The damp moss beneath Adrian’s back did little to cushion the sheer, bone-deep exhaustion weighing him down. His chest rose and fell in heavy, ragged expansions, his lungs burning with the residual taste of ozone and ash. His wings, folded tightly against his spine, throbbed with a dull, white-hot ache. But his arms never loosened. He kept them locked around Zafriel, holding the champion’s battered, heat-radiating body securely against his chest.

"Hey," Adrian rasped, his voice a low, gravelly vibration in the quiet of the ravine. "You still with me?"

Zafriel let out a weak, shaky breath against Adrian’s collarbone. His fingers, pale and trembling, twitched against Adrian's broad shoulder. "Yeah. Barely. Feels like my veins are full of lead."

"That's the magic-suppressing iron," Adrian muttered, shifting his grip to slide one massive arm under Zafriel's knees and the other behind his back. "We can't stay here. Renzio’s voice carried for miles, and those paladins aren't stupid. They’ll have trackers on us in minutes."

"Where... where are we going?" Zafriel asked, his eyelids fluttering as he fought to stay conscious.

"The outer wastes," Adrian said, pushing himself up with a grunt of pure effort. His legs shook, but his demonic physiology forced his muscles to lock and hold. "We have to cross the burning bridge. Once we’re past the border, the Alliance’s jurisdictional magic drops off. It’s the only place we can buy some time."

Adrian carried him through the dense, suffocating dark of the ravine. The forest gradually thinned, the lush green canopy giving way to jagged, black glass formations and the cracked, glowing orange fissures of the volcanic border. Ahead of them lay the bridge—a natural arch of hardened basalt spanning a massive, roaring river of liquid fire that cut the civilized world off from the ash-choked wastes.

The heat radiating from the lava below was immense, distorting the air in shimmering, dizzying waves. Adrian didn't hesitate. He stepped onto the burning bridge, his clawed feet digging into the hot stone. Every step felt like walking through a furnace, but he kept his eyes locked on the gray, dead expanse of the wasteland ahead.

Zafriel winced, burying his face deeper into the crook of Adrian's neck to shield himself from the rising heat. "It’s hot," he murmured. "Really hot."

"I know. Just hold on. We're almost across," Adrian said, his voice tight.

They crossed into the gray-tinged desolation of the outer wastes. The sky here was a permanent, bruised purple, choked with falling ash that drifted down like cold snow. Adrian navigated the jagged, barren landscape until he found what he was looking for—a secluded, deep volcanic crag hidden behind a curtain of jagged obsidian spires.

He carried Zafriel inside the shallow cave, gently laying him down on a smooth, flat shelf of black stone.

Zafriel let out a long, ragged sigh, his head rolling to the side. The shreds of his white tunic were stiff with dried blood, and the branding mark on his collarbone still glowed with a faint, angry red light, pulsing like an ember.

Adrian knelt beside him, his massive, dark hands hovering over the raw, ruined flesh of Zafriel’s chest. "I need to look at these wounds. The light-brand is still eating at your mana."

"Go ahead," Zafriel whispered, looking up at him with those brilliant, cloudy blue eyes. "Not like I can run away anyway."

"Don't joke about that," Adrian said, his voice dropping. He gently tore away the remaining fabric of the tunic, exposing the brutal, crisscrossing lash marks on Zafriel’s pale, muscular torso. The sight made Adrian's demonic heart hammer with a violent, possessive rage. He wanted to go back and rip the inquisitors apart piece by piece.

He pressed his cool, shadow-infused palms against Zafriel’s skin, right over the burning brand.

Zafriel gasped, his body arching off the stone as the opposing magical forces clashed. "Ah... shit, Adrian, that cold..."

"I know. I'm sorry. I'm using my void energy to smother the light-brand," Adrian explained, his brow furrowed in deep concentration. "Just breathe through it. Look at me."

Zafriel locked his eyes onto Adrian's glowing red ones, his fingers reaching out to grip Adrian's thick, corded forearms. The sheer physical contrast between them was devastating—the cold, dark, and terrifyingly powerful demon lord kneeling over the pale, radiant, and broken champion. But as Adrian’s cool energy slowly neutralized the burning brand, the agonizing tension in Zafriel's muscles began to melt, replaced by a thick, heavy warmth.

"Better?" Adrian asked softly, his thumb gently wiping a smear of soot and sweat from Zafriel's cheek.

"Yeah," Zafriel breathed, his voice barely a whisper. He didn't let go of Adrian’s arms. Instead, he pulled himself up slightly, his face inches from Adrian's. "You look tired, Adrian. Really tired."

"I'm fine."

"Liar," Zafriel said, a soft, reckless smile touching his lips. "You lost your legendary bracer, you blew up a tower, you flew us down a mountain, and you're still trying to act like the big, bad villain."

"I am the villain, Zafriel. The entire world is coming for us because of me." Adrian’s chest tighted with a sudden, overwhelming wave of fear—not for himself, but for the man in front of him. "If I hadn't come for you, you'd still have your title. You'd be safe."

"I wouldn't be safe. I'd be a puppet," Zafriel said, his gaze intense, completely stripping away the armor of his training. "I don't care about the Alliance. I don't care about the treaty. If the world wants to burn us, let it. I’d rather go down with you than live without you."

The raw confession shattered the last of Adrian's restraint.

He leaned down, his lips crushing against Zafriel’s in a desperate, deeply possessive kiss. Zafriel let out a soft, needy sound, his arms wrapping around Adrian’s thick neck, pulling him down until their chests pressed flush together. The heat of Zafriel’s recovering light magic met the cool, dark void of Adrian’s body, igniting a primal, desperate hunger that swept through them both like wildfire.

