“This is our manager.”
“Great!”
“Are you planning to get yourselves fired?! How could the consumption of barely 15 people amount to 2.7 million dollars? Do you know who I am? I’m a good friend of your boss!”
The manager wasn’t in a hurry. He said calmly, “Sir, I’m so sorry. The meal was 1.8 million dollars only. However, you ordered a bottle of the most expensive wine, the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti just now. A bottle costs 980 thousand dollars. So, you’ve got to pay 2.7 million dollars. It’s approximately 2.8 million dollars, however since you’re a friend to the boss, we rounded down the figure…”
“Believe it or not, you’ll lose your jobs this instant!” Damien roared as he wagged his finger at both the waiter and the manager.
“How do you have a wine that costs nearly a million dollars? Even if you do, I didn’t request for something this expensive. I’ll call the police!”
He took out his phone and made an action like he was about to call the police.
The manager calmed himself and whipped Damien’s hand away sharply. He had been in this position for several years.
Thus, he had seen all kind of people with similar characters and more in Colburn.
However, this was the first time he had seen someone who had no money but still pretends to be rich.
Suppose there’s always a first.
He said solemnly after taking a deep breath, “Mister, let me some things clear to you. First, we provided you the best and most expensive wine you requested for. Second, our waiter made to remind you about the price but you didn’t even pay heed to what he wanted to say. Third, these have all been recorded and so we have evidence. If you still want to call the police, please feel free to do so.”
The manager snapped his fingers and several well-built men in undershirts rushed in.
When the waiter went to report to him just now, he felt that someone might want to stir up trouble and so he had brought the bodyguards with him.
Seeing this, Damien broke out in cold sweat and trembled.
But he wasn’t going to show weakness, he wasn’t going to back down just yet after all the efforts he had put into impressing his classmates. He gritted his teeth and decided to use his last card, “Where is your boss?! I demand to see him. I’m sure he has no idea that you all are trying to extort from his customers!”
Damien didn’t believe that the boss of such a well-known restaurant would choose to hang around daily. Surely, he must have other important things to attend to.
“And who’s performing such acts under my nose?”
A young man with lowcut and a good body build, wearing a black shirt with sleeves rolled up to show his tanned arms and a button left lose to bare his chest walked in with a smile and his arms folded across his chest. He wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, looking daunting but dangerously evil at the same time.
His appearance made people unconsciously gasp.
Eastbay Diner was one of his properties.
This was Brandon Walker! He was a very high-profile person!
He did overdo it just now, saying that he was friends with Brandon.
He knew that he was nothing in front of Brandon, just an insignificant being he could crush at the snap of his finger.
How dare he mess with Brandon?!
“Mister, you have a platinum card and also holding an Audi car key. You’re probably not someone who can’t afford the bill. You requested for the most expensive wine to be precise and now, you refuse to pay for it,” the manager said coldly after seeing the boss arrive.
Damien was scared silly!
He was about to soil his pants.
Just what had he gotten himself into?
“No! I don’t dare do that!” Damien said quickly resisting to urge to wet his pants, “We’ll pay, we’ll definitely pay the bill!”
He looked at his classmates nervously pleading for help while talking. He only had over 1.5 million dollars left on his platinum card.
Moreover, this was the entire fortune he had accumulated over the past few years luck smiled on him.
He barely had 2 million dollars himself, how would it be possible for him to pay the bill?
The classmates who were all flattering him just now were now looking in different directions.
Brandon walked slowly over to Damien and tapped his face twice lightly, “Tsk, tsk, tsk, you order for the best stuff in Eastbay Diner alongside one of the best suites, you prove yourself to your friends and had a feast obviously enjoying yourselves and now it’s difficult to pay?”
Damien started sweating profusely at a visibly fast rate, desperation hit him hard and he suddenly turned back and pointed at Manuel.
“He ate a whole lot and just kept eating like he was going on a rampage.”
The other classmates were also cowering and quickly cleared themselves away from Manuel.
Manuel was the only one standing tall with a straight face with Shirley beside him. Apparently, he picked Brandon from the slumps and groomed him after noticing his potential when he was still among the Rodriguez.
Brandon lost his parents at a young age and had been left to fend for himself on the streets. He had been bullied, beaten and escaped death a few times.
He was almost on the verge of a death he wouldn’t have escaped if Manuel didn’t come across him.
Manuel could have left the Diner if he wanted to but he founds Damien’s cowardice pleasingly amusing to his eyes.
He widened his eyes a bit in surprise and pleased to see how Brandon had grown magnificently over the years. However, Manuel didn’t intend on recognizing him.
Besides he himself, has lost influence over the years.
He doubted Brandon would even want to acknowledge him.
Everyone’s attention now fell on Manuel at Damien’s cowardly statement.

