The red laser dot hovered steadily over Elena’s chest, shifting an inch as the sniper adjusted his stance on the rusted catwalk above.

"Drop the trigger, Elena," the tactical operative called out again from the shadows of the rafters, his voice distorted slightly by a low-frequency comms filter. "Or the next round goes straight through her spine."

Lucas didn't hesitate. In one fluid motion, his hand cleared his inner jacket holster, bringing the heavy service pistol up. Instead of aiming at the man on the catwalk, he swung the barrel sideways and fired a single shot directly into the heavy electrical junction box mounted beside the container stacks.

Sparks.

A violent shower of white-hot electrical discharge exploded across the damp concrete, plunging the central bay of the warehouse into total darkness as the overhead halogen grid blew out.

Shouts echoed from above. A suppressed rifle barked once, the bullet punching harmlessly through a rusted shipping container two feet to Lucas's left, whining off the corrugated metal.

"Move!" Lucas snapped, grabbing Elena's arm and hauling her hard behind the steel barrier of a heavy green freight container before the sniper could cycle another round.

"What are you doing?" Elena hissed, though she scrambled into cover beside him, keeping her grip on the detonator switch. "If that operative triggers the secondary charges, David and this entire section of the pier go up!"

"He's not here to blow up the pier," Lucas said, his breathing even despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins. "If he wanted the evidence destroyed, he would have fired an incendiary round into the accountant five minutes ago. He wants the backup drive, and he wants us both in one place."

Across the dark warehouse, the sound of heavy tactical boots crunched against scattered gravel and broken glass. The operative was moving down from the catwalk, sweeping the aisles with a tactical flashlight whose beam cut harsh white arcs through the drifting mist.

"Lucas!"

David Miller's muffled voice called out from the dark corner where he remained tied to the concrete pillar.

"Shut up, David!" Elena yelled back, sliding her hand along her jacket to unclip a backup flash grenade.

Lucas held up a hand, signaling her to wait. He listened closely to the rhythmic sound of the approaching footsteps. One man on the ground floor. Possibly a second one still up on the metal walkway covering the exits.

The beam of the tactical flashlight swept past the edge of the container ten feet away from them.

Lucas didn't wait for the light to swing back. He stepped out from cover, low and fast, closing the distance before the operative could bring the rifle barrel around.

The man reacted with professional speed, pivoting and attempting to butt the stock of the rifle into Lucas's chest. Lucas ducked under the swing, caught the barrel with his left hand, and forced it upward while driving a brutal palm strike directly into the operative's throat.

The man gasped, stumbling backward against a stack of wooden pallets, but he didn't drop his weapon. He threw a heavy, desperate punch that grazed Lucas's jaw before Lucas hooked his foot behind the man's ankle and brought him down hard onto the concrete.

The rifle clattered away across the floor.

Lucas pinned the operative down with a knee to his chest, grabbing the collar of his tactical vest and ripping off the comms headset. "Who sent you? Vanguard?"

The operative spat a mouthful of blood onto the floor, a grim smile cutting across his bruised face. "You think Vanguard is running this city, Vance? You're five years behind the times. The board didn't just buy your brother... they bought your father's executioner."

Before Lucas could press further, a loud mechanical whine echoed from the outer perimeter of the warehouse.

Headlights suddenly flared through the gaps in the corrugated metal walls. Two armored SUVs smashed straight through the sliding security gates of the pier compound, their heavy bumpers crunching through rusted iron and screeching to a halt outside the main entrance.

Doors flew open. More armed men poured out into the rain, but their tactical gear didn't bear federal insignia—nor did they belong to the Vanguard syndicate. They wore the polished silver lapel pins of Sterling Global's private security division.

And leading them, holding a black utility umbrella against the storm, was Victoria Sterling herself.

She walked past the shattered gate without a trace of hesitation, her boots splashing through the puddles as she stepped directly into the open doorway of the warehouse.

"I told you," Victoria called out into the cavernous space, her voice carrying easily over the sound of the rain. "I don't rely on assumptions, Mr. Vance. And I certainly don't let my new business partners walk into a slaughterhouse alone."

Elena lowered her radio detonator slightly, staring past Lucas at the arriving security force. "Who invited corporate HR?"

"She didn't come to help us negotiate," Lucas said quietly, rising from the pinned operative and kicking the man's fallen sidearm out of reach.

Victoria stopped twenty feet away, her eyes sweeping over the tied accountant, the armed operative on the floor, and Elena standing beside the freight containers. She didn't look surprised by the chaos; if anything, her expression sharpened with grim satisfaction.

"Drop your weapons," Victoria instructed her security detail, who immediately raised their rifles to cover both the catwalk and the aisles. She then looked directly at Lucas. "Your brother's emergency quorum just tried to liquidate the remaining maritime assets from a holding cell at precinct headquarters. They thought you'd be dead by midnight."

"And instead, we found the missing link," Lucas replied, gesturing toward David Miller, who was still struggling against the ropes tied to the pillar.

"Not quite," a cold voice echoed from the upper rafters above the rear exit.

Everyone froze.

