soon hit the road.

He chose to say nothing that could anger Samantha.

When they arrived at the company, Samantha left but not without taking the car keys and stuffing a two dollar note at Mason.

"Hitch a taxi back home." She said with a smirk before walking off to the building.

It was office reporting time and employees were clocking in. Those who passed him would turn to take a second glance at the human being who was so out of place wandering around.

Mason paid no attention to them as he walked down to the gate, hands stuffed in his pant pockets.

Samantha gave him two dollars which was barely enough to pay for a taxi. Wasn't she indirectly telling him to walk back home again?

Was she addicted to torturing him?

Mason was so angry so with the two dollars given by Samantha, he bought one steamed bun and started eating it as he walked down the Streets.

He couldn't help but smile bitterly at how pathetic his life was.

In the past, he would sleep tired but that would make him pay his bills and get to pay his college fee.

Now, he sleeps with aching muscles and joints coupled with an empty stomach. All this for what? Just to uphold the promise he made to an old man.

He had met Mr Huttons one fateful hot day while he took a rest under a tree in a park.

The ordinary dressed man approached him and struck a conversation with him.

After chatting for a while, the old man requested a favor from him and he accepted. That's how he found himself married to Samantha and the beginning of his misery.

Few days after their marriage, the old Man passed away, with instructions that after three years, they could decide to dissolve the marriage if it didn't work out for them.

Obviously, nothing was working out between Samantha and him. They were like strangers living under the same roof.

Now that three years would be coming to an end in a month, Mason figured out that it would be time he frees himself from this bondage he had put upon himself.

Mason was lazily walking down the streets when a cry caught his attention.

He wanted to ignore it and mind his business but something pulled him to head towards the source of the voice.

In the dimly lit hallway, he saw a woman tackling and fighting against a group of masked men.

"Hey, leave her alone!" He thundered in a deep and cold voice, surprising the masked men and even himself.

He knew that this was a moment that required him to be at his most intimidating, to assert his authority. He took a deep breath, inhaling the faint scent of cigar smoke that hung in the air, and slowly exhaled, letting the tension settle in his chest. With every exhale, his fingers clenched. His eyes, sharp and penetrating, narrowed as he fixed his gaze on the people before him. He asked nonchalantly like he wasn't planning murder."What next?" Drake asked in turn. "Don't try to act like she isn't your whore, I know all about your little love story."Mason's anger rose at the mention of the word whore but he remained composed."I'm glad you have every detail of my life like the back of your hands but here's something you don't know, you have the wrong girl. Shouldn't you be.." he looked him dead in the eye, "at least six feets below the ground?"Mason raised an eyebrow, "aren't you happy to see me, hm?"Drake rolled his eyes, fear building up inside him, "I want you out of here."Mason stood up, his hands hurried into his pockets as he looked at the books on the bookshelf

Finally, a click on the other end, and a faint, weak voice echoed through the line."Hello?""Sam!" Sandra practically exclaimed, her words rushing out like a tidal wave. "Are you alright?"Samantha sat still on her bed, still trying to recover from the fact that Mason could still be alive, her phone pressed to her ear as she heard the urgency and softness of Sandra's voice on the other end of the line. Her brows were furrowed in confusion, and her fingers idly twirled a strand of hair as she tried to respond. "I.." her voice quivered."Have you seen the news? You won't believe what's happening in the media!"Weakling Samantha as

As the soft morning light filtered through the curtains, Samantha lay in her bed, her gaze fixed blankly on the ceiling above. The room was hushed, the sounds of early morning barely reaching her ears. Her eyes, usually vibrant, now held a distant emptiness, as if her thoughts were lost in the expanse above her.Her tousled hair spilled over the pillow, a curtain of strands framing her face. The creases on her brow hinted at a mind preoccupied by something beyond the room's confines. The gentle rise and fall of her chest marked the rhythm of her breath, a rhythm that seemed to be the only indication of life in her stillness. She stared at the ceiling above with no meaning. Her mind was adrift, carried away by currents of thoughts that were invisible to anyone else. The events of last were still fresh in her mind.A sense of vulnerability lingered around her, the vulnerability of a mind grappling with its own complexities. It was a moment suspended in time, a moment of introspection.
