Chapter 1
Chapter 1
Sour wine. The hum of a minibar.
Alexander Sinclair opened his eyes in a hotel suite at the Ashbury Grand, white sheets twisted, a wine glass on its side on the carpet.
His head was heavy. His arms would not lift. There was something bitter at the back of his tongue, sharper than the wine.
He knew that taste.
He knew this room.
He turned his head on the pillow. Beside him, asleep on top of the covers in a borrowed cream dress, lay Sophia.
Victoria's cousin. His wife's cousin.
Light brown hair tied back, a soft tired face, and a small silver hair clip she never took off.
They were both naked.
But he knew nothing had happened.
Two people had been put here.
He was twenty-five again, and this was the morning he lost everything.
Out in the corridor, footsteps. Many of them.
The door swung open.
Victoria stood in the doorway, black hair sleek to the shoulders, red lips, and eyes that measured the price of everything.
She did not look surprised. She pretended to look surprised.
Behind her came the whole Cavendish family.
And behind them, his own parents.
Richard Sinclair, grey at the sides, a builder's hands, a suit that used to fit.
Helen Sinclair, a gentle round face, reading glasses on her head. His mother's hand went to her mouth.
"Alexander!" Victoria's voice rang through the room. "How could you? With my own cousin!"
Sophia woke with a gasp. She saw the crowd at the door and dragged the sheet up to her chin.
"What? Victoria? Grandma?" Her eyes went wide with fear. "Why is everyone here?"
"You're asking us?" Victoria said coldly. "Look where you are, Sophia. Look whose bed you're in. And why are you naked? Both of you!"
"No. No, no." Sophia pulled the blanket tight around her naked body and shook her head hard. "Nothing happened! I don't even know how I got here!"
"Nothing happened?"
Brenda, Sophia's mother, pushed past her husband Danny and grabbed her daughter by the arm. "You're lying in your cousin's husband's bed, both of you naked and you say nothing happened? You've ruined us! In front of the whole family!"
"Thank goodness you brought everyone, darling," Margaret murmured to Victoria. Her own mother, and not one drop of surprise in her either. "Now no one can say you made it up."
Grandmother Beverly's cane struck the floor once. The head of the Cavendish clan, small and straight-backed, silver hair in a tight bun, the cane topped with a silver horse head. The room went still.
"Victoria," she said. "Who told you they were here?"
"Does it matter, Grandma?" Victoria did not look away from the bed. "You can all see it."
"A Cavendish girl," Beverly said slowly, "in a hotel bed. With a married man."
"Grandma, I didn't—"
"I did not ask you to speak."
Sophia's mouth closed. Her eyes filled.
Alexander looked at all of them.
"Look at him." Margaret stepped up beside her daughter. "He can't even face you, darling. Two years you gave him. Two years. And this is how he repays you."
"I'm fine, Mother," Victoria said stiffly.
But her eyes were dry. They had been dry since the door opened.
Alexander knew it.
At the back of the room, his father looked at him and waited for one word.
"Nothing happened between us," Alexander insisted. "We were drugged and dumped here."
A ripple of scoffing ran through the crowd.
"Right. That's what they all say when they get caught with their pants down."
His father's shoulders slumped in defeat.
"Keep feeding us lies nobody believes," Brenda sneered. "You're an absolute disgrace to this family. A married man caught with his own cousin-in-law. You both make me sick!"
Helen Sinclair turned away and pressed her face into her husband's arm.
"Victoria." Sophia's voice cracked. "Please. You know me. I would never do this to you. Never."
"I thought I knew who you were," Victoria said coldly. "And I thought I knew him."
"We did nothing wrong!" Sophia sobbed, sheer confusion overtaking her panic. She had no comprehension of the trap closing around them.
Alexander stared at her trembling form. He knew she was blameless. They had been framed by his own wife, a calculated ruin he remembered all too well, because he had already lived through it once.
He didn't know what twist of fate had thrown him back, to the precise hour his living hell began.
In his first life, after this morning had taken everything from him, someone had found him at the very bottom. A cultivator from another world, far older and wiser than any human. He taught Alexander how to draw spirit energy into the body and grow it, level by level, until death itself let go.
Four hundred years. He had climbed until no man stood above him, until even death stopped coming for him. And at the very last step, he fell. He had climbed too fast, and carried too many regrets.
And still he had come back here. To this bed. To this morning.
He reached inside himself for his spirit energy.
Nothing. Only a thin, cold thread. This body was twenty-five years old, soft, and still heavy with the drug. He was no different from any ordinary man. Any one of them in that doorway could knock him down.
Fine.
This time he would climb slowly. Every level perfect. No regrets. His parents would live. Sophia would live. And on this Earth, he was the only one who knew the way.
Last time, he had begged them to believe him. This time he would let them play it out, every line, and watch.
They thought they were looking at a man who had just lost everything. They were looking at a man who already knew how it ended.
Victoria turned and looked at every face in the room, one by one, as if she were counting them.
"You all saw it," she said. "Every one of you. Remember what you saw today."
"Victoria," Beverly said sharply. "That's enough for one morning."
"No, Grandma. It's not." Victoria's voice was calm and clear. "Everyone here knows what our marriage contract says. Whoever cheats gets nothing in the divorce. Nothing."
The words landed one at a time.
"Victoria." Margaret uttered the name quietly, cutting through the heavy air. "It's all under his name. The estate. The cars. The liquid assets."
"Everything, Mother."
"Even the company?" Margaret looked past the crowd. "His parents' legacy?"
"Every single piece," Victoria said with complete composure.
Not one word about two years of marriage. Only the property.
Alexander felt the bile rise in his throat. He had done this to himself. He had loved her so hopelessly that he traded his own bloodline for her smile.
He remembered the desperate pleas, the year spent wearing down his parents' doubts, swearing he would protect their life's work if they just put everything under his name. Now the trap had snapped shut.
Victoria hadn't just seduced him. She had used him as a weapon to gut his family's entire fortune down to the bone.
Last time, it had worked.
This time, he almost smiled. Enjoy it while you can, Victoria. By tonight, you'll find out you got nothing.
At the back of the room, Richard Sinclair understood. All the color left his face. Helen held on to his arm with both hands.
"Victoria," Sophia whispered. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying the contract is the contract." Victoria looked straight at Alexander, and for the first time that morning, she almost smiled.
"Alexander, I divorce you and you leave with nothing."

