The shadows in the Academy corridors were never truly empty, but tonight, they felt hungry. Bastian pressed himself into the alcove of a dusty, unused supply room, his breath hitching in his chest. The heavy, iron-bound doors of the forbidden archives loomed ahead, silent and imposing.

"This is madness, even for me," Bastian muttered to himself, his hand hovering over the cold brass of the door handle.

CALIBRATION: 29% COMPLETE, the voice in his mind droned, sounding unusually crisp. SYSTEM ALERT: HARMFUL ENTITY DETECTED. PROXIMITY: THIRTY FEET.

Bastian froze. "A creature? Inside the Academy?"

THREAT LEVEL: HIGH. BIOLOGICAL STATUS: UNKNOWN. ARCHIVAL PARASITE: CONFIRMED.

He took a shaky breath, his fingers ghosting over the locking mechanism. The golden lines flared in his peripheral vision, mapping the lock not as a puzzle, but as a series of weakened, vibrating stress points. With a gentle, precise turn, the heavy bolts retracted with a soft, metallic click. He slipped inside.

The library smelled of dust and ancient, drying rot. Bastian didn't waste time. He moved through the rows with the fluidity he and Camila had practiced, his feet barely making a sound on the marble floor.

"Okay," he whispered, scanning the shelves for his hidden cache. "The third row. Bottom shelf. Come on, come on."

STAY LOW, the voice warned. THE ENTITY IS TRACKING YOUR THERMAL FOOTPRINT.

"Where is it?" Bastian hissed, ignoring the urge to sprint.

A low, liquid sound echoed from the dark rafters above like wet leather sliding over stone. Bastian glanced up, but saw only moving ink-stains against the ceiling.

"What is that thing?" he breathed.

A shadow descended. It wasn't a solid form, but a shimmering, multi-limbed smear of darkness that seemed to swallow the dim light around it. It moved with a twitchy, erratic rhythm that defied physics. Bastian realized with a jolt that it wasn't walking; it was blinking in and out of existence, jumping between points of structural stress.

ERROR: SPATIAL ANOMALY. IT FEEDS ON REALITY-DISSOCIATION.

Bastian stumbled back, his heart hammering. "It feeds on what?"

"It feeds on the cracks, boy," a distorted, rasping voice echoed, seemingly coming from the creature itself.

Bastian’s blood ran cold. "You… you can talk?"

The creature rippled, stretching into a jagged, humanoid silhouette. Its eyes were pools of static, glowing with the same violet light Bastian had manifested in the Chamber of Judgment. "I am the remnant of the first tear. I am the error you ignore."

"I’m not ignoring you," Bastian said, his voice trembling as he backed toward the stacks. "I’m correcting you."

"A correction?" The creature hissed, lunging forward. Its limb moved in a blur of distorted geometry.

Bastian dove, his training with Camila kicking in. He didn't think; he just moved. He felt the golden lines flare, mapping the trajectory of the creature’s strike. It was a chaotic arc, but the error the point where its form failed to manifest correctly was glaringly obvious.

He swiped his wooden rod at the creature’s center of mass. The rod passed through the shadow like smoke, but the impact sent a shockwave through the room.

"Pathetic," the creature laughed, a sound like glass grinding on steel.

"You’re all smoke," Bastian grit his teeth, sidestepping as a limb lashed out. "You have no core."

"I have the core of everything you’ve tried to hide," the creature countered, sweeping its hand toward the shelf.

Bastian realized too late what it was targeting. His stash.

The creature’s shadowy tendril lashed out, hooking around the leather-bound book and the loose papers. With a violent jerk, it shredded the parchment into fine, gray ash.

"No!" Bastian lunged, but the creature swiped again, throwing him across the aisle.

He hit a heavy wooden table, his breath leaving him in a sharp gasp. The room swam.

CALIBRATION: 30% COMPLETE. WARNING: SYSTEM FATIGUE IMMINENT.

"My notes..." Bastian coughed, struggling to push himself up.

The creature loomed over him, its form coalescing into a more defined, terrifying shape. It tilted its head, a motion that was entirely too human.

"You smell like them," the creature whispered, leaning down. Its face, a mask of shifting, violet static, was inches from his. "You smell like the Architect. You smell like the one who tore the pages."

"I don't know what you’re talking about!" Bastian screamed, scrambling backward.

"You will," it replied, its voice deepening, vibrating against Bastian’s teeth. "The scent of your soul is a map. I will find it again, little glitch. And next time, I won't just take your papers."

With a sudden, sharp pop, the creature dissolved into a cloud of freezing, ozone-heavy mist.

Bastian lay on the floor for several minutes, the silence of the library rushing back in. His head pounded, and his lungs felt raw. He looked at the floor where his notes had been. Nothing but dust remained.

"They’re gone," he whispered, his voice cracking. "Everything is gone."

SYSTEM STATUS: STABLE. THREAT DEPARTED.

"Stable? You think I’m stable?" Bastian laughed, a jagged, broken sound. He stood up on shaky legs, his eyes scanning the ruins of his research.

