Rivenox groaned, the sound echoing hollowly inside the absurdly pristine confines of a room that looked like a cross between a high-end aristocratic parlor and a deeply confused marital wellness retreat. The walls were draped in plush, ruby-red velvet that actively absorbed sound, creating an oppressive, muffled silence broken only by the synchronized ticking of a grandfather clock shaped like a grinning Cupid.

"My armor," Rivenox muttered, staring down at his polished, midnight-blue silk sleeves with a look of pure, unadulterated existential horror. "My legendary, soul-forged dread-plate. Fashioned from the bones of fallen crusaders and hardened in the fires of the nether-pits. Replaced by Italian silk and a pocket square."

Beside him, Kaelira was tugging frantically at the glowing, bright pink cord that bound their right wrists together. The magic tether a literal manifestation of the Void’s bizarre, twisted sense of humor pulled taut with an elastic snap every time she tried to put more than six inches of distance between them.

"Stop pulling," Rivenox said, pinching the bridge of his nose as a dull, throbbing headache settled behind his eyes. "You're only going to stretch it until it snaps back and hits one of us in the face. Or worse, triggers another system update."

"I am not stopping," Kaelira hissed through gritted teeth, her holy armor having suffered a similarly humiliating transformation into a sleek, ivory-white bridal gown complete with a modest lace veil she had already managed to rip off and toss into a corner. "Do you have any idea what this feels like? I am a Paladin of the Sunlit Vow. I take oaths against unholy enchantments, not, not whatever this is! We are tied together like two delinquent calves at a livestock auction!"

"And whose fault is that?" Rivenox shot back, turning to glare at her. "If you hadn't insisted on charging Silas head-on while screaming prophecies of doom, the Void’s artifact wouldn't have activated its 'Matrimonial Synchronization' protocol!"

Before Kaelira could formulate a suitably lethal response involving her newly modified, silk-wrapped brass pipe, a cheerful, automated chime rang out from somewhere within the mahogany wainscoting. The sound was entirely out of place in a subterranean fortress dedicated to dark magic and economic extortion it sounded like the opening bell of a sleepy village bakery at dawn.

Ding-dong.

A section of the velvet-lined wall hissed open with pneumatic precision, revealing a sliding brass delivery hatch. A plume of warm, sweet-smelling steam billowed out into the frigid air of the parlor, carrying with it the unmistakable, rich aroma of melted butter, vanilla extract, and toasted maple syrup.

Both of them froze, their bickering abruptly cut short by the visceral betrayal of their own stomachs. Neither Rivenox nor Kaelira had eaten anything since the night before the siege began, having subsisted entirely on adrenaline, tactical planning, and pure, concentrated spite.

A moment later, a heavy, mechanical tray slid smoothly out of the hatch on polished steel rails.

Rivenox slowly leaned forward, his silk cuffs whispering against each other. Kaelira mirrored his movement, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated disbelief as the full scope of the dungeon’s automated culinary sadism revealed itself.

There was no table service. There were no individual plates.

Resting on the silver platter was a single, monstrously large golden-brown pancake. It easily spanned three feet across, its surface glistening with a small lake of shimmering butter and dusted with an obscene amount of powdered sugar. A single, stylized strawberry shaped like a heart sat dead center in a swirl of whipped cream.

And flanking the edges of the tray, locked firmly into mechanical metal housings, were exactly two forks.

Just two forks. With impossibly long handles that crossed over one another like a pair of crossed swords in a heraldic crest.

"No," Kaelira whispered, her voice dropping an octave as she stared at the terrifyingly carbohydrate-heavy monstrosity. "No, absolutely not. I would rather starve in the dark. I would rather gnaw on my own gauntlets."

"Do not look at me," Rivenox said, holding his hands up defensively, though the gesture was somewhat undermined by the bright pink cord dangling from his wrist. "I did not program the kitchen automata to serve romantic breakfast motifs. The core intelligence must be feeding on our residual ambient stress. It thinks this is a 'healing bonding exercise.'"

"A healing bonding exercise?" Kaelira’s voice rose to a shrill pitch. "By the gods, Rivenox, the fork handles are welded together! If I move left, you are forced to move right! If I want a bite of the edge with the powdered sugar, you have to coordinate your elbow trajectory so you don't stab me in the neck!"

As if to punctuate her point, the tray gave a sharp, mechanical click, and a harsh, automated voice echoed from a concealed speaker in the ceiling.

“Attention, resident couple. Nutritional intake is mandatory for optimal combat synergy. Please utilize the provided shared dining apparatus. Failure to complete sixty percent of the meal within fifteen minutes will result in a forfeiture of baseline dungeon heating.”

"They're turning off the heat," Rivenox said flatly.

"They're turning off the heat," Kaelira repeated, her expression darkening into a mask of cold, tactical fury. She looked down at her fork, then across at Rivenox. "If you poke me in the eye with your tine, Overlord, I will find a way to sever this cord with my bare teeth and shove the rest of this pancake down your throat."

"The feeling is entirely mutual, Sister," Rivenox replied coldly. "Let us get this over with before the system decides to pipe romantic wind music into the room."

They stepped closer to the table, their enforced proximity pressing their shoulders together. The silk of Rivenox's jacket brushed against the delicate lace of Kaelira's modified gown, an agonizing reminder of the magic holding them hostage.

"On three," Rivenox muttered, gripping the end of his elongated fork handle. "One. Two. Three."

They lunged forward in unison.

It was an immediate, unmitigated disaster. Because their arms were tethered at the wrist with barely two feet of slack, any movement forward required them to lean at an awkward, synchronized angle, like two drunk sailors trying to navigate a tilting deck. Rivenox’s fork lunged toward the top left quadrant of the giant pancake, while Kaelira’s fork drifted toward the center.

