The moonlight filtered through the high, arched windows of the abandoned ventilation sector, casting long, fractured shadows across the damp stone floor. Bastian waited in the gloom, his breath hitching as a pebble skittered nearby.

"You’re jumpy," a voice remarked from the darkness.

Camila stepped into the pale light, her usual crisp uniform discarded in favor of worn, supple leathers. She looked different more like a scavenger than a top-tier student.

"Can you blame me?" Bastian asked, wiping sweat from his brow. "If Vane catches us here, he’ll have my head on a pike and your reputation incinerated by morning."

"Then we’d better make sure he doesn't catch us," Camila said, setting a heavy lantern on a crate. "Are you going to keep standing there like a statue, or are we going to train?"

Bastian let out a shaky laugh, stepping into the dim illumination. "I’m ready. But I have to ask why are you actually doing this? You said you wanted to know if I was the 'real thing,' but this is a hell of a risk for mere curiosity."

"Maybe I’m bored of the stagnation," she shrugged, rolling her shoulders. "Every student at this Academy is taught the exact same rhythm. The exact same flow. It’s like watching a dance where no one is allowed to improvise. You… you’re the first person here who’s actually breaking the music."

"I’m not trying to break it," Bastian said, his voice quiet. "I’m just trying to read the notes they hid."

"Well, keep your cryptic nonsense for later," she said, drawing her practice rod. "Show me the shift. The one you used on Kaelen."

Bastian moved into position. He felt the familiar pull of the golden geometry, the way the world seemed to click into a grid of potential energy. He shifted his weight, his feet finding a balance that defied the uneven floor.

"Start slow," he whispered, mostly to himself.

Camila lunged. Her form was a masterpiece of classical training efficient, elegant, and devastatingly fast. Bastian didn't parry. Instead, he dropped his lead shoulder, stepping into the space where her elbow would be at the midpoint of her arc.

THWACK.

The wooden rods collided with a sharp crack. Camila stumbled, her momentum carrying her past him. She caught herself on the wall, her eyes snapping back to his.

"That wasn't a standard counter," she breathed, her face flushed with excitement. "You didn't meet my force. You just… slid past it."

"It’s not about meeting the force," Bastian explained, his own adrenaline spiking. "It’s about recognizing the arc of your movement. You commit your weight to your dominant side when you strike. If I step to your blind angle, your own momentum works against you."

"Show me again," she demanded, moving back into the center of the pit. "But this time, try to keep up."

"You’re going to be aggressive, then?" Bastian grinned.

"I’m going to try to hit you, Wijaya. That’s the point, isn't it?"

She came at him in a blur. This time, she didn't rely on a single, clean strike. She feinted left, forcing Bastian to shift, then drove a hard, snapping blow toward his ribs.

Bastian felt the ERROR warning flare in his mind, but this time, he didn't freeze. He didn't wait for the geometry to dictate his entire reality. He incorporated her rhythm. He pivoted, using her own energy to propel him into a defensive spin.

"Your left side is lagging," he noted, his voice strained as they traded blows.

"That’s because I’m guarding the center!" she shouted back, deflecting his rod with a sharp twist of her wrist. "You’re telegraphing your pivots by looking at my knees. Stop that. Look at my eyes."

"If I look at your eyes, I miss the flow!"

"Then find a balance!" she roared, driving him backward. "You’re relying too much on the Sight. If you only look at the 'math,' you’ll never see the person in front of you. A machine can calculate a strike, Bastian, but a fighter has to feel the intent."

Bastian slowed his breathing, syncing it with the movement of her chest. He stopped trying to analyze the vectors and started focusing on the cadence of her stride.

"There," he muttered.

He didn't just step; he flowed. He caught her rod, locked it against his own, and forced her to pivot. She gasped, caught off balance, and he used the opening to sweep her leg gently, but enough to send her tumbling onto the floor.

They were both panting, the silence of the room amplified by their ragged breathing.

Camila lay on the cold stone, staring up at the vaulted ceiling. She started to laugh a genuine, breathless sound.

"You actually did it," she whispered.

Bastian sat down beside her, his body aching. "I didn't think it would work. You’re fast, Camila."

"And you’re a nightmare to track," she replied, turning her head to look at him. "Your form is terrible, but your timing is… it’s unnatural. If we combined your intuition with my foundation, nobody in the third year could touch us."

"So, that’s the deal?" Bastian asked, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. "You teach me how to be a proper combatant, and I teach you how to read the weave?"

"It’s a dangerous trade," she said, her expression sobering. "If Vane or Julian finds out I’m teaching you how to refine your style, they’ll say I’m corrupting the Academy’s standards."

"And if they find out I’m teaching you how to see the geometry," Bastian countered, "they’ll say you’re losing your mind."

Camila looked at him, her gaze lingering on his face in the dim light. "I think I’m already past the point of caring what they think. You’ve changed things, Bastian. The Academy doesn't feel like a cage anymore. It feels like… a playground."

"A very dangerous one," Bastian reminded her.

"The best kind," she said, sitting up. She reached out, extending her hand. "Again. From the top. And this time, try to actually hit me."