Adrian’s massive hands slid down Zafriel’s bare, bruised sides, his claws scraping lightly against his skin, leaving faint, white trails of electricity. Zafriel shivered, his hips arching up to meet Adrian’s weight. The cold stone of the cave was forgotten, replaced by the slick, breathless friction of their skin. Every touch was an unspoken vow, a desperate claim of ownership and survival in the face of certain doom.

Adrian buried his face in the crook of Zafriel's neck, his teeth gently nipping at the sensitive skin of his shoulder, making the champion gasp and tighten his grip around Adrian's broad shoulders. They clung to each other in the dark, desperate and wild, drowning out the cold wind of the wasteland with the frantic, rhythmic heat of their own bodies.

Hours later, the quiet of the cave was violently shattered.

Adrian sat up instantly, his demonic senses screaming in high-alert warning. He pulled his dark cloak over Zafriel’s resting, bare form, his red eyes flashing in the darkness.

Outside, the heavy, clinical hum of the system interface was vibrating through the air. And with it came voices.

"Hey, check the coordinate map. The ping came from this sector."

"Are you sure? The terrain here is level eighty plus. We shouldn't even be able to damage the mobs here."

"Dude, the world event just launched. The developer notes said the Demon Monarch is severely debuffed. If we get the last hit, the loot drop is going to be insane!"

Adrian’s blood ran cold. He stood up, stepping to the mouth of the cave.

Through the gray ashfall, he saw them. A group of five figures navigating the jagged rocks. They wore mismatched, highly optimized gear, and above their heads, visible only to Adrian’s system vision, floated glowing names: Kaivan Suriyen, Zayden Arisara, Keiran Wirat.

Players, Adrian thought, his teeth grinding. The tracking unit. The system is spawning them in force to clean up the narrative.

He looked back at Zafriel, who was struggling to stand, his face pale but determined. "Adrian? What is that? They don't smell like Alliance soldiers."

"They're worse," Adrian said, his mind racing. "They're hounds. And they won't stop until they get their loot."

"We can't fight them," Zafriel said, his voice tight as he gripped his side. "Not like this."

"I know," Adrian said. He looked around the barren valley, his mind desperately scanning his memory of the game's original map layout. This zone... the outer wastes... there was an unresolved clipping error in the geometry near the northern ridge of this crag. A developer "black box" pocket dimension that was never patched.

"Follow me," Adrian commanded, grabbing Zafriel's hand. "We need to run. Now!"

They burst from the cave, their boots kicking up clouds of gray ash.

"Look!" one of the players, Zayden Arisara, yelled, pointing a glowing staff toward the ridge. "The boss! He’s running!"

"I found the boss!" another shouted, his voice echoing across the desolate canyons with a glitched, artificial amplification. "The event quest is active!"

"They're coming fast. We need to move.""I can tell," Zafriel panted, his breath ragged and shallow. The dark cloak Adrian had draped over him had slipped slightly, exposing the pale, bruised curve of his shoulder, which was now slick with sweat and the fine gray soot of the wastes. He stumbled, his knees buckling slightly, but Adrian’s massive arm was already there, catching him by the waist and hoisting him back up against his side. "Feels like my legs are made of lead. Seriously, how much of that magic-suppressing crap did they put in those chains?""Enough to hold a champion," Adrian grunted, his red eyes scanning the ridges. "And since the system is actively debuffing my stats

Down in the valley, the golden banners of the Light Alliance fluttered through the haze, a mocking display of triumphant zeal. He watched the heavy, iron-reinforced carriage—surrounded by a tight, impenetrable phalanx of high-paladins—slowly roll away. Inside it, bound in glowing, magic-suppressing chains, was Zafriel. His chest felt hollow, a raw, aching vacuum where his hard-wired demonic instincts and his lingering human panic clashed in a violent tempest. If the Alliance launches another offensive, our current positions won't hold.""Go back to the Spire, Kaelan," Adrian said, his voice flat, dangerously calm. He didn't turn around. "The High Council... they didn't wait for your report," Alric Phan choked out, his body trembling violently as he collapsed onto the wet basalt. "They've initiated the purge. They aren't just pushing the border, Lord Zafriel... they've ordered a complete, scorched-earth cleansing of the entire southern region. They're burning everything. Humans, demons, villages... they're going to wipe us all out."The heavy, humid air of the cavern grew instantly freezing. The lingering heat of their interrupted kiss evaporated, replaced by a sharp, suffocating dread.Zafriel dropped to his knees beside the dying scout, his hands flaring with a warm, golden light as he pressed them against Alric’s bleeding side. "Alric, breathe. Hang on. Who authorized this? The Grand Inquisitor?""Daryen Surin..." Alric gasped, his eyes rolling back as the light magic stabilized his shallow breathing. "He brought the decree. "Nothing," Adrian whispered, the weight of the crown feeling like a leaden shackle. He turned to the Light Champion, his gaze locking with those piercing blue eyes. "It’s time to stop worrying about the border, Zafriel. We have much larger problems to survive."Zafriel’s hand was still suspended in the empty air, his fingers brushing the exact spot where the golden letters of the system notification had just been hovering. Before Zafriel’s light-attuned senses could register the residual magical hum of the interface, Adrian swiped his massive, clawed hand through the space, scattering the lingering particles of digital gold into nothingness. The glowing text window dissolved instantly, swallowed by the thick, rising steam of the cavern."Seriously, what was that?" Zafriel asked, his brow furrowing as he looked from the empty air back to Adrian. "The air felt... glitched. Like a tapestry with a loose thread.""Just a pocket of unstable atmospheric mana," Adrian lied smoothly, his grave
