0007: Cold Anger Of The Shadow

Lloyd walked down the pathway.

Jane felt her heart skip, but her toxic pride rushed to cover her fear. She planted her high heels firmly on the floor and crossed her arms over her white jumpsuit.

"What are you looking at, Lloyd?" Jane snapped, her voice cracking slightly before she forced it into a loud, haughty sneer.

"Look at your pathetic, diseased mother! She sneaked into a fifty-thousand-dollar VIP venue to beg for money from my friends! I just helped her clean off her street filth so she remembers her place!"

Lloyd stopped two feet from Mary.

The sheer anger coming from his body was evident, yet his movements stayed terrifyingly still. Slowly, Lloyd unbuttoned his cheap dark charcoal jacket. He took it off his shoulders and stepped closer to his mother.

His fingers, usually so steady, trembled a tiny, heartbreaking bit as he gently put the warm, heavy wool jacket over Mary's frail, wet shoulders, pulling it together over her chest to hide the dark stain.

"Lloyd..." Mary whispered.

Her voice was soft, clear, and without fear. Her organs were fully healed, her cheeks healthy, but her soul stayed quiet and deep. She reached up with a steady hand and gently placed her small fingers against her son's furious arm.

She felt the iron muscle under his sleeve. She knew her son. She knew the terrifying power sleeping behind his eyes, a power that could crush the Charlton family into dust with a single nod.

"Don't, my son," Mary murmured, looking into Lloyd's eyes with motherly warmth. "The dress is just cloth. The tea is just water. Do not dirty your hands for a small mind."

Her gentle touch acted like an anchor dropping into a raging ocean. The fury inside Lloyd's chest did not vanish but subsided.

"Are you burned, Mum?" Lloyd asked, his voice low and smooth, completely ignoring the woman shouting behind him.

"No, Lloyd," Mary smiled gently, patting his arm. "The silk was thick. I am unhurt."

"Thank heavens," Lloyd said softly. He wrapped his arm securely around his mother's waist, guiding her gently away from the fountain toward the arched exit.

Seeing Lloyd turn his back without saying one insult, Madam Helen came strutting down the corridor. She had been watching from the doorway, and seeing Lloyd retreat only made her delusion bigger that he was scared of their rising power.

"Running away so quickly, car-washer?" Madam Helen cackled, her high voice echoing off the glass dome as she stepped into the middle of the path, blocking their exit alongside Jane.

"Look at you! Carrying your stained, useless mother out the side door like a pair of beaten dogs!"

Jane giggled loudly, her confidence fully back as she stood beside her mother, eyes flashing with cruel, arrogant triumph.

"You think you can cause trouble in our city forever, Lloyd?" Jane taunted, pointing her long nail at his chest.

"Let me tell you something! Tomorrow morning at 9 sharp, the elite Grand Inspector of the Nirvana Group is coming to our headquarters for our final contract audit! Our 20 million dollar expansion is being backed by the greatest shadow company on earth!"

Madam Helen tossed her head back, her gold earrings dangling. "Once that agreement is signed tomorrow, Charlton Logistics Group will enter the billionaire class! We will be untouchable! The city council, the port authority, the police, everyone will bow to us! You and your filthy family won't even be allowed to walk on the same streets as us!"

"We will have you driven out of this province forever!" Jane added, her lips curling into a vicious, superior sneer. "So take your tea-stained mother back to your gutter while you still can!"

The two socialites behind them chuckled softly, crossing their arms as they watched with cold, amused eyes.

Lloyd stopped three paces from Madam Helen and Jane.

He did not raise his voice. He did not clench his fists. Slowly, he turned his head, his eyes locking onto Jane's face, and her laughter died instantly in her throat.

A strange chill crept up her spine, like she was looking into the eyes of an ancient predator standing over its prey.

A faint, slow, mysterious smile hovered at the corner of Lloyd's lips.

"The Grand Inspector of Nirvana Group," Lloyd repeated softly.

"Yes!" Jane reiterated, forcing her chin up despite the cold sweat on her neck. "The highest authority in the regional commerce ministry! A titan you couldn't even dream of meeting in a lifetime!"

