CHAPTER 7: A CHESS GAME OF LIVES AT THE VALDES MANSION

G-force pressed Matthew into the leather seat of the Gulfstream G650 as it sliced through the darkness above the Mediterranean. Far below, Madrid's lights resembled a burning circuit board. Matthew didn't feel the speed. He only felt time slipping away.

"Thirty minutes until landing, Young Master," Thomas's voice came from the cockpit, strained with tension.

"Too slow, Thomas. Put the helicopter down on the rooftop helipad. Don't use the main apron. The mansion is already in lockdown." Matthew wiped the dried blood from beneath his nose. His eyes remained fixed on the tablet displaying the secret live feed from his grandfather's bedroom.

On the screen, Rodrigo calmly poured a clear liquid from a crystal bottle into Don Alejandro's glass of mineral water. His movements were steady, almost rhythmic. After Alejandro drank it and began coughing violently, Rodrigo simply stood there, checking his watch.

"That bastard is timing his death," Matthew hissed.

"We won't make it in time through the front gate, sir. Rodrigo's guards have already secured the perimeter."

"I don't need the gate. I need gravity."

The Valdes Mansion stood atop the hills of La Moraleja like an arrogant neoclassical fortress. Floodlights swept across the sprawling lawn. As the light helicopter piloted by Thomas hovered low over the eastern radar blind spot, Matthew unfastened his seat belt.

"Sir! We're still ten meters up!" Thomas shouted.

Matthew didn't answer. He jumped. Ares System: Active. Vector Calculation: Initialized.

Matthew landed in a flawless roll across the pavilion rooftop, absorbing the impact with muscles conditioned to endure pain. He sprang to his feet and sprinted toward the second-floor balcony leading directly to his grandfather's private wing.

Crash!

He drove his shoulder through the balcony door. Crystal shards scattered across the Persian carpet like diamonds.

"Who's there?" someone shouted from the hallway. Two guards armed with MP5s emerged around the corner.

Matthew never slowed. To his eyes, the world became a simulation of pure geometry. Neon blue lines mapped the bullets' trajectories before their fingers even touched the triggers.

"Eleven o'clock. Low," Matthew whispered to himself.

He slid across the polished marble floor, slipping beneath the stream of gunfire that tore through expensive oil paintings lining the walls. As he passed between the two guards, he slammed his elbow into the left guard's kneecap and used his momentum to smash the right guard's head into a marble pillar.

Thud! Crack!

"Targets neutralized. Time remaining, four minutes."

Matthew's breathing grew heavier. He kicked open the door to Don Alejandro's bedroom.

The aging patriarch lay on the massive canopy bed, gasping desperately for air. His face had turned blue, and his eyes were rolled upward. Rodrigo was already gone, most likely downstairs preparing the story of Matthew's "capture."

"Grandfather."

Matthew rushed to his side, checking the pulse in Alejandro's neck. One hundred forty BPM. Tachycardia. The neurotoxin was already paralyzing his respiratory muscles.

Matthew tore open the compact medical kit he had brought from the helicopter and pulled out a syringe filled with a high dose of atropine.

"This is going to hurt, Grandfather. Stay with me, or we'll both die tonight."

He drove the needle directly into Alejandro's chest. The old man's body jerked violently. His breathing returned in a harsh, mucus-filled gasp.

"Matthew...?"

Alejandro's voice was barely more than the whisper of death.

"Don't talk. Save your oxygen."

Matthew hoisted his grandfather's frail body over his shoulder. The old man felt as heavy as the dying burden of the entire Valdes dynasty.

As Matthew turned toward the door, the mansion's alarms erupted. Police sirens wailed in the distance, rapidly drawing closer.

"Damn it. Rodrigo called the authorities sooner than I expected."

He stepped into the hallway. Then he stopped.

It felt as though thousands of burning needles had pierced his skull. His vision trembled. The neon blue lines that normally appeared so clear began dissolving into deep crimson.

