Daniel walked down the dark street toward the Sky Golden Hotel. Every step felt heavy. His chest still hurt from what he had watched on the live stream. The girl he had loved for six months said yes to another guy without even stopping to think about him.
He needed to hear it from her own mouth.
After a long walk he finally reached the hotel. The building was huge and bright with gold lights. Expensive cars lined the front. Daniel felt out of place in his old jacket and faded jeans, but he kept going.
Just as he got close to the entrance, he saw them.
Maya and Liam walked out together, laughing. Liam had his arm around her shoulders. Maya looked happier than Daniel had ever seen her look with him.
That smile hurt more than the breakup itself.
Daniel stepped into the light.
Maya stopped laughing at once. Her eyes went wide.
“Daniel? What are you doing here?”
Liam looked him up and down slowly. His eyes moved from the cheap jacket to the worn shoes. A mean smile spread across his face.
“Who’s this?” Liam asked loudly. “Your little charity case?”
A few people near the entrance turned to look. Some already had their phones out.
Daniel kept his eyes on Maya.
“Why did you do it?” he asked. His voice was quiet but steady. “Why did you say yes to him like I never mattered?”
Maya’s face turned red. She glanced at the people watching and lowered her voice.
“Daniel, don’t make a scene. We’re done. I already chose. I want someone who can actually give me a real life.”
Liam pulled her closer and laughed.
“You heard her, broke boy. She picked someone who doesn’t have to count coins just to buy dinner. Now turn around and leave before security throws you out.”
Daniel’s hands tightened, but he forced himself to stay calm.
“I just want the truth,” he said. “Was any of it real at all?”
Maya rolled her eyes and spoke louder so the people nearby could hear.
“You were convenient. That’s all. Now go. You’re embarrassing me in front of everyone.”
A small group of hotel guests had stopped to watch. One girl whispered to her friend and pointed at Daniel’s clothes.
Liam stepped forward, still smiling like he was enjoying the show.
“Look at you. Standing here in those dirty clothes, thinking you still have a chance. Do you even know who I am? My family could buy this whole hotel if we wanted.”
Daniel slowly reached into his jacket and pulled out the black metal card with the small gold crest. He held it up so both of them could see it clearly.
“I don’t need your family,” he said. “This is enough.”
Liam stared at the card for a second, then burst out laughing.
“What is that? A toy? Did you buy that fake card online to look rich?” He turned to the people watching and raised his voice. “Everyone look! The campus beggar brought a fake black card to the Sky Golden Hotel!”
Several people laughed. Maya covered her mouth and laughed too.
“Daniel, stop it,” she said. “You’re only making yourself look worse. Just leave.”
Daniel did not lower the card.
“This card is real.”
Liam stepped even closer. His voice was full of mockery.
“Then prove it. Go ahead. Use it. Buy something expensive right now. Show us how rich you suddenly became overnight.”
Before Daniel could answer, a deep voice spoke from behind them.
“Is there a problem here?”
An older man in a perfect dark suit walked over. He had silver hair and the calm face of someone used to being in charge. Two hotel managers followed behind him, looking nervous.
Liam quickly put on a polite smile.
“No problem, sir. Just handling a lost student who doesn’t belong here.”
The older man looked at Daniel, then his eyes landed on the black card still in Daniel’s hand. His expression changed at once.
He stepped closer.
“Young man… may I see that card?”
Daniel handed it over without a word.
The older man examined it carefully under the bright hotel lights. His face grew serious. He looked up at Daniel with a completely different expression.
“This is a genuine Reid Consortium black card,” he said clearly, loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. “Only the highest members of the Reid family carry these. This is not a fake.”
The area went quiet.
Maya’s smile disappeared. Liam’s face froze.
The older man gave a small respectful nod to Daniel.
“I am the general manager of this hotel. If you need anything at all, Young Master, just say the word.”
He handed the card back and stepped away with the two managers.
For a few seconds no one spoke. Phones were still recording.
Then Liam forced a short laugh, but it sounded weak and angry.
“So what if he has a fancy card? It doesn’t prove anything. Anyone can steal a card. Or maybe someone is using him for a joke.”
His eyes were no longer laughing. They were sharp and full of suspicion.
Maya stared at Daniel like she was seeing a stranger.
Daniel put the card back in his pocket.
“I didn’t come here to prove anything to you,” he said quietly. “I only came for answers. Now I have them.”
He turned and started walking away.
Liam’s voice followed him, low and tight with anger.
“This isn’t over, Reed. I don’t know what game you’re playing, but I will find out the truth. No one makes a fool of me in front of my girl and just walks away.”
Daniel kept walking into the dark without looking back.
Behind him, Liam stood frozen under the bright lights, one arm still around Maya. His pride was hurt. His face felt hot with anger. He refused to believe a broke student could really stand above him.
He would dig. He would check. He would find the real story behind that card.
And when he did, he would make sure Daniel Reed paid for this night.
The real fight had only just started.
And it was going to last much longer than either of them expected.
