Chapter 2: The Rusted Throne

The low hum of the Rolls-Royce BR725 turbofan engines was the first thing that greeted Matthew's returning consciousness. The sound was steady, deep, and stable at four hundred hertz.

Matthew slowly opened his eyes. The ceiling of the private jet's cabin was upholstered in gray Alcantara leather. He tried to move his right hand. Pain. An IV needle was embedded in the back of his hand, feeding a clear fluid into his bloodstream that carried a sharp chemical scent, probably a mixture of vitamin B complex and neuro-stabilizers.

"Don't pull it out. You just had a minor grand mal seizure in the helicopter."

The voice came from his three o'clock.

Matthew turned his head. Across from him sat an elderly man in a flawless charcoal three-piece suit. To Matthew's eyes, the man's face was nothing but geometric distortions, a sharply defined jawline, perfectly symmetrical cheekbones, and a pair of eyes whose center of gravity never shifted.

"Grandfather."

Matthew's voice was hoarse, like sandpaper scraping across wood.

Don Alejandro Valdes took a sip of whiskey from a crystal glass.

"Six professionals killed with your bare hands and one stolen pistol. You have a gift for becoming an executioner, Matthew. Unfortunately, I don't need an executioner. I need a legal genius who can save my money."

Matthew ripped the IV needle from his hand. Blood seeped from the puncture wound, but he ignored it.

"Where are we?"

"Thirty thousand feet above the Bay of Biscay. Heading for Madrid."

Alejandro tossed an iPad Pro onto Matthew's lap.

"You have six hours before we land. And you have three days before the International Financial Services Authority freezes every cent the Valdes family owns."

Matthew closed his eyes for a moment, trying to suppress the throbbing at his temples.

"I just buried my mother, Grandfather. And you want me to handle creative accounting?"

"Your mother died because she was weak. She ran from her destiny as a Valdes, and look where it brought her. A lonely grave on a deserted cliff."

Alejandro leaned forward, his presence pressing down like the gravity of a dead planet.

"Listen carefully, Matthew. Valdes & Associates is the heart of this empire. Your uncle, Rodrigo, has made a complete mess of things. He was so busy bribing politicians that he forgot to cover the money laundering trail in Switzerland. Four billion euros in our assets will be seized within seventy-two hours."

Matthew powered on the tablet. His eyes scanned thousands of lines of financial data. The numbers streamed across his vision like a flowing matrix.

"What if I fail?" Matthew asked without looking up.

"Simple. I'll hand you over to the French police as the prime suspect in the Menton massacre. You'll rot in prison, or Rodrigo will send someone to make sure you die in solitary confinement. The choice is yours, become a king in Madrid or a corpse behind bars."

Matthew didn't answer. His focus had already disappeared into the documents before him. Inside his mind, the Ares System came back online, albeit in low power mode. Patterns began to emerge.

"This data is garbage," Matthew whispered.

"What do you mean?" Alejandro frowned.

"Rodrigo deliberately scrambled the encryption algorithm. This isn't administrative incompetence. It's planned sabotage. He wants the firm to collapse so he can buy back its assets through shell companies in the Cayman Islands for one cent on the euro."

Matthew wiped away the blood that had begun trickling from his nose again.

"He isn't just stealing your money, Grandfather. He's erasing your name from history."

Alejandro fell silent. His whiskey glass clinked softly as he set it on the table.

"Can you fix it?"

"In three days? Legally, it's impossible." Matthew stared at the stock charts glowing crimson.

"But the law isn't about what's right. The law is about who can build the most convincing narrative in front of a judge. I need unrestricted access to the central servers in Valdes Tower. No filters. No oversight from Rodrigo."

"You'll have it. But remember, Matthew..."

Alejandro stood and squeezed his grandson's shoulder with painful force.

"In Madrid, the walls have ears, and every shadow carries a knife. Trust no one, not even the servant pouring your coffee."

Six hours later. Barajas Airport, Madrid.

A convoy of three black Rolls-Royce Cullinans waited on the private apron. Heavy rain drenched the Spanish capital, creating a melancholy atmosphere that stood in sharp contrast to the luxury on display.

Matthew stepped off the jet wearing a clean black dress shirt provided by Alejandro's staff. His head still throbbed. Every raindrop striking the umbrella above him sounded like a tiny explosion inside his ears.

"Welcome home, Young Master," said a middle-aged man holding the umbrella.

Matthew recognized the pattern of his voice. Thomas. His personal chauffeur from childhood, before he had been exiled to France.

