"Mariana, tell me you see them too," Aditya whispered, his fingers still resting on the vibrating guitar strings. "Tell me I didn't just accidentally summon a pigeon army."
"I see them," Mariana replied, her eyes wide as she pulled out a sleek digital tablet from her school bag. "This is incredible. They aren't even looking for food. They're completely synchronized."
"They’re staring right into my soul," Aditya groaned, squinting at the nearest gray bird. "It’s creepy. Seriously. It’s like they’re waiting for me to drop a sick beat or something."
"They are," Mariana said, her stylus tapping rapidly against the tablet screen. "The first chord you played was a perfect, resonant G-major. It carried a frequency of absolute peace. You essentially harmonized their nervous systems with the environment."
"I did what now?" Aditya shook his head, his messy hair flopping over his forehead. "I just pinched some metal wires, Mariana. I didn't mean to perform a spiritual upgrade on the local wildlife."
"Try another one," she commanded, not looking up from her screen. "Change the finger placement. Try a minor chord. Let's see how they react to tension."
"I told you, I don't know chords!" Aditya complained, his shoulder muscles tensing as he looked down at the fretboard. "My hand is just doing whatever it wants. It’s like my fingers have their own tiny brains."
"Then let them do it," Mariana said, nudging his leg with her foot. "Stop thinking, Aditya. You're trying to rationalize it again. Just slide your hand up the neck and press down. Let the mark guide you."
Aditya looked down at his right palm. The golden, ivy-wrapped staff was still pulsing, casting a faint, warm glow against the dark wood of the guitar neck. He let out a shaky breath, letting his left hand slide a few frets higher. His fingers clamped down on the cold strings in a sharp, awkward pattern.
He plucked the strings.
Twang.
The sound was harsh, cold, and dripping with an unsettling, hollow resonance.
Immediately, the pigeons exploded into motion.
"Whoa!" Aditya yelled, ducking his head as a dozen gray wings flapped frantically in his face.
"Don't stop!" Mariana called out over the sudden noise, her fingers flying across her tablet. "Look at their behavior! They're terrified!"
"They're trying to use my head as a runway!" Aditya screamed, swatting at the air as the birds scattered in every direction, screeching in pure panic. "What did I do? What was that?"
"F-sharp minor," Mariana muttered, her eyes shining with scientific glee. "Or at least, our version of it. You injected raw, unadulterated anxiety right into their tiny brains."
"I gave the pigeons a panic attack?" Aditya asked, his voice cracking as the last bird vanished over the tree line. "That is so messed up, Mariana! I'm a terrible person!"
"You're not a terrible person, you're a beginner," Mariana corrected, finally looking up from her tablet. "And frankly, that was a highly successful test. You just manipulated the emotional state of another living species with a single, unpracticed chord."
"Well, I don't want to do it again," Aditya said. He went to lift the guitar to hand it back to her, but his arm suddenly buckled. "Wait... what the..."
"Aditya?" Mariana’s tone shifted, her brow furrowing. "Are you okay? Your face just went completely white."
"I don't... I don't feel so good," Aditya mumbled. He tried to grip the guitar neck, but his hand was shaking so violently that the instrument slipped from his lap, clattering loudly onto the grass. "Why is the park spinning? Did someone turn off the gravity?"
"Oh, damn it," Mariana muttered, dropping her tablet onto the bench and catching him by the shoulders before he could slide off the stone seat. "You're burning up. Your skin is boiling."
"I feel like I just ran a triple marathon while carrying a semi-truck," Aditya groaned, his eyelids fluttering as a deep, crushing exhaustion washed over him. "My chest... it feels like a hollow shell. Like someone sucked all the marrow out of my bones."
"It’s the stamina drain," Mariana said, rubbing his shoulders with her warm hands. "I should have warned you. Manipulating external emotions isn't free, Aditya. You're using your own vital energy to fuel the divine frequency."
"You think?" Aditya wheezed, his head lolling back against the stone backrest. "A little warning would have been nice, VP! I thought I was just playing a cool guitar solo, not draining my actual life force!"
"If you don't control the flow, the lyre will just drink from you until there's nothing left," Mariana explained, her voice remarkably calm despite his panic. "You threw the entire weight of your soul into those two chords. Of course you're exhausted."
"I'm not exhausted, I'm dying," Aditya whispered, staring blankly at the sky. "Please tell my mom I loved her, and that Julian stole her favorite tupperware."
"You're not dying, you idiot," Mariana rolled her eyes, though she kept a firm grip on his shoulder. "But you do need to learn how to pace yourself. Sit up. Come on, sit up straight."
