Lord Gideon's words hung in the air, shifting the mood of the hall.

The whispers that had just questioned Elara's honor now turned to murmurs of sympathy.

The nobles and merchants, all of them standing with the Peckham, believed Lord Gideon's convenient lie.

Arthur looked at Elara, who was standing with a look of pure and fake innocence, her arms crossed across her chest. "Are you not going to explain why I 'dropped the meal'?" he asked, his voice low.

Elara’s gaze was hard, her beautiful face a mask of cold pride. "You were not attentive in your work, and you have poor tolerance."

A ripple of laughter went through the crowd. Arthur wanted to applaud her brazenness. How could she have the cheek to say that? Her husband, filled with sorrow and rage, saw her with another man, and she dared to say he had "poor tolerance"? Was he supposed to pretend not to see it and serve the food to her lover?