"It's been a long time, Thomas," Matthew said flatly.

"You look... different, sir. Sharper."

"The world has a brutal way of sharpening people, Thomas."

The drive into downtown Madrid passed in oppressive silence. Through the car window, Matthew watched the blurred city lights. To him, the city was nothing more than a concrete labyrinth filled with unpredictable variables.

The convoy stopped in front of Valdes Tower, a sixty-story glass skyscraper dominating Madrid's skyline.

Inside the lobby, rows of armed guards stood at rigid attention. The elevator doors opened onto the top floor. Executive headquarters. A man with slicked-back hair stood waiting. His suit cost as much as a luxury car, and his smile... Even through his prosopagnosia, Matthew could sense the deception radiating from the structure of the man's facial muscles.

Rodrigo Valdes.

His uncle. The sociopath responsible for orchestrating his mother's death.

"Matthew! My beloved nephew!"

Rodrigo spread his arms and strode forward theatrically.

Matthew remained still. He mapped Rodrigo's movements. His left foot dragged slightly. An old injury? His right hand slipped into his pocket, gripping something? No. Just an arrogant habit.

Rodrigo embraced him. The hug felt like the coils of a python. The scent of expensive oud cologne mixed with cigar smoke filled the air.

"My condolences about your mother. Such a terrible tragedy. France has become awfully dangerous lately, hasn't it?"

Rodrigo spoke with carefully rehearsed sympathy for Alejandro's benefit as the old man approached behind them.

But when Rodrigo leaned close to Matthew's ear, his tone changed. His voice dropped several octaves into a cold whisper that only Matthew could hear.

"You should've stayed hidden in your hole, Matthew," Rodrigo whispered. "Your mother died because she forgot her place. She actually thought she could challenge me with those worthless documents."

Rodrigo released the embrace and slapped Matthew's cheek with unnecessary force. His eyes gleamed with triumph.

"Don't end up joining her in the grave just because you think your law degree makes you smart. Around here, the law is whatever I say it is, not what's written in a book."

Matthew didn't respond to the provocation. He simply stared straight toward where Rodrigo's face should have been. All he saw was data. Rodrigo's heart rate had climbed to eighty-five beats per minute. He was nervous. Matthew's presence threatened him.

"Thank you for the warm welcome, Uncle," Matthew said, his voice as cold as polar ice. "I've already reviewed the financial records you've been managing. Very... creative. I imagine it took quite some effort to hide theft on that scale."

Rodrigo's smile froze. "What did you say?"

"Grandfather gave me three days to clean up this mess."

Matthew walked past Rodrigo without another glance, heading toward the massive desk at the far end of the office.

"My advice, Uncle, start packing. Because once I'm finished with this server, there won't be a place in Spain safe enough for you to hide."

Matthew sat in the executive chair and rested his hands on the cool teak desk. He could feel Rodrigo's sharp gaze drilling into his back.

"Thomas," Matthew called.

"Yes, Young Master?"

"Bring me black coffee. No sugar. And assemble the best legal team we have. I want them here in ten minutes."

Matthew powered on the massive monitor in front of him. His pale reflection appeared against the black screen. He couldn't recognize his own face. But he recognized his eyes. The eyes of a man who had nothing left to lose except his vengeance.

Behind the closed glass doors, Rodrigo stared at Matthew with carefully restrained fury. He pulled out his phone and sent a brief text message to someone outside. The target is inside the building. Begin phase two of the sabotage. If he finds Vault Alpha, kill him tonight.

Matthew caught Rodrigo's reflection in the dark monitor. He knew that bastard of an uncle was planning something. He could sense the uneven rhythm of Rodrigo's breathing from across the room.

"The game's begun, Uncle," Matthew whispered to himself.

He began typing. His fingers danced across the keyboard with inhuman speed. One encryption layer after another collapsed. Amid the endless sea of data, Matthew found something that should never have existed.

A hidden folder labeled: PROJECT ARES - PROTOTYPE 01

Matthew's heart pounded. That was the name of the system inside his head. How could his uncle or his grandfather possibly know about it?

Suddenly, every light on the floor began flashing red. A deafening security alarm echoed throughout the office.

WARNING: SYSTEM BREACH DETECTED. INITIATING DATA PURGE.

"Damn it," Matthew cursed.

He turned toward the door. The guards who had been stationed outside were now advancing into the room. This time, they weren't carrying umbrellas. They were carrying suppressed automatic weapons.

Rodrigo stood in the doorway, grinning broadly as he held up a small remote control.