"Can't," Aditya muttered. "My spine has turned into wet spaghetti."
"Sit up, Aditya, or I’ll dump my cold water bottle down your shirt," she threatened.
Aditya groaned, forcing his sluggish muscles to cooperate until he was sitting relatively upright. "You are a monster. A heartless, dictatorial art monster."
"I'm the only thing standing between you and a coma," Mariana countered. "Now, look at me. Close your eyes."
"If I close my eyes, I’m going to sleep for a thousand years," Aditya complained.
"Just do it," Mariana snapped. "And listen to my voice. I want you to breathe. Inhale for four seconds. Go."
Aditya took a deep, shaky breath. "One... two..."
"Don't count out loud, you dummy, just do it in your head," Mariana sighed. "Inhale. Feel the air filling your lungs. Now, hold it. Keep that energy centered in your chest. Don't let it slip down to your hands."
Aditya held his breath, feeling the warm, buzzing vibration in his chest slowly settle, condensing from a chaotic storm into a quiet, warm ember.
"Now, exhale slowly," Mariana instructed, her voice dropping into a soft, rhythmic cadence. "Let it out over eight seconds. Smooth and steady. Imagine you're releasing the pressure through a tiny valve."
Aditya let out a long, slow whistle of air. As he did, the heavy, crushing weight on his limbs began to lift, replaced by a cool, soothing sensation that washed over his tired muscles.
"How does that feel?" Mariana asked quietly.
Aditya opened his eyes, blinking as the park stopped spinning. "Actually... wow. The buzzing in my ears is almost gone. And my arms don't feel like lead anymore."
"It’s called pacing," Mariana said, picking up her tablet from the bench. "The divine energy is like a rushing river. If you just open the floodgates, it’ll sweep you away and drown you. You have to build a dam. You control the flow, not the other way around."
"A dam. Right. Got it," Aditya said, stretching his arms over his head. "So, great lesson. Wonderful tips. I’ve learned my lesson, I know how to breathe, and now I’m going home to sleep for the next three days."
"I wouldn't make any long-term sleeping plans if I were you," Mariana said, a small, mischievous smirk spreading across her lips.
Aditya froze, a cold shiver running down his spine. "Why? Why are you smiling like that? That is your evil smile, Mariana. I don't like it."
"We have a schedule to keep, leader," Mariana said, tapping the screen of her tablet. "And our time is extremely limited."
"Limited for what?" Aditya asked, his voice rising in panic. "I already told you, I'm not joining your weekly cult meetings! I just want my credit and my sanity!"
"The school's annual Open House is next week, Aditya," Mariana said, turning the tablet screen toward him.
Aditya squinted at the screen. It was an official school flyer, decorated with colorful banners and drawings of musical notes. In the center of the flyer, in bold, glittering letters, were the words: SPECIAL PERFORMANCE BY THE ART AND MUSIC CLUB.
"No," Aditya said flatly, standing up from the bench, though his knees still felt a bit wobbly. "No way. Absolutely not."
"Yes way," Mariana smiled. "It's a mandatory school event. Every single active club has to perform or present a project to the parents, the faculty, and the school board. If we don't, the principal will pull our funding and dissolve the club."
"Then let him dissolve it!" Aditya yelled, waving his arms. "I don't care about the club! I'll go join the Gardening Club! I'll pull weeds! I love weeds! Weeds don't make pigeons have panic attacks!"
"If the club is dissolved, the school board will clear out room 304," Mariana pointed out, her voice dropping into a serious, warning tone. "They'll find our archives. They'll find the things we've spent decades hiding. And more importantly, Aditya, you're the vessel now. If you don't have a safe place to practice and channel this energy under our supervision, what do you think is going to happen?"
Aditya stared at her, his jaw dropping. "You're... you're blackmailing me with my own magical biohazard status?"
"I prefer to think of it as highly motivated encouragement," Mariana said, standing up and dusting off her skirt. She picked up the acoustic guitar from the grass and zipped it back into its gig bag. "You have exactly seven days to perfect your control, boss. Because next Friday, you're going to perform in front of five hundred people."
"Five hundred?" Aditya gasped, clutching his chest. "I get stage fright when I have to read a slide in a PowerPoint presentation!"
"Then you'd better start practicing your breathing," Mariana said, throwing the gig bag over her shoulder and giving him a sharp, brilliant smile. "See you at club hours this afternoon, leader."
She turned and walked away, her footsteps light and confident as she disappeared down the park pathway.
Aditya stood alone under the willo
w trees, staring at his glowing palm. "I should have just taken the calculus class," he whispered to the empty park.

