Kael Veyron spent his life protecting a world that despised him. In an age where magical talent determines a person's worth, he is branded an F-class failure, ridiculed by gifted students and dismissed by powerful warriors. Yet when monsters threaten humanity's survival, Kael fights on the front lines, sacrificing everything to protect those who never believed in him. His reward is betrayal. During humanity's final battle, Kael discovers that Lucien Draven, the celebrated hero he considers a brother, has concealed a terrible secret about the apocalypse. Before Kael can expose the truth, Lucien drives a sword through his heart. Beside his betrayer stands Seraphina Vale, the woman Kael loves, watching him die. But death is not the end. A mysterious voice offers Kael another chance, and he awakens ten years in the past, on the day his magical potential is assessed. Armed with memories of humanity's destruction, he vows to change the future and punish those who betrayed him. Then he discovers the truth about his worthless ability, World Error. It allows him to perceive flaws in magic itself and potentially rewrite the laws governing reality. However, every alteration demands a price, and changing the future awakens something that should have remained forgotten. As disasters arrive earlier than expected, Seraphina begins dreaming about his death, while Lucien displays knowledge he should never possess. Kael must uncover the truth behind his power, the apocalypse, and his own mysterious existence before reality collapses again. This time, he will not let the world decide his ending.

Chapter 1: The Hero Who Killed Me

The sword pierced Kael Veyron's chest just as the final defensive barrier protecting humanity's last city shattered, sending a deafening shock wave across the battlefield.

For several seconds, Kael struggled to understand what had happened. He stared at the golden blade protruding from his chest, feeling its burning magic spread through his veins while the world around him descended into chaos. Beyond the ruined walls, thousands of monsters poured through the breach, their shrieks drowning out the desperate cries of dying soldiers.

Yet none of those horrors frightened him as much as the man standing before him.

Lucien Draven, humanity's celebrated hero and the man Kael had trusted with his life, still held the sword's hilt.

"Why?" Kael whispered.

His voice sounded painfully weak beneath the thunder rolling across the blood-red sky. He had imagined dying countless times throughout the war, but he had never considered that his life would end at the hands of the friend he had fought so hard to protect.

Lucien's expression remained disturbingly calm. His immaculate white armor gleamed beneath the crimson light, untouched by the blood covering the battlefield. He looked less like a soldier who had survived humanity's darkest hour and more like someone attending a ceremony he had waited years to witness.

"You should have remained the failure everyone believed you were," Lucien replied.

Kael's fingers closed around the blade, but his weakening body could no longer summon enough strength to pull it free.

"After everything we fought for?" he asked, struggling to draw another breath. "After everything I sacrificed to protect you?"

"Exactly." Lucien leaned closer, lowering his voice so that only Kael could hear him. "You sacrificed too much. You survived battles you should never have survived, discovered things you should never have discovered, and forced open doors that were never meant to open."

The sword's magic devoured what remained of Kael's strength, making every breath feel like a desperate struggle against an invisible hand squeezing his lungs.

"What doors?" he demanded.

Lucien's gaze shifted toward the enormous rift hanging above the city.

Following his glance, Kael noticed something strange. The monsters pouring through the breach had stopped attacking randomly and were retreating from the center of the battlefield, lowering their heads as though an invisible king had ordered them to kneel. Even the colossal creature looming beyond the city walls had become motionless.

Whatever was approaching had frightened the monsters themselves.

Lucien withdrew his sword, and Kael collapsed to his knees, pressing both hands against his chest as blood slipped between his fingers. Although his vision was beginning to blur, he forced himself to look beyond his betrayer.

Seraphina Vale stood several steps away.

Her silver hair whipped across her face in the violent wind, and tears glistened in her violet eyes. She wore the battle-scarred uniform of the Imperial Order, the organization that had sworn to protect humanity. Against her throat rested a familiar silver pendant, the gift Kael had given her on the night she promised they would survive the war together.

She had once assured him that no matter how dark the world became, she would never abandon him.

Now she stood beside the man who had murdered him.

"Seraphina," Kael rasped.

Her lips parted, but she struggled to produce a response.

"Tell me this isn't what it looks like," he pleaded, desperately searching her face for some sign that he had misunderstood what he was seeing.

She closed her eyes, and that small movement wounded him more deeply than the sword.

"Please," he whispered. "Give me one reason to believe you didn't know what he was going to do."