The handles crossed with a sharp clack.

"You're leaning too far to the right!" Kaelira hissed, her face only inches from his. He could smell lavender soap and a faint trace of iron from her weapons polish.

"I am compensating for your abysmal posture!" Rivenox snapped back, his own face flushing with an embarrassing tint of red that had nothing to do with dark magic. "If you would just keep your elbow tucked in like this we wouldn't be tangling our utensils!"

"Don't tell me how to hold a dining implement, you absolute despot! I was trained in the high aristocratic courts of the Sunlit Reach before I took my vows!"

"Clearly, their culinary combat curriculum was severely lacking!"

With a frustrated grunt, Kaelira jerked her arm upward, attempting to leverage her fork free. The sudden movement caught Rivenox off guard, dragging his arm along with hers. The combined momentum caused both of their forks to plow violently through the center of the pancake, sending a small tidal wave of maple syrup splashing across the silver tray and directly onto Rivenox’s pristine white cravat.

Rivenox stopped moving entirely. He looked down at the sticky, amber-colored stain spreading across his chest, then slowly looked up at Kaelira. His expression was a masterpiece of deadpan fury.

"My cravat," he said softly, his voice trembling with a terrifying, suppressed rage. "That was imported silk from the weaver-goblins of the lower abyssal tier. Do you know how long it takes to requisition proper neckwear when the supply lines are jammed by rogue paladins?"

"Oh, stop whining," Kaelira retorted, though she looked slightly guilty as she wiped a stray dollop of whipped cream off her own lace sleeve with a napkin. "It's just sugar. You can wash it off once we escape this lunatic asylum."

"It's not just sugar, Kaelira! It's a symbol of my dignity!"

Ding-ding.

The automated speaker chimed again, breaking their staredown.

“Warning. Synchronized motion inefficiency detected. Penalty protocol initiated: Enhanced Intimacy Mode.”

Before either of them could process the warning, the floor beneath their feet gave a sudden, violent lurch. The mechanical table slid forward, pushing them both back until their lower backs pressed hard against the edge of the velvet-upholstered console behind them. The pink cord around their wrists glowed with a blinding, neon intensity, shortening by another six inches before they could even draw breath.

Suddenly, there was no space left between them. Rivenox’s chest was pressed directly against Kaelira’s, the fabric of his silk jacket melding seamlessly with the ivory lace of her gown. They were forced to stand face-to-face, so close that their noses nearly touched, breathing the same warm, maple-scented air.

Kaelira let out a sharp gasp, her hands flying up to press against his chest to push him away, but her wrists were pinned between them by the shortened cord. "What what did it just do?" she breathed, her eyes wide with panic.

"It shortened the tether," Rivenox said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper as he tried desperately to keep his gaze locked anywhere except on her lips. "Because we failed the coordination metric. It thinks we need closer physical proximity to 'improve our communication skills.'"

"This dungeon is sentient," Kaelira whispered, her voice trembling slightly, whether from rage or the sheer absurdity of the situation. "It's actively, maliciously sentient, and it needs to be put down with extreme prejudice."

"Agreed," Rivenox muttered. But neither of them moved away. In fact, trapped as they were by the physics of the curse and the cramped confines of the table, pulling back was mathematically impossible.

Slowly, awkwardly, looking into each other's eyes with a mixture of mutual hatred and profound exhaustion, they both looked down at the giant pancake sitting patiently on the tray between them.

The forks were still crossed. The syrup was still dripping.

Kaelira let out a long, shuddering sigh that puffed warm air against Rivenox’s collarbone. "If you drop us into another trap room after this," she muttered, "I am going to let Silas hit you with his sword."

"If we survive this breakfast," Rivenox replied, his voice dry as bone, "I am personally rewriting the dungeon's HR manual to outlaw all romantic wellness protocols."

With agonizing, slow-motion precision, they both reached down, gripped the crossed fork handles together as a single, unified unit, and managed to stab a respectable chunk of pancake. Together, moving in clumsy, forced lockstep, they brought the food up and took respective bites while maintaining unbroken, furious eye contact.

It was the most humiliating meal of their lives. And, somewhere in the dark machinery of the deep levels, the dungeon's core hummed with quiet, algorithmic satisfaction.

Sector 3 was not merely a section of the dungeon; it was a sprawling, subterranean labyrinth of architectural arrogance and logistical nightmare, designed by a committee of sadistic goblins who possessed an overactive appreciation for sliding metal walls and sudden, unwarranted drops into boiling brine. Normally, Rivenox navigated these corridors with the graceful, menacing glide of an Overlord who knew every hidden pressure plate and false-floored hallway by heart. Today, however, his stride was severely compromised by the four feet of indestructible, neon-pink magical cord tethering him to the most relentlessly righteous paladin this side of the continent."If you lean an inch to the left again," Rivenox hissed through clenched teeth, his crimson eyes narrowing as his expensive Italian leather shoe clipped a jagged outcropping of native basalt, "I am going to throw myself off the nearest suspension bridge and take you with me."Kaelira’s jaw tightened, her pristine silver gauntlet c

The golden cord tethering their wrists suddenly tightened, jerking Rivenox and Kaelira toward the center of the chamber. Kaelira gasped, her voice reaching a pitch of pure hysteria.Rivenox looked down and nearly choked. His dark, jagged plate armor the intimidating gear of a Dread Overlord had vanished. In its place was a sleek, midnight-blue silk tuxedo with silver lapels and a crisp white cravat. We can't break through that with a pipe and some shadow-bolts."Kaelira finally looked at him, her eyes narrowing. "Then how do we break it?"Riven
