POV: Ethan Cole

Lily tracked "the package" to a biotech research facility called NeuroDyne.

"Your father worked with them twenty years ago," she said, pulling up files on her screen. "They have archived research from his neural interface projects. The foundation technology for the Vengeance Protocol."

"Those archives should be sealed," I said.

"Should be, but they aren't. Someone inside NeuroDyne is selling access."

She showed me the transaction records.

  • The Front Door

POV: Ethan ColeWe drove to NeuroDyne in silence.Sixty miles.Highway stretched empty ahead of us under gray afternoon sky.My phone buzzed every few minutes with updates from Adrian. The transitional access he had let him feed intelligence remotely. It’s not perfect, but functional enough.“Theodore's vehicles arrived 19 minutes ago. Three SUVs. Twelve men visible on perimeter.”Professional deployment. These weren't hired thugs from some street gang. These were the same contractors who'd extracted Daniel from federal custody without firing a shot. Former military, probably. They’re the kind of people who got paid six figures for jobs that didn't officially exist.“System mapping facility layout now. Service entrance east side. Maintenance corridor leads to archive basement.”I'd been to NeuroDyne before when we stopped Thomas's extraction attempt months ago. Knew the basic layout already. But Adrian said the system added detail I'd missed the first time, security blind spots, struc

  • The Escaped Man

POV: Maya SantosThe voicemail played three times because nobody wanted to believe it the first two. Daniel's voice sounded nothing like him, it had totally changed, prison really changes people. And for Daniel, it’s definitely not for good. He sounded desperate, and feral. Almost like a caged animal someone just unlocked."I'm out. And I'm coming for my daughter. Anyone who tries to stop me dies."Emma hit replay again. Ethan stood very still while it played. I'd learned to read that whenever he’s as still this, he’s at his most dangerous state.Emma sat on the couch holding baby Catherine so tight the infant started fussing, squirming to get comfortable.Catherine appeared in the doorway drawn by the alarm. She was still wearing her physical therapy clothes, her doctor came earlier."What happened?""Daniel escaped," I said. Her face went pale. The whole picture was unbearable, three generations of women Daniel had threatened, all in one room, all vulnerable.I started trying to thi

  • The Uncle's Revelation

POV: Ethan ColeVictoria's intelligence team dug into Theodore Ashford's background immediately looking for weaknesses. Financial leverage, blackmail material, anything we could use. What they found instead was a birth certificate.Original name: Theodore Cole.I stared at the document on Victoria's laptop."That's a common last name," I said, even though I already knew. Then she pulled up a second document. Family tree traced through public records.Theodore Cole, born 1965.Brother: James Cole, born 1963.Parents: Robert and Margaret Cole.My grandparents."Theodore is your uncle," Victoria said quietly. "James's younger brother."The room went silent.Maya grabbed my hand."How is that possible?" I asked. "My father never mentioned a brother. Not once.""They had a falling out thirty years ago," Victoria said, pulling up more records. "Property dispute in public records, lawsuit filed and withdrawn, then Theodore changed his name to Ashford in 1995 when we got married."She looked

  • The Hidden Enemy

POV: Ethan ColeTHE ARCHITECT had so many resources that made Senator Cross look like a small-time crook. Jennifer's system traced corruption patterns back forty years.Bribes. Coverups. Murders. All controlled and coordinated through someone nobody had identified."Whoever this is," Jennifer said, spreading files across the conference table, "they've been building a pharmaceutical monopoly for decades. Cross and Morrison were just proxies.""And now their proxies are dead or in prison," Maya said."Which means THE ARCHITECT is vulnerable for the first time in forty years."We had a window.Maybe the only one we'd get.Jennifer's investigation pointed to someone in the legitimate pharmaceutical industry, CEO, board member, maybe a regulatory official with power to control drug approvals and market access. We put a call through to Victoria, and she ordered her intelligence network to start investigating major pharmaceutical CEOs immediately. Marcus analyzed financial patterns looking f

  • The Auction

POV: Maya SantosThe Cross Industries International asset auction was public and of course, competitive. Even though it has a long history of criminal CEOs.Multiple pharmaceutical companies wanted Thomas's assets, the ingredient supply chain he'd built was valuable despite the company failing spectacularly.Cole Industries showed up with a two-hundred-million-dollar budget that the board approved unanimously.Marcus led the bidding strategy while Ethan observed from the back row. I was supposed to be studying for the bar exam but I couldn't focus, so I watched the auction live-stream from Catherine's cottage instead. The bidding got aggressive fast. Major pharmaceutical corporations were fighting for control of Thomas’s manufacturing facilities and supply contracts. Cole Industries won the first lot, an ingredient manufacturing plant in Ohio, for twenty-five million dollars. Then a second plant in Pennsylvania for thirty million. A third in Virginia for twenty million. Seventy-five

  • The New Candidate

POV: Ethan ColeJennifer Reeves qualified for the Vengeance Protocol. Adrian's system confirmed it. Life-threatening betrayal, legitimate cause for revenge, character assessment positive. But I was hesitant."She's a cop," I said. "Even forced to resign, she thinks like law enforcement. Give her enhanced abilities and what if she goes vigilante?"Maya disagreed."Her law enforcement background means she understands consequences. She won't act recklessly.""You sure about that?""You didn't.""I almost did. Multiple times."Adrian cut in. "The system judges character before activating. If she's not suitable, it won't work. Your father built that safeguard deliberately."Fair point. We decided to tell Jennifer the truth.*****We found a secure location to talk. A private office in one of the buildings I just bought, soundproofed, no surveillance.Jennifer arrived wearing jeans and a jacket, off-duty cop posture even though she wasn't a cop anymore. She was looking around, suspicious."