The elevator doors slid open onto the executive floor, Manuel stepped out without slowing. Gavin matched his pace, a brown file tucked beneath his arm, neither of them spoke. The corridor was quieter than usual. Most of the senior executives were either in meetings or had already left for lunch. The only sound came from the faint tapping of computer keys somewhere beyond the reception area.A polished brass nameplate caught Gavin's eye, ‘Chairman's Office,’ and beside it sat another, ‘Helen Lawson- Executive Assistant to the Chairman’. The office door stood half open, Helen looked up from her desk the moment their footsteps reached her. Her face immediately brightened, “Mr. Rodriguez,” she rose immediately. “It's good to see you.” Manuel simply offered a polite nod, “Good afternoon, Helen.” Her attention shifted to Gavin, “And Mr. Shaw.” A warm smile spread across her face, “I was beginning to think you'd forgotten where this office was.”Gavin chuckled, “I've been keeping busy.”“So

The boardroom doors stood open and Manuel slowed his pace as he approached. Inside, only one chair was occupied. Chairman Theodore Blackwood sat near the window, a porcelain teacup resting on its saucer. Afternoon light settled over his silver hair, softening the deep lines around his eyes. He looked less like the chairman of a multibillion-naira corporation and more like someone's grandfather enjoying a quiet afternoon. He looked up as Manuel entered, “There you are.” His voice carried the same warmth it always had. “I was beginning to think you'd forgotten an old man.” Manuel managed a faint smile, “I've been occupied.”“So I've heard,” Theodore gestured to the chair opposite him. “Sit.” Manuel sat down and neither of them spoke immediately, Theodore poured another cup of tea and slid it across the polished table, “You look like you haven't been sleeping properly.” Manuel wrapped a hand around the warm cup, “I've had a few things on my mind especially concerning the company.”The ch

The archive room which smelled of old paper, dust drifted through narrow beams of afternoon light that slipped between the blinds. Metal shelves stretched from one end of the room to the other, each lined with neatly labeled storage boxes that had not been touched in years. Gavin ran a finger along one of the labels before pulling the box free, ‘Board Meetings... Four Years Ago.’ He carried it to the long table in the center of the room and lifted the lid. There were folders, minutes, attendance sheets and voting records. Everything had been preserved with almost obsessive care. He slipped on a pair of cotton gloves before opening the first folder. On opening it, there was nothing, the second, still nothing. A quiet sigh escaped Gavin because he knew hours of work awaited him.---Upstairs, Manuel sat motionless, the recording remained paused. Alistair stood frozen beside the projector, the corner of a single sheet peeking from the blue proposal folder. Manuel zoomed in again, but sti

The office had emptied by the time Manuel reopened the laptop. The steady hum of the air conditioner was the only sound in the room. Outside, evening painted long shadows across the courtyard. Most employees had gone home hours ago. A few lights still burned on the lower floors, but the executive wing had fallen silent. Gavin was at his desk arranging Manuel’s schedule for the next day as Manuel had quite a number of meetings the following day.Manuel rested his hand on the mouse, the archived recording waited on the screen, ‘Board Meeting – Project 608’ and he clicked on it. The loading circle spun once before dissolving into the familiar boardroom, the video was dated four years earlier. The camera overlooked the entire conference room from one corner of the ceiling and the younger version of himself sat at the head of the table. His suit was darker, his expression harder.Around him, the board members settled into their seats, exchanging quiet greetings before folders began opening

Brandon walked into Manuel’s office just after Alistair left. The photograph Alistair had left behind still lay beside the folder, Manuel picked it up for a moment before sliding it back into the folder and then he looked at Brandon, “Was just about to call you.”“Does the program still work because it has been dormant for a while?” A small smile tugged at Brandon’s lips, “Trust me.” He pulled the laptop closer and the screen lit with a pale blue glow. A password and then another, then a black window replaced the desktop and lines of text appeared one after the other. Gavin walked around the desk, “I’ve never understood any of this.”“You don’t have to,” Brandon replied as his fingers moved quickly across the keyboard. The cursor blinked, he inputted another command, followed by one more command and then, the screen refreshed. Rows of timestamps filled the monitor as Manuel folded his arms across his chest, “When was the last attempt?”Brandon didn’t answer immediately, his eyes move

“No worries sir, I’d just send for him.” Gavin said and went out, returning a few minutes later. The knock came exactly five minutes later and the door opened with Alistair stepping inside. He stopped when he saw the office, Manuel sitting behind his desk and Gavin by the window. When he was sent for, he had spent a lot of time masking his emotions properly before coming to face Manuel even though he had no idea why he was being sent for. His eyes swept over them once before returning to Manuel. “You wanted to see me.”“Sit,” Manuel said.Alistair remained standing for a second, then he pulled out the chair and sat. The office fell quiet and Manuel just slid a photograph across the desk. Alistair’s hand froze, not for long but just a second and then he looked up, “Where did you get that?”“My question first. Who’s she to you?” Manuel asked calmly.Silence filled the office as the photograph remained between them. A woman smiled up at the ceiling, one hand hooked through Alistair’s arm