WARNING: NEURO-OVERLOAD 90%. VISUAL CORRUPTION DETECTED.

"Not now... not now!" Matthew groaned, leaning against the wall while supporting his grandfather's weight.

The world shattered before his eyes. The hallway disappeared. All he saw were pulsating waves of crimson distortion beating in rhythm with his own heart. The sound of tactical boots echoed from both directions.

He was trapped.

"There he is! Second floor! Shoot if he resists!" Enrique, Rodrigo's security chief, bellowed.

Matthew forced himself to run the opposite way, toward the main balcony overlooking the front courtyard. Police cars now filled the grounds below, their red and blue lights flashing endlessly.

"Matthew... put me down..."

Alejandro coughed blood onto Matthew's shoulder.

"Run... by yourself... You can't carry... an old man like me."

"Quiet, Grandfather. You're the only legal authority I have left," Matthew replied, though his voice had begun to waver.

He reached the outer balcony. The cold night air struck his face, but it wasn't enough to cool the fire consuming his brain. He was trapped. Behind him, the hallway doors were smashed open. Ahead lay a fifteen-meter drop from the balcony and dozens of police rifles already aimed in his direction.

Then a shadow stepped out of the darkness. Rodrigo Valdes appeared, dressed impeccably in a tailored black suit, casually holding a SIG Sauer pistol. A smile of pure sociopathic satisfaction spread across his face.

Behind him, the bribed guards and police officers raised their flashlights, illuminating Matthew.

"Put him down, Matthew," Rodrigo said, his voice almost pleasant amid the chaos. "Everyone can see it now. The exiled grandson returns to murder his grandfather for the inheritance. Tragic. Such a perfectly predictable cliché."

Matthew stood at the edge of the balcony, supporting Alejandro's unconscious body with one arm while the other gripped the iron railing so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

His vision had become completely crimson.

Rodrigo was nothing more than a looming black silhouette.

"You poisoned him, Rodrigo. I have the recording," Matthew growled.

"The recording?" Rodrigo chuckled softly. "You mean the server that just exploded downstairs because of the access key you 'used'? There is no evidence, Matthew. There's only you, standing here with your grandfather's blood on your hands."

Rodrigo stepped forward and raised the SIG Sauer, pressing the barrel directly against Matthew's forehead.

"Nobody move!" a police officer shouted from below. "Mr. Valdes, release your hostage!"

Matthew looked down, then back toward Rodrigo's shadow. He could feel the vibrations beneath his feet. The guards were closing in from behind. Logically, there was no escape.

The Ares System continued screaming inside his mind.

ZERO ESCAPE PROBABILITY.

"Goodbye, crippled lawyer," Rodrigo whispered, his finger beginning to squeeze the trigger. "Your death will become the most forgettable footnote in this family's history."

Seventy-two hours after Sofia’s empty funeral, Matthew Valdes had not left the sixtieth floor. His office had been transformed into a sterile command center. A series of monitors displayed stock market charts, SWIFT transfers, and satellite maps tracking property assets across Europe.Matthew sat at the center, the dark circles beneath his eyes hidden behind custom-made sunglasses integrated with Ares sensors. He was no longer grieving. Grief was an emotion that wasted brain glucose. Now, all that remained was an algorithm of destruction.“You haven’t slept in three days, Matthew. Coffee and Adderall won’t replace your burned-out neurons.” Isabella leaned against the doorframe, holding two bottles of chilled green juice.“My neurons can be replaced with the satisfaction of watching Rodrigo beg,” Matthew replied without taking his eyes off the lines of code before him. “What about the bank in the Caymans?”Isabella walked closer and placed the bottle on the desk. “Success. Black smoke still billowed from the wreckage of the overturned Audi in the Level -2 parking garage. The smell of burning gasoline mingled with the scent of charred flesh, an aroma the Ares System identified as a combination of nitrogen, carbon, and denatured protein. But to Matthew Valdes, it was the smell of failure. He stood five meters from the center of the blast. The building’s security officers tried to hold him back, but one look from Matthew’s red eyes made them retreat in fear. The geometric lines in Matthew’s vision flickered wildly as they attempted to map the wreckage.Target: Sofia. Status: Biometric Signal Lost. Probability of Survival: 0.00%.Matthew did not scream. He did not drop to his knees. He simply stared at a silver wristwatch lying on the asphalt several meters from the destroyed driver’s door. It had been a gift from him a month ago. Now its glass was cracked, recording the final seconds of the life of a woman he had only just begun to trust.“Mr. Valdes, this