From the shadows near the back crane controls, a figure stepped out onto the highest gantry—holding a heavy bolt-cutter in one hand and a secondary digital tablet in the other.

It wasn't a mercenary. It was Richard Vance, senior counsel for Sterling Global, who had supposedly been left behind at the penthouse after Marcus's arrest.

Richard smiled down at them, pressing his thumb against the tablet screen. "Director Sterling, you really should run background checks on your own executive legal team before you decide who to partner with."

A series of loud, automated metallic clicks echoed from beneath the floorboards across the entire pier.

"The structural charges under Pier 42 are wired to a master timer," Richard said, his voice echoing triumphantly through the damp warehouse. "In exactly three minutes, this entire dock goes into the harbor—taking the accountant, the dead sister's secrets, and Vance Holdings' final ledger straight to the bottom of the sea."

Plaster dust rained down from the ceiling as a second, heavier detonation echoed from the front entrance of the manor."Federal tactical breach!" Elena shouted over the rising wail of internal fire alarms, grabbing Lucas's arm as the floor beneath them vibrated. "They aren't waiting for a warrant anymore. Sterling's teams are clearing the wings room by room."Marcus didn't flinch. He didn't even drop his cane, standing firmly in the center of the ravaged study while smoke began to bleed under the doorframe from the hallway."They aren't here for arrests, Elena," Marcus said, his voice cutting through the rising chaos with cold clarity. "Director Sterling knows the federal marshals are three minutes behind him. If we don't secure the archive in the sub-basement right now, the entire family history goes up in flames—along with every name on that board."Lucas stared at his brother, weighing the risk in a fraction of a second. The ledger on the desk remained untouched, the silver key gle

  • The Old Estate

The heavy iron gates of the Vance family’s abandoned country estate hung half-open on rusted hinges, groaning softly in the predawn wind.Lucas cut the sedan’s headlights two hundred yards down the overgrown access road, letting the vehicle coast silently beneath the heavy canopy of towering oak trees. The estate had been sealed by federal asset forfeiture orders five years ago, but the perimeter security sensors had been disabled weeks ago—or bypassed entirely."If this is another trap set by Director Sterling's team, we won't have room to maneuver out here," Elena whispered from the passenger seat, checking the clip of her service pistol before slipping the weapon into her coat pocket."It's not Sterling," Lucas said, stepping out into the damp morning air and pulling his jacket tight against the chill. "Sterling wants public control and legal receivership. Whoever sent that note wants the estate's private vault opened before the federal marshals arrive at sunrise."They moved acros

The encrypted video feed went dead with a sharp click, leaving only the dull hum of the sedan's engine and the rhythm of windshield wipers clearing away the drizzle.Elena stared at the blank dashboard screen, her fingers still clenched tightly around the microchip. "That wasn't Director Sterling. The encryption protocol on that signal... it was routed through three separate offshore nodes in Zurich.""I know," Lucas said, keeping his eyes on the wet asphalt as he navigated the deserted off-ramp leading toward the old district. "It’s the same signature that appeared on the warning notes left at my apartment. Whoever is running the Vanguard board from the shadows doesn't just want the ledgers back—they want us to use them against Director Sterling ourselves.""And if we plug that microchip into a reader?" Elena asked, turning to look at him. "What happens to the dead man's switch?""We find out who signed our mother's death warrant five years ago," Lucas answered quietly. "Or we walk r

  • Federal Custody

The heavy slam of steel-toed boots echoed off the damp concrete walls as four federal agents flanked Director Sterling, their assault rifles locked and leveled toward the gantry."Drop the weapon, Lucas," Director Sterling ordered, his voice flat and devoid of any paternal warmth. "You're standing on federal property, interfering with an ongoing counter-intelligence seizure."Lucas didn't lower his pistol, but he didn't raise it either. He kept his stance balanced, his eyes fixed on the man who had controlled the city's legal shadows for the past decade. "You didn't come here for counter-intelligence, Director. You came to make sure Richard didn't hand the original Zurich ledgers over to Victoria's private sector team.""Richard is an employee of Sterling Global," Director Sterling replied, stepping further into the warehouse while his agents fanned out across the lower level. "And you are a suspended investigator who is currently trespassing in a restricted zone. Put the gun down bef

The numeric display on the tablet in Richard’s hand blinked a harsh crimson: 02:59.Across the catwalk, the red digital numbers began ticking downward in absolute silence. In the main bay below, the hum of the heavy refrigeration units and the patter of rainwater hitting the corrugated roof suddenly felt agonizingly loud."You're out of your jurisdiction, Richard," Victoria called out, her voice hard as she kept her weapon raised toward the gantry. She didn't look panicked, but the tension in her shoulders betrayed her calculations. Sterling Global's private security team shifted their rifles upward, sweeping the upper railings."Jurisdiction?" Richard let out a dry, barking laugh from the shadows of the crane controls. "Director Sterling, the legal department owns every square foot of this waterfront property. We drafted the deeds five years ago, right after your firm helped launder the initial acquisition fees through shell accounts in Zurich. Do you really think I'd spend a decade