Bastian took her hand, pulling himself up. "I’ll try not to bruise you too much."

"Please," she scoffed, already moving into a defensive stance. "I’ve taken worse from the instructors."

As they began again, the clatter of wood on wood filled the room, but the sound was different now. It wasn't the frantic, desperate noise of a boy struggling to survive; it was the rhythmic, measured cadence of two people building something new.

They drilled until their muscles burned and their lungs felt like they were filled with crushed glass. They exchanged techniques her refined defensive pivots for his unconventional, geometry-based counters. The fusion was intoxicating. When they moved together, they were a blur of coordinated intent, shifting through the space as if they were a single organism.

"That was perfect," Bastian gasped, leaning against the wall, his shirt soaked with sweat. "That strike how did you know I was going to turn right?"

"Because you always look right before you decide to move," she said, her chest heaving. "You’re predictable, Bastian. We have a lot of work to do."

"And you have a habit of over-committing to your forward lunges," he countered, wiping his face. "I can see the tension in your hip before you even launch."

"Fair point," she conceded, a rare, genuine smile breaking across her face. "I guess we’re both a mess."

"A mess that’s going to be very hard to beat," Bastian said.

Camila started to laugh again, but suddenly, she froze. Her head snapped toward the entrance of the ventilation tunnel.

"Shh," she hissed.

Bastian held his breath, his senses sharpening. The golden lines flickered in his peripheral vision, reacting to a disruption in the air pressure near the door.

ALERT: EXTERNAL PRESENCE DETECTED. PROXIMITY: TWELVE FEET.

"Footsteps," Bastian whispered, his voice trembling. "Someone’s coming."

Camila grabbed the lantern and smothered it, plunging the room into absolute darkness. They stood in the void, their breathing silent, their hearts hammering in tandem.

Through the narrow grate of the tunnel entrance, they heard the heavy, rhythmic clank of metal a night guard, patrolling the sector with a heavy, iron-tipped spear.

"Stay low," Camila whispered, her voice barely a breath. "If they find us, there’s no excuse. This area is strictly off-limits."

"I know," Bastian replied, his hand finding the grip of his rod.

The guard stopped just outside the entrance. The scraping of iron against stone echoed through the tunnel.

"Any activity in Sector Four?" a second voice called from further down the hall.

"Nothing but dust and echoes," the guard grunted. "This place hasn't been used in a century. Why are we even patrolling this dump?"

"Orders from the top," the second voice replied. "The Board is jumpy. Ever since that kid, Wijaya, started pulling stunts in the pits, they think everything is a conspiracy. Just sweep the area and let’s move on."

Bastian felt his pulse race. The guard took a step toward the tunnel entrance. The light of his torch flickered against the damp stone, casting a long, probing beam that danced across the entrance of their hiding spot.

Camila leaned into Bastian, her shoulder pressing against his arm. She didn't move. Her heart rate was steady, her breathing controlled. She was the anchor, and Bastian was the current.

"Nothing here," the guard muttered, finally turning away.

The sound of his boots receded, fading into the distance until only the silence remained.

Bastian let out a long, shaky breath, his muscles finally relaxing. "That was too close."

"Welcome to the secret life, Wijaya," Camila said, her voice dripping with irony. She moved away from him, the sound of her leathers soft in the dark. "If we’re going to do this, we’re going to have to get much, much better at vanishing."

"I think I’m starting to get the hang of it," Bastian said, his voice quiet.

"Good," she replied, her tone turning serious. "Because tomorrow is the real test. Julian Vane isn't just a guard, and he’s not going to walk past you if he thinks he has a reason to break you."

Bastian looked toward the darkness of the tunnel. The adaptation in his mind surged 29% complete and he felt a strange, cold resolve settle in his chest.

"Let him come," Bastian said, his voice steady. "I’m ready."

"See that you are," she whispered. "Now get back to your quarters. I’ll take the high path. We meet again tomorrow, same time. Don't be late."

As she slipped away into the shadows, Bastian stood alone in the dark, the echo of their training still ringing in his ears. He wasn't the boy who had begged for a chance in the Chamber of Judgment anymore. He was a piece in a much larger game, and for the first time, he felt like he knew how to play.

The morning air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a jarring departure from the sterile, ozone-heavy atmosphere of the Academy. Bastian stood at the edge of the Ironwood Forest, the towering, jagged trees looming over the clearing like the teeth of a giant beast. Beside him, the other students murmured nervously, their gear clanking as they double-checked their packs.“Keep it together, Wijaya,” Camila muttered, nudging his shoulder. “Don’t look at the canopy like it’s going to eat you. Just find the marked trail and stay in the shade.”Bastian looked at her, his pulse steadying. “You make it sound like a walk through the gardens. We both know they didn’t drop us here just to hike.”Camila smirked, adjusting the strap of her bag. “Well, no. They want to see how we handle real-world resistance. The forest is literally designed to kill anyone who can’t hold their own. Keep your eyes sharp. Don’t trust the birds, and for the love of the stars, don’t eat the berries.”“I’m n