"Get up! Someone’s in the vents!" Mariana whispered urgently, shoving Aditya toward the dark wooden ladder."I'm going, I'm going!" Aditya hissed back, his wet sneakers squeaking loudly against the stone floor of the underground sanctuary as he scrambled upward. "But for the record, climbing a vertical ladder with soggy socks is a safety hazard!""Stop complaining and move!" Mariana urged, climbing up right behind him. "If that was one of Edward’s spies, they’re going straight to the administration!"Aditya threw open the heavy trapdoor, hauling himself onto the stage of the old auditorium. He groaned, rubbing his throat which still felt dry and scratchy. "Do you hear anything?""There!" Mariana pointed toward the double doors at the back of the auditorium, which were still swinging shut with a soft, echoing thud. "They’re heading up to the old wing! Come on!""Mariana, wait!" Aditya called out, panting as he chased her out into the dim hallway. "My lungs are still burning from earlie
Chapter 9: The Secrets of the Vine
"Come on," Mariana said, her grip tight around his wrist as she dragged him down the empty corridor of the old theater wing. "We can't stand out there in the open. Edward's probably still watching.""Slow down, Mariana!" Aditya complained, his voice still a raspy wheeze. "The nurse's office is literally in the other direction. I need a throat lozenge, not a brisk jog.""A school nurse can't cure divine frostbite, Aditya," Mariana replied, pushing open the heavy double doors of the school’s old auditorium. "We need to get you somewhere safe. Somewhere the Apollonians can't easily sense your frequency.""The school auditorium?" Aditya asked, looking around the dim, cavernous room. The rows of empty velvet seats looked like silent ghosts in the shadows. "What, are we going to hide behind the stage props?""No," Mariana said, marching straight onto the stage and pulling back a heavy, dust-laden curtain. "Under them.""Under them?""Help me lift this," she ordered, pointing to a brass ring
Chapter 8: Enter the Perfectionist
"I wouldn't waste my time," Sebastian said, turning on his heel. "Good luck clearing out your lockers next week. You're going to need it.""That is quite enough, Sebastian."The voice was like a bucket of ice water poured over the conversation. It was cold, sharp, and perfectly measured.Sebastian froze mid-step, his shoulders instantly squaring as he turned back around. "President."From the shadow of the main office corridor, a tall, impeccably groomed student stepped into the light. Edward Vance. His school blazer didn't have a single crease, and the gold emblem of the Classical Music Club pinned to his collar gleamed like a military medal."You shouldn't waste your breath on them," Edward said, his dark eyes scanning Aditya and Mariana with effortless disdain. "Lurking in the hallway to mock the less fortunate is beneath the dignity of our club.""Less fortunate?" Mariana's voice rose, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the strap of her bag. "Watch your mouth, Vance.""Am I
Chapter 7: The Open House Ultimatum
"Are you seriously telling me we're walking straight into the lion's den?" Aditya groaned, matching Mariana's brisk pace as they crossed the school’s central courtyard."It's not a lion's den, Aditya. It's just the administration wing," Mariana said, not slowing down for even a second."Same difference. One has sharp teeth, the other has bureaucratic red tape. Both will eat you alive.""Stop being dramatic. The PA system specifically called both of our names. If we don't show up, Sterling will use it as an excuse to suspend us, or worse, lock us out of the clubroom early.""Maybe that's for the best," Aditya muttered, stuffing his hands deep into his pockets. "I mean, think about it. If the club gets shut down, the lyre problem just... goes away, right? I can go back to being a normal, sleepy student who doesn't have to worry about magical biohazards.""It doesn't go away, you idiot," Mariana hissed, throwing a sharp glare over her shoulder as they reached the polished glass doors of

Chapter 5: The Cult in the Classroom
"I’m not going anywhere with you," Aditya said, taking a step back and clutching the straps of his backpack. "And I'm definitely not ready for a lesson. I'm going to school. To sit in the back of the class, pretend I don't exist, and hope my ears stop ringing."Mariana smirked, shifting her weight as she blocked the metal gate of his apartment complex. "You really think you can just walk into a calculus class like this? Look at your eyes, Aditya. They're practically vibrating.""They are not vibrating," Aditya hissed, looking around the street to make sure his neighbors weren't watching. "It’s just a headache. A very, very weird headache.""And the mark on your hand?" Mariana pointed at his right palm, which he was currently trying to hide in his pocket. "Is that a headache too? Walk with me, Aditya. Unless you want to stand out here and let the morning commuters watch you sweat.""I'm not sweating," Aditya lied, though a bead of cold sweat was indeed trickling down his neck. "Where a