A tear slipped down her cheek before she finally answered.

"I'm sorry, Kael."

Those two words destroyed the last hope he had been struggling to preserve. He had endured ridicule, starvation, broken bones, and years of being treated as expendable because he believed that protecting the people he loved would eventually mean something.

Instead, the woman he loved could offer him nothing but an apology as he bled to death before her.

Kael lowered his head, allowing a bitter laugh to escape his throat.

"So this is how it ends?"

Neither Lucien nor Seraphina offered him an answer.

He raised his eyes toward Lucien again. "Was any of it real? Our friendship, the battles we survived together, and everything we promised each other?"

For a moment, something resembling regret crossed Lucien's face, but the emotion disappeared before Kael could determine whether it had been genuine.

"Our friendship was real," Lucien answered. "That is what makes this necessary."

Before Kael could demand an explanation, the sky split open.

A deafening crack tore across the heavens as a colossal black symbol appeared inside the rift. It resembled an enormous eye surrounded by countless interlocking rings, each covered in strange markings that Kael could not recognize.

Across the city, every magical structure began to flicker. The surviving defensive barriers collapsed completely, floating weapons fell from the sky, and soldiers who had spent their entire lives mastering magic screamed as their abilities vanished.

Kael watched in disbelief as cracks spread across Lucien's golden armor.

"What is happening?" Lucien shouted, his composure finally breaking.

For the first time, humanity's celebrated hero looked genuinely terrified.

Seraphina staggered backward, clutching her pendant as black veins spread across its silver surface. Before she could say anything, a strange voice descended from the sky.

It did not travel through the air like an ordinary sound. Instead, its words appeared directly inside the minds of every living creature on the battlefield, carrying such overwhelming authority that even the strongest mages collapsed beneath its presence.

THE FINAL CORRECTION HAS BEGUN.

The monsters immediately stopped moving and turned toward Kael one after another. They ignored Lucien, the strongest warrior humanity had ever produced, and Seraphina, whose magic could destroy entire armies.

Every creature was looking at him.

Kael felt something stir beneath his dying heart. The sensation was not pain but a strange recognition, as though some forgotten part of him had finally awakened.

The feeling spread through his body, reaching a place deep inside him that he had never known existed. For a brief moment, the battlefield transformed before his eyes into a vast network of glowing lines, mysterious symbols, and invisible structures.

He could see the magical barrier surrounding the city as a network of interconnected laws, while Lucien's power appeared as a golden structure supported by thousands of smaller commands.

Beneath all those structures, Kael discovered a single flaw running through the very foundation of reality.

Without understanding why, he reached toward it.

The moment his fingers touched the invisible fracture, the world around him fell unnaturally quiet. A translucent message appeared before his eyes.

[WORLD ERROR DETECTED.]

[UNAUTHORIZED EXISTENCE IDENTIFIED.]

[ORIGINAL SUBJECT: KAEL VEYRON.]

Kael stared at the words, struggling to understand what they meant.

Original subject?

Before he could examine the message further, Lucien seized his wrist with enough force to make his fingers ache.

"What did you do?" Lucien demanded.

Kael looked up and noticed that the fear in his betrayer's eyes had changed into something even more disturbing: recognition.

"You know what this is," Kael whispered.

Lucien tightened his grip. "You were never supposed to awaken it."

"Awaken what?"

The ground beneath them split apart before Lucien could answer. A wave of darkness surged from the enormous rift, swallowing the battlefield, the ruined towers, and the remaining soldiers. Seraphina screamed as the darkness reached toward her, but Kael's failing body left him powerless to help.

His heart was barely beating, and the mysterious symbols continued appearing before his eyes.

[SYSTEM AUTHORITY: REJECTED.]

[REALITY INTEGRITY: 3%.]

[RESTORATION PROTOCOL: AVAILABLE.]

A final message appeared, offering Kael a choice that seemed impossible.

[WOULD YOU LIKE TO RETURN TO THE BEGINNING?]

Kael looked at Seraphina, whose desperate eyes met his across the collapsing battlefield. He then turned toward Lucien, the friend who had betrayed him, before looking up at the sky that seemed determined to erase every trace of humanity.

He had questions that might never be answered, enemies who deserved to face justice, and an entire life spent accepting a world that had never given him a fair chance.

If this truly was his final moment, he refused to die without choosing his own.

"Yes," Kael whispered.

The symbols ignited, filling his vision with blinding light.

