Daniel kept walking away from the bright hotel lights. The night air felt cold on his face. Behind him he could still hear Liam’s angry voice and Maya calling his name once. He did not turn around.
His old jacket felt heavy. The black card sat quiet in the hidden pocket. The hotel manager had just called it real in front of everyone. People had stared. Phones had recorded. But Liam still looked at him like he was trash.
Daniel’s hands shook a little. Not from fear. From the leftover hurt. Maya’s cold words kept repeating in his head.
“You were convenient. That’s all.”
He walked for a long time with his head down. The streets got quieter. His split lip from the earlier shove still tasted like blood. He wiped it with the back of his hand and kept going.
By the time he reached the edge of campus, his phone (the old cracked one he had almost thrown away) buzzed with leftover battery. Messages were already flying.
Someone had posted a short clip from outside the hotel. Not the part with the manager. Just the part where Liam laughed and called him a beggar. The comments under it were mean.
“Look at the broke kid trying to act tough.”
“Maya really upgraded.”
“That fake card was so funny.”
Daniel locked the screen without answering anyone. He climbed the dorm stairs slowly. His roommates were still awake, phones in their hands.
One of them looked up. “Dude… people are talking. You okay?”
Daniel just nodded and dropped onto his thin mattress. He stared at the ceiling until the room went quiet.
He did not sleep much.
The next morning the whole campus already knew the story — or at least the version Liam wanted them to know.
Daniel walked into the business building with his backpack on one shoulder. Students turned and whispered. Some laughed behind their hands. A girl from his class looked at his faded jeans and shook her head like she felt sorry for him.
Near the lecture hall doors, Liam was already waiting with three of his friends. Maya stood beside him, still wearing the big diamond ring. She looked away the second she saw Daniel.
Liam stepped into his path with a wide, fake smile.
“Well, well. The guy with the magic card. Sleep well after your little show last night?”
Students slowed down to watch. Phones came out again.
Daniel stopped. He kept his voice calm. “Move.”
Liam laughed. “Still acting tough? That hotel manager was probably just being nice to a lost student. Or maybe you stole the card. Either way, nobody here believes you’re anything special.”
One of Liam’s friends snorted. “Yeah. My dad works in finance. Reid Consortium black cards aren’t just handed to random orphans.”
Daniel felt every eye on him. The same cold feeling from last night came back, but stronger. He reached into his pocket and pulled the black card out again. He held it up so the hallway light caught the gold crest.
“I already showed it once,” he said. “You still want to call it fake?”
Liam’s smile got sharper. “Prove it again then. Right here. Call someone. Show us money. Do something that isn’t just waving plastic around.”
The hallway went quiet. Everyone waited.
Before Daniel could speak, a deep voice cut through the crowd.
“Is there a problem?”
An older man in a gray suit walked out of the department office. He was one of the university’s board members — Mr. Harlan. Everyone knew he came from old money and sat on several company boards in the city. Students straightened up when they saw him.
Liam quickly put on a polite face. “No problem, sir. Just talking with a classmate.”
Mr. Harlan’s eyes landed on the black card in Daniel’s hand. He stepped closer, took it carefully, and turned it over once. His eyebrows rose.
He looked at Daniel for a long second, then spoke clearly so the whole hallway could hear.
“This is a real Reid Consortium executive card. I have only seen three of these in my life. The crest is correct. The weight is correct. This is not a fake.”
He handed the card back and gave Daniel a short respectful nod.
“Young man, if you need anything while on campus, my office is open.”
Then he walked away.
The hallway stayed frozen for a few seconds.
Maya’s face had gone pale. Liam’s friends stared. Students started whispering fast, already searching the name on their phones.
Liam’s polite smile cracked. His jaw tightened. For a moment real shock showed in his eyes. Then it turned into something harder — pride mixed with anger and fear of looking small.
He forced a short laugh that did not sound real.
“So the card is real. Big deal. Maybe someone is using him. Or maybe there’s a bigger story. Either way…” He stepped close enough that only Daniel could hear the next words. “I don’t lose. Not to a guy who used to serve coffee. I’m going to dig until I know exactly who you are. And when I find the truth, everyone will see it.”
He turned to the watching students and raised his voice again.
“Don’t believe every shiny card you see. Some people just get lucky for a day.”
Then he put his arm around Maya and walked off with his friends, head high like nothing had happened.
Daniel stood still in the middle of the hallway. People stared at him differently now, but the whispers were mixed. Some looked impressed. Some still looked doubtful. A few already recorded new videos.
He put the card away and walked into the lecture hall without saying another word.
His heart beat steady. The humiliation still sat in his chest, but something colder sat next to it now.
Liam had not backed down.
He had only gotten more determined.
Daniel sat in the back row and pulled out his black phone under the desk. One short message waited from Alexander.
Young Master. Early movement detected on Baxter accounts. Shall we continue the quiet pressure?
Daniel typed back slowly.
Not yet. Let him dig. Let him come after me first.
He locked the screen and looked toward the front of the room as the professor started talking.
Outside the window, Liam stood under a tree with his phone pressed to his ear, already calling someone important. His face was tight with anger and something that looked a lot like fear he refused to show.
The fight that started outside the hotel was no longer just about a girl or a card.
It had become personal.
And both of them knew it was only the beginning.