Lloyd's eyes narrowed slightly. "Then I suggest you go home tonight and sleep early, Jane," Lloyd said, his voice dropping into a quiet, chilling whisper that made Madam Helen's breath catch.

Jane blinked, confused and irritated. "What?..."

Before she could finish, Lloyd turned his shoulder, keeping his body between Jane and his mother, and guided Mary through the arched glass entrance without another word, disappearing down the private VIP corridor.

"Delusional loser!" Madam Helen spat onto the floor behind them, adjusting her emerald necklace with a huff.

"Talking in riddles to hide his embarrassment! He knows our company is about to become an untouchable giant!"

"He's just trying to save face in front of his peasant mother," Jane sneered, though she reached up with a trembling hand to touch her sapphire necklace, a strange, persistent knot of anxiety tightening in her stomach.

"Come on, Mother. We have to meet Father at the estate. We need to select our finest designer suits for tomorrow's audit."

Outside the grand entrance of the Grand Stamford Suites, a heavily armored black car sat idling softly by the private curb. The dark privacy glass hid the inside from the busy street.

Lloyd gently opened the rear door, holding his hand over the doorframe to protect Mary's head as she stepped into the plush leather cabin.

"Take Madam Mary back to the lakefront estate," Lloyd told the uniformed driver, his tone smooth and soft. "Make sure the personal medical team checks her skin once more, just to be certain."

"Right away, Lord Sovereign," the driver bowed respectfully, pulling the heavy door shut with a solid click.

Lloyd did not get into the car. He stood on the granite pavement, watching the black car glide silently into afternoon traffic.

The moment the car vanished around the corner, the soft, warm expression on Lloyd's face disappeared completely. His posture became rigid, and his eyes turned cold again.

He pulled a dark, custom satellite phone from his inner vest pocket and tapped a single encrypted key.

The call connected on the first ring without a sound.

"Lord Sovereign," Catherine Flower's crisp, sharp voice echoed through the encrypted earpiece. "I am standing by."

"Let's make the Charltons worry a little bit. Send the elite forensic audit team to the Charlton Logistics headquarters," Lloyd commanded. His voice was flat. "Tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock sharp."

"Understood, my Lord," Catherine replied instantly, the sound of rapid typing in the background. "How deep shall we dig?"

"Just a tease for now. I’d have my popcorn ready while I enjoy this unfolding drama." Lloyd said slowly.

"It will be done, Lord Sovereign," Catherine said with an excited aura. "The senior forensic team will be led by Chief Auditor Chillman. I trust him to rattle them a little bit."

Inside the Charlton family estate, upbeat classical music echoed through the dining hall, where a massive wooden table was loaded with roasted lamb, king crab legs, and 5,000-dollar bottles of aged French wine.

Mr. Charlton sat at the head of the table, his face bright red with alcohol as he waved his gold ring in the air.

"To the Charlton dynasty!" Mr. Charlton bellowed, raising his heavy crystal glass high. "Tomorrow at 9 AM, Nirvana Group signs the master regional partnership! Our 45 million dollar trade contract will be locked for the next 10 years!"

Jane sat beside her father, dressed in a stunning red designer gown, her long legs crossed as she held her champagne glass by the stem.

She took a slow sip, a triumphant, arrogant smile on her lips.

"I saw Lloyd today, Father," Jane laughed softly, her dark eyes flashing with malicious delight.

"He was at the Grand Stamford Suites with his sickly mother. I threw a pot of boiling black tea right onto her dress and chased them out of the botanical garden like stray dogs!"

Mr. Charlton burst into a loud, booming laugh, slapping his knee. "Good! Excellent! That is how elite royalty treats street beggars! They should know their place!"

The entire dining room erupted in deep, heartless laughter.

Mr. Charlton wiped a tear of laughter from his swollen red eyes. "Our profits are up 200%! Our expansion is fully funded by Valmont Genesis Bank!”

"To the Nirvana Group!" Jane shouted, raising her glass high, her eyes shining with greed. "To our invincible future!"

"To our invincible future!" they echoed together, their loud, arrogant clinking of crystal glasses echoing into the rainy night.

In their blind pride, they drank and celebrated until the early hours of the morning, not knowing that in less than 6 hours, a little discomfort was on its way.