Supreme Authority Chapter 13
"Father!" Margaret screamed. "It's the wine! I told you!"Brenda grabbed Sophia by the arm and dragged her back from the table.Victoria stood. She did not go to her grandfather. She looked at Alexander, then at Sophia."You did this to him," she said. "You and your show.""It isn't poison." Alexander was already on his knees beside the old man. "Sit him up. Bent like this, he can't breathe at all."Derek grabbed his collar from behind. "Get away from Grandpa!"The general's left hand shot out and caught Alexander's wrist, hard as iron."Let," he rasped. "Him."Derek let go as if the collar had burned him.Alexander bent to the old man's ear."There's a sliver of metal by your spine, sir. Below the right shoulder blade. Forty years you've breathed around it. The warmth reached it today, and it moved."He had brewed that wine for joints and breath. He had not known about the iron. That part was his to fix.The general's eyes went wide. "Can you fix it?""Yes.""Then do it, son.""Do wh

Supreme Authority Chapter 12
Margaret snatched the glass out of the general's fingers. Wine spilled across the white cloth, dark as tea.The general's right hand came up off his knee to stop her. It rose an inch, shook, and sank back down.Alexander saw it. Nobody else did."It's medicine," he said. "The bark is for his joints. The ginseng is for his breath.""Medicine comes from a pharmacy," Derek said. "That's swamp water.""Then you have nothing to worry about."Derek's chair scraped back. "Fine. Somebody drinks it. If your swamp water does more than Grant's wine, I'll kneel to you. Right here, in front of Grandpa. Both knees!" He swung round and pointed down the table. "And Uncle Danny can judge. He loves old junk."Margaret laughed. Brenda laughed louder, before her husband could.Danny went red to the ears. He sat the way he always sat, bent forward over his plate, one hand pressed to the small of his back. You never stop a man who is digging his own grave, Alexander thought. You hand him the shovel."Every

Supreme Authority Chapter 11
While Sophia slept, Alexander sat cross-legged and breathed the cold air in, and with it the spirit energy, a grain at a time. By the time the dryers below began to thump, the thread inside him had grown one more hair.Once, he had moved mountains. Today, a hair. It was a start.Sophia's phone buzzed. She read it, went pale, and held it out."Grandpa wants you there too. Noon. Wear something decent. Don't be late."From Victoria."She's never wanted me beside her," Sophia whispered. "Why now?""Because if your grandfather gets angry today, she wants someone to blame.""Someone?""Two someones. You and me. The cousin and the husband, in one room."Sophia hugged her knees. "So we're her shields.""Shields can push back," he said.Sophia stared at him, then smiled.---The pawn shop beside the PC rental, watches under scratched glass, a crate of junk by the door. Supreme Authority Chapter 10
Carter leaned back in his chair, smiling."For your next wedding ring," he said. "Since the last one ended up in the dirt."The whole table burst out laughing.Chloe laughed until she had to hold Blake's arm. Even Margaret smiled behind her napkin.Sophia's hand went tight in Alexander's.He let go of it gently, bent down, and picked up the coin.It was a quarter. Cheap. Shiny. He turned it over once in his fingers."Thank you, Carter," he said. "I'll keep it.""Keep it?" Carter snorted. "It's the only money you've got.""Then I'd better keep it safe," Alexander said, and slipped it into his shirt pocket. At the far end of the table, Victoria set down her glass."Enough jokes," she said. "Derek has waited long enough. You know the price, Alexander. I told you on the phone.""Remind me.""Two hundred thousand dollars. Tonight." She did not even look at him. She looked at her nails. "Or you get down on your knees in front of my grandmother, and you beg my brother to forgive you. Now.""
