The weapon hummed inches from Ethan's forehead. He could feel the heat coming off it, like standing too close to a fire.

"Wait," a voice said. It was Ren. He grabbed Vance's arm and shoved it upward just as the weapon fired. A bolt of black energy screamed past Ethan's ear and blasted a hole clean through a car window behind him.

"What are you doing?" Vance shouted, ripping his arm free. "Move, Ren! He's mine to kill!"

"Not yet," Ren said. His voice stayed calm, almost bored. "He's mine to test."

"Test?" Vance snarled. "This isn't a game." "Everything is a game now," Ren said, glancing at Ethan with that same knowing smile. "Or did you forget already?"

Vance's jaw tightened. For a moment Ethan thought the man would shoot anyway, rules or no rules. Then Vance lowered his arm, glaring hard enough to burn a hole through Ethan's chest.

"Fine," Vance said. "But this isn't over. Nobody hits my men and walks away clean." "Duly noted," Ren said.

Vance turned and stormed off, barking orders at his shaken group. They scrambled to follow him, dragging their wounded along. In seconds the road that had been full of armed men was empty except for broken glass and Ethan's own ragged breathing. Ren didn't leave right away.

"You're stronger than you look," Ren said, studying Ethan like he was reading a book. "For someone in a body this young." "Who are you?" Ethan asked again. "How do you know about me?"

"That's a long story," Ren said. "One I don't have time to tell you today." "Try me." Ren's smile didn't waver. "Ask me again when you've earned the answer, Ethan."

He turned and walked into the chaos of the street, weaving between panicked people until the crowd swallowed him whole. Ethan started after him, but a sharp pain in his ribs stopped him cold. His body wasn't ready for a chase. Not yet.

"Damn it," Ethan muttered, pressing a hand to his side.

He forced himself to focus. Ren was a problem for later. Right now he needed the skill book before someone else found it. He pushed forward, moving fast through streets he barely recognized without the ruin and rot that had covered them for the last ten years.

The bookstore came into view minutes later, its windows still intact, its old wooden sign swinging gently in the wind like nothing in the world had changed yet. Ethan pushed the door open. The bell above it jingled, an absurd, cheerful sound against the screaming outside.

"Please still be here," he whispered, moving straight for the back shelf. He remembered exactly where it was. Third row, bottom shelf, hidden behind a stack of old cookbooks nobody ever touched. He dropped to his knees and pulled the books aside. The space behind them was empty. "No," Ethan said. "No, no, no."

He searched the shelf above it, then the one below, tearing through books in growing panic. Nothing. The skill book that should have changed the shape of his early days was simply gone.

Then he saw the folded piece of paper sitting exactly where the book should have been. He picked it up with shaking hands and unfolded it.

"You'll need this more where you're going." No name. No signature. Just eight words written in neat, careful handwriting. "Someone got here first," Ethan said slowly. "Someone who knew exactly where to look."

His mind raced through the possibilities. Ren. It had to be Ren. But how could Ren have known about this specific book, hidden in this specific store, unless he too carried memories that didn't belong to this timeline.

"Two of us," Ethan whispered. "There's actually two of us." A soft chime rang inside his head, cutting through his racing thoughts.

[Loyalty Rebate: Condition Detected.]

Ethan straightened up fast. "What?"

He held perfectly still, waiting for more, but nothing else came. Just those four words, glowing faintly at the edge of his vision before fading away.

"Condition detected," he repeated. "Detected from what?"

He thought back through the last hour. The family he saved. The father grabbing his daughter and running. He hadn't given them anything. He hadn't traded any items or supplies. He had only saved their lives and asked for nothing in return.

"Is that it?" Ethan asked out loud, half expecting the empty bookstore to answer him. "Is that what triggers it?"

He pulled up his status window with a thought, scanning for anything new, any hint of what the rebate skill actually did. Most of it stayed locked, greyed out, waiting for conditions he didn't understand yet.

Only one line stood out, small and easy to miss if he hadn't been looking for it.

[Loyalty Rebate: Locked Skill. Unlock requirements: Unknown. Progress: 1%.]

"One percent," Ethan said, staring at the number like it might change if he looked hard enough. "One percent from saving one family." If that was true, if real loyalty and real protection actually built toward something powerful, then everything he thought he knew about surviving this world was wrong. In his first life he trusted people because he loved them, and it got him killed. Maybe this time trust wasn't just a risk.

Maybe it was a weapon nobody else even knew existed.Outside, another scream tore through the street, closer this time, followed by a low growl that didn't belong to any human throat. Ethan folded the strange note and shoved it into his pocket. The skill book was gone. Ren had already moved ahead of him in ways Ethan didn't understand. And somewhere out there, a second person who remembered the old world was watching him, testing him, waiting to see exactly what kind of man Ethan would become this time.

"Fine," Ethan said, standing up and heading for the door. "Let's see who levels up faster."

He stepped back out into the chaos, and the door swung shut behind him with one final, cheerful jingle.

The countdown ticked lower. Four minutes, thirty seconds.Ethan studied the stone door carefully, running his fingers along the carved symbols. Ancient text spiraled around a circular groove at the center, two handprints pressed into the stone below it."There," Ethan said, pointing. "Handprints. The shape moved through the smoke, slow and massive, its outline flickering strangely between shadow and solid form."It's not coming this way," Sera whispered after a long, tense moment. "It's heading north. Away from us."Ethan let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding. "Small mercy.""Don't celebrate yet," Sera said, finally releasing his wrist. We need to get inside before something else decides we look interesting."They pushed through the greenhouse doors and kept moving, cutting through back alleys toward the dungeon entrance Ethan remembered from his old life. The streets around them stayed eerily quiet, too quiet, the kind of quiet that made Ethan's skin prickle with every step."How did you know my name?" Sera asked suddenly, breaking the silence.Ethan kept his eyes forward. "I told you already. Lucky guess.""That's not an answer," Sera said. "I've been thinking about it since the school dungeon. Her voice was so soft he almost didn't hear it."Don't talk," Ethan said. "Save your strength."He looked at her side. The bandage there was soaked through with blood again, dark and wet, spreading fast."It reopened," Toby said, his hands shaking as he knelt down too. "The potion isn't working anymore.