"Three days is far too long, Matthew!" Rodrigo shouted over the screaming alarm. "Let's shorten it to three minutes."

Matthew froze in his chair. His vision blurred again. Red. Everything turned red. The neuro-overload struck much sooner than he had expected. Across from him, the muzzles of the weapons slowly rose until they were aimed directly at his chest.

Seventy-two hours after Sofia’s empty funeral, Matthew Valdes had not left the sixtieth floor. His office had been transformed into a sterile command center. A series of monitors displayed stock market charts, SWIFT transfers, and satellite maps tracking property assets across Europe.Matthew sat at the center, the dark circles beneath his eyes hidden behind custom-made sunglasses integrated with Ares sensors. He was no longer grieving. Grief was an emotion that wasted brain glucose. Now, all that remained was an algorithm of destruction.“You haven’t slept in three days, Matthew. Coffee and Adderall won’t replace your burned-out neurons.” Isabella leaned against the doorframe, holding two bottles of chilled green juice.“My neurons can be replaced with the satisfaction of watching Rodrigo beg,” Matthew replied without taking his eyes off the lines of code before him. “What about the bank in the Caymans?”Isabella walked closer and placed the bottle on the desk. “Success. Black smoke still billowed from the wreckage of the overturned Audi in the Level -2 parking garage. The smell of burning gasoline mingled with the scent of charred flesh, an aroma the Ares System identified as a combination of nitrogen, carbon, and denatured protein. But to Matthew Valdes, it was the smell of failure. He stood five meters from the center of the blast. The building’s security officers tried to hold him back, but one look from Matthew’s red eyes made them retreat in fear. The geometric lines in Matthew’s vision flickered wildly as they attempted to map the wreckage.Target: Sofia. Status: Biometric Signal Lost. Probability of Survival: 0.00%.Matthew did not scream. He did not drop to his knees. He simply stared at a silver wristwatch lying on the asphalt several meters from the destroyed driver’s door. It had been a gift from him a month ago. Now its glass was cracked, recording the final seconds of the life of a woman he had only just begun to trust.“Mr. Valdes, this

The ground floor of Valdes Tower had been cleared. Fully armed tactical units stood guard at every corner, but the real tension was in the Round Table Room on the highest floor. There, seven elders of the Valdes clan, old wolves who had already caught the scent of blood, sat waiting.Matthew Valdes stepped inside. He was not wearing sunglasses. His eyes, reddened from ruptured blood vessels, stared straight ahead, giving him the appearance of a wounded predator that was still deadly. Isabella walked beside him, her head held high, giving him visual signals through finger codes hidden within the folds of her dress.“Sit down, Matthew,” Don Carrillo’s dry voice rang out. “Or should I call you ‘Blind Boy’?”Matthew pulled out the heavy chair at the end of the table. The scrape of mahogany against marble sounded like a growl.“My name is still written on the ownership certificate of this building, Carrillo. That is the only identity you need.”“We’ve read your medical records,” Don Ortega

The darkness was different this time. It was not the hollow darkness of an isolation cell, but a warm darkness scented with expensive antiseptic and jasmine. Matthew felt the cool sensation of a compressing gel covering his eyes. Every time he tried to move his eyelids, thousands of microscopic needles seemed to pierce directly into the center of his brain.“Don’t take it off. It’s a cooling polymer designed to stabilize the bleeding in your retinas,” Isabella’s voice came from beside his ear. Cold, yet steady.“Where am I?” Matthew tried to sit up, but his hand brushed against the soft silk sheets of a king-size bed.“My private clinic on the outskirts of Madrid. It doesn’t exist on any government map or Rodrigo’s radar. You’re safe, for now.”Matthew drew a deep breath, trying to map the room through sound. He heard the low hum of a hemodialysis machine and the ticking of a mechanical clock. The room was spacious. The ceiling was high.“How long was I unconscious?”“Six hours. You’r

The Madrid night wind howled across the top floor of Vértigo Restaurant. Four-meter-high glass walls separated Spain's elite from the two-hundred-meter drop below. The Tom Ford tuxedo he wore felt suffocating. Beneath his shirt, the bruises along his ribs throbbed every time he breathed."They didn't come here for your food, Matthew," Isabella's voice came through the micro earpiece in his ear. "They came to see whether you'll collapse after this morning's logistics incident.""Let them watch," Matthew replied softly, barely moving his lips. "Vultures always gather before the lion is truly dead. They just want to know when they can start picking at my flesh."Matthew turned to face the room. The five largest shareholders of Valdes Group sat at the main table. To Matthew, they were five s