  • CHAPTER 14: THE COUNCIL OF WOLVES

The ground floor of Valdes Tower had been cleared. Fully armed tactical units stood guard at every corner, but the real tension was in the Round Table Room on the highest floor. There, seven elders of the Valdes clan, old wolves who had already caught the scent of blood, sat waiting.Matthew Valdes stepped inside. He was not wearing sunglasses. His eyes, reddened from ruptured blood vessels, stared straight ahead, giving him the appearance of a wounded predator that was still deadly. Isabella walked beside him, her head held high, giving him visual signals through finger codes hidden within the folds of her dress.“Sit down, Matthew,” Don Carrillo’s dry voice rang out. “Or should I call you ‘Blind Boy’?”Matthew pulled out the heavy chair at the end of the table. The scrape of mahogany against marble sounded like a growl.“My name is still written on the ownership certificate of this building, Carrillo. That is the only identity you need.”“We’ve read your medical records,” Don Ortega

The darkness was different this time. It was not the hollow darkness of an isolation cell, but a warm darkness scented with expensive antiseptic and jasmine. Matthew felt the cool sensation of a compressing gel covering his eyes. Every time he tried to move his eyelids, thousands of microscopic needles seemed to pierce directly into the center of his brain.“Don’t take it off. It’s a cooling polymer designed to stabilize the bleeding in your retinas,” Isabella’s voice came from beside his ear. Cold, yet steady.“Where am I?” Matthew tried to sit up, but his hand brushed against the soft silk sheets of a king-size bed.“My private clinic on the outskirts of Madrid. It doesn’t exist on any government map or Rodrigo’s radar. You’re safe, for now.”Matthew drew a deep breath, trying to map the room through sound. He heard the low hum of a hemodialysis machine and the ticking of a mechanical clock. The room was spacious. The ceiling was high.“How long was I unconscious?”“Six hours. You’r

The Madrid night wind howled across the top floor of Vértigo Restaurant. Four-meter-high glass walls separated Spain's elite from the two-hundred-meter drop below. Inside, crystal chandeliers scattered their light across bottles of Dom Pérignon lined up on silk-covered tables.Matthew Valdes stood near the balcony, slowly swirling a glass of whiskey without ice. The Tom Ford tuxedo he wore felt suffocating. Beneath his shirt, the bruises along his ribs throbbed every time he breathed."They didn't come here for your food, Matthew," Isabella's voice came through the micro earpiece in his ear. "They came to see whether you'll collapse after this morning's logistics incident.""Let them watch," Matthew replied softly, barely moving his lips. "Vultures always gather before the lion is truly dead. They just want to know when they can start picking at my flesh."Matthew turned to face the room. The five largest shareholders of Valdes Group sat at the main table. To Matthew, they were five s

When Matthew stepped inside, the sound of his footsteps against the Carrara marble triggered an instant wave of silence. Hundreds of employees stood rigidly, lowering their heads as he passed.Matthew did not see those faces filled with hatred or fear. To him, the lobby was merely a long corridor filled with unstable centers of gravity. He could sense racing heartbeats and tense shoulder muscles, all of them data revealing their unease."Mr. Valdes," a receptionist whispered, her voice trembling at a frequency of 320 hertz. Fear.Matthew kept walking without looking back. Behind him, Sofia, now dressed in a sharp gray business suit, struggled to keep pace with his long strides."What's on the morning schedule, sir?"