[RESTORATION ACCEPTED.]

[WARNING: MEMORIES WILL BE PRESERVED.]

[WARNING: THE SUBJECT'S RETURN MAY ATTRACT THE ORIGINAL CREATOR.]

Kael's blood turned cold at the final warning.

The original creator?

Before he could read another message, an enormous shadow appeared behind the black symbol in the sky. Something pressed against the other side of reality, and the entire world trembled beneath its attention.

A voice different from the one that had offered him salvation whispered directly into his mind.

"Found you."

Then everything disappeared.

"Next candidate! Kael Veyron, step forward!"

Kael jerked upright, dragging a desperate breath into his lungs as his hands flew to his chest. He expected to feel the sword buried in his body, the warmth of his blood, and the terrible coldness that had accompanied his approaching death.

Instead, his fingers encountered unbroken skin.

He stood inside a vast examination hall illuminated by floating crystal lamps. Hundreds of students occupied the tiered seats surrounding him, their conversations filling the chamber with nervous excitement. At the far end stood an enormous assessment crystal whose transparent surface glowed with magical energy.

A silver-haired examiner frowned impatiently at him.

"Candidate Veyron, are you planning to stand there all day?"

Kael stared at the examiner before lowering his gaze toward his hands. They were younger than he remembered, and the scars he had accumulated during years of war had disappeared completely. His fingers were slender, his skin was unmarked, and even the black veins left by the sword's magic were gone.

He slowly turned toward the crystal display hanging above the platform.

Beneath the academy's emblem, the date was clearly visible.

Ten years before the apocalypse.

Kael's knees nearly gave way as the truth settled over him. He had returned to the past, not to some uncertain moment in his history, but to the exact day when his future had first been determined by a single assessment.

This was the day the world had branded him a failure.

A boy seated near the front noticed Kael's stunned expression and burst into laughter.

"Look at him! The great Kael Veyron is frightened of a little crystal!"

Several students joined in, filling the examination hall with mocking laughter.

Kael immediately recognized the boy as Darius Crowe, the wealthy student's son who had humiliated him throughout their academy years. In his first life, Darius had eventually died during the third major gate outbreak, screaming for someone to save him.

Remembering that future, Kael almost smiled.

This time, he knew how many people would die before the first year ended. He remembered which families would rise to power, which celebrated heroes would fall, and where the first hidden gates would appear.

With the knowledge he had gained from his previous life, he might be able to prevent thousands of deaths.

However, before he could change the future, he needed power.

"Candidate Veyron," the examiner repeated impatiently. "Place your hand on the crystal."

Kael approached the platform, his thoughts racing as the enormous crystal pulsed with magical energy. An uncomfortable pressure settled over the examination hall, reminding him of the moment that had destroyed his reputation in his first life.

He remembered exactly what would happen when he touched the crystal. It would barely react, producing the humiliating F-class rating that would follow him for years and convince everyone that he was destined to remain weak.

Nevertheless, he placed his palm against its smooth surface.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Laughter erupted from the audience as students began celebrating the result before the examiner had even announced it.

"F-class!" someone shouted. "I knew it!"

"Even the crystal feels sorry for him!" another student added.

The examiner sighed and reached for his recording slate.

"Magical capacity below the recognized combat threshold. Classification: F-class. Candidate Kael Veyron—"

A sharp crack interrupted him.

Every voice in the hall faded as a thin black line appeared beneath Kael's palm, spreading through the transparent crystal like ink through water. The examiner stumbled backward when the crystal's internal lights changed from blue to gold, then from gold to a darkness that seemed to consume the surrounding illumination.

Kael tried to withdraw his hand, but an invisible force held his palm firmly against the crystal.

A message appeared before his eyes.

[WORLD ERROR ACTIVATED.]

[TIMELINE DEVIATION DETECTED.]

Kael's breath caught in his throat as another message materialized beneath the first.

[WARNING: ANOTHER SUBJECT HAS RETAINED MEMORIES FROM THE PREVIOUS TIMELINE.]

His blood turned cold.

Someone else had returned to the past.

Before Kael could process the revelation, a boy standing in the front row slowly turned toward him.

Lucien Draven.

He looked eighteen, handsome and composed, with the same golden eyes that had watched Kael die on the battlefield.

Yet it was not Lucien's familiar face that frightened Kael most. It was the knowing smile spreading across his lips.