He spotted a single, charred scrap of paper near the creature’s vanishing point. He crawled over, his fingers trembling as he picked it up. It was a corner of his own sketch the geometry he’d drawn of the Academy’s central warding system.

On the back, in a dark, ink-like substance that certainly wasn't his, were a few words: THE FOUNDATION IS A LIE.

Bastian stared at the ink, the weight of the night crashing down on him. He had lost his research, but he had gained something far more dangerous. The creature hadn't just destroyed his notes; it had confirmed that he was on the right path.

"It recognized me," he whispered, the realization settling into his marrow like frost. "It knew my scent. It knew who I was connected to."

He stood up, tucking the charred scrap into his tunic. He had to get out. He had to find Camila. He had to figure out what the hell the 'Architect' was, and why a shadow-creature was hunting for it inside the heart of the Academy.

He turned toward the exit, his movements stiff and painful. As he reached the door, he paused, looking back one last time at the darkened, empty library.

"I don't know what you are," he murmured, his voice steadying, "but if you’re looking for the Architect, you’re going to have to get through me first."

He slipped out into the hallway, the cool night air hitting his face. He didn't know what the dawn would bring, or how he would explain the missing notes to Camila, but as he walked, he didn't feel like a broken student anymore.

He felt like an adversary.

ADAPTATION PHASE: 30% COMPLETE, the voice buzzed. NEW OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE THE COMING SHIFT.

Bastian picked up his pace, his eyes burning with a new, dangerous focus. The game had stopped being about surviving the Academy’s tests. It had become a war against the very reality he was waking up to. And for the first time, he was ready for the fight.

The morning air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a jarring departure from the sterile, ozone-heavy atmosphere of the Academy. Bastian stood at the edge of the Ironwood Forest, the towering, jagged trees looming over the clearing like the teeth of a giant beast. Beside him, the other students murmured nervously, their gear clanking as they double-checked their packs.“Keep it together, Wijaya,” Camila muttered, nudging his shoulder. “Don’t look at the canopy like it’s going to eat you. Just find the marked trail and stay in the shade.”Bastian looked at her, his pulse steadying. “You make it sound like a walk through the gardens. We both know they didn’t drop us here just to hike.”Camila smirked, adjusting the strap of her bag. “Well, no. They want to see how we handle real-world resistance. The forest is literally designed to kill anyone who can’t hold their own. Keep your eyes sharp. Don’t trust the birds, and for the love of the stars, don’t eat the berries.”“I’m n

The moonlight filtered through the high, arched windows of the abandoned ventilation sector, casting long, fractured shadows across the damp stone floor. Bastian waited in the gloom, his breath hitching as a pebble skittered nearby."You’re jumpy," a voice remarked from the darkness.Camila stepped into the pale light, her usual crisp uniform discarded in favor of worn, supple leathers. She looked different more like a scavenger than a top-tier student."Can you blame me?" Bastian asked, wiping sweat from his brow. "If Vane catches us here, he’ll have my head on a pike and your reputation incinerated by morning.""Then we’d better make sure he doesn't catch us," Camila said, setting a heavy lantern on a crate. "Are you going to keep standing there like a statue, or are we going to train?"Bastian let out a shaky laugh, stepping into the dim illumination. "I’m ready. But I have to ask why are you actually doing this? You said you wanted to know if I was the 'real thing,' but this is a

Camila Reyes stood there, her back to the hall, her expression tight. She had been the one to warn him, her presence in his room a breach of every social protocol they had, yet she didn't seem to care."Did you hide it?" she asked, her eyes searching his face."Under the floor," Bastian replied, his voice strained. "But they’re going to tear this place apart. They aren't looking for contraband; they’re looking for evidence of a breakthrough."Camila stepped inside, closing the door firm

The air was frigid, biting at Bastian’s skin, but the heat inside his chest that rhythmic, humming furnace of Aether kept the shivering at bay.He stood at the edge of the pit. Opposite him, Kaelen not the boy from before, but a different brute, a third-year named Thorne stood heavy-footed and sweating before the match even began. Beside the dais, Dean Halloway watched with impassive eyes, his presence a silent command for total order."You ready to get broken, Wijaya?" Kaelen grunted, rolling his shoulders. "I heard you got lucky against Valerius. Don’t think that’s happening twice."Bastian tightened his grip on his practice sword, feeling the wood groan under his pressure. "I don’t know. The iron-bound book tucked against Bastian’s ribs felt like a live coal, radiating a heat that had nothing to do with physics and everything to do with the secrets it held. He reached his room, shoved the book under the loose floorboard beneath his cot, and collapsed. His heart was a frantic drum, but his mind felt terrifyingly sharp. The next morning, the Academy’s central courtyard was abuzz. A massive, shimmering scroll of parchment hung suspended in the air above the sparring pits the Ranking Board."Hey, look at that," a student sneered, elbowing his friend as Bastian approached. "If it isn't the ghost of the bottom tier. Are you lost, Wijaya? The infirmary is that way."Bastian didn't look at them. He focused on the board, his eyes tracing the names. His name, Bastian Wijaya, sat at the very bottom, highlighted in a pathetic, mut
