Chapter 4
"And you just happened to be alone with him when the fire started." Alex's voice was sharp as a blade. "How convenient indeed."
Lisa's hands clenched into fists at her sides. "You're being completely unreasonable. Nothing happened between Ben and me. We were working on the merger with Harrison Industries. That's all."
"Fine. Let's say I believe you." Alex sat up slightly, wincing as pain shot through his leg. "Let's say you were just working. Does that excuse everything else?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Did your business deal require you to let your husband wait for death in a burning building?" Alex's voice rose, years of suppressed frustration finally breaking free. "Did it require you to redirect every medical professional away from me so your 'business partner' could get VIP treatment for a scratch? Did it require you to spend the entire night by his side while your husband—the man you married, the man who saved your life—lay unconscious and alone?"
Each word struck Lisa like a physical blow. Her mouth opened, then closed. For a moment, something flickered in her eyes—guilt, maybe, or uncertainty.
But then her expression hardened again, that familiar mask of cold indifference sliding back into place.
"You're being petty," she said finally, her voice sharp. "You can't handle even the slightest inconvenience. I'm here now, aren't I? What more do you want from me?"
Alex stared at her in disbelief. "What do I want? I want my wife to care whether I live or die! I want—"
Lisa's phone rang, cutting him off. She pulled it from her purse and glanced at the screen. Her entire demeanor changed instantly—her face softened, her posture relaxed.
"Hello?" Her voice was gentle, warm. Nothing like the ice she'd been speaking to Alex with.
"Lisa? Where are you?" A man's voice came through the speaker, loud enough for Alex to hear. "I woke up and you were gone. I'm... I'm scared. The room is so dark, and I keep thinking about the fire. I can't sleep without you here."
Alex watched his wife's face transform. Her eyes filled with concern, her lips curved into a sympathetic frown.
"Oh, Ben, I'm so sorry," she cooed, her voice dripping with tenderness. "I just had to take care of something quickly. I'll be back in five minutes, I promise. Try to relax, okay? Everything's going to be fine."
"Please hurry. I need you."
"I will, sweetheart. Just hold on."
Sweetheart. She called him sweetheart.
Lisa ended the call and slipped the phone back into her purse. When she looked at Alex again, all the warmth had vanished. Her expression was cold and distant once more.
"I need to go," she said flatly.
"Of course you do." Alex's voice was hollow.
Lisa straightened her shoulders, her CEO mask firmly in place. "I don't appreciate your accusations, Alex. I haven't done anything wrong. If anyone should be reflecting on their behavior, it's you. This jealousy, this inability to understand priorities—it's childish."
"Priorities," Alex repeated numbly. "Right."
"Ben has been through a traumatic experience. He's a civilian with no training for situations like this. He needs support right now. You, on the other hand, are a trained professional who chose this career knowing the risks."
Lisa picked up her designer handbag, adjusting the strap on her shoulder. "You should know how to handle difficult situations without falling apart emotionally."
She walked toward the door, her heels clicking with each step.
"Think about what I said, Alex. When you're ready to apologize for this attitude, you can call me. Until then, I have responsibilities to attend to."
The door closed behind her with a soft click.
Alex sat in the empty room, staring at the space where his wife had just been standing. The faint scent of her expensive perfume lingered in the air.
Apologize. She actually expected him to apologize.
He looked down at his bandaged leg, at the IV still pumping fluids into his arm, at the monitors tracking his heartbeat and oxygen levels. He'd nearly died saving her. He'd dragged himself through fire and smoke, carrying another person to safety, all while his own wife had abandoned him.
And she wanted an apology.
Alex closed his eyes, and for the first time since the fire, he let himself truly feel the full weight of his reality. His marriage wasn't broken. It had never really existed in the first place.
He'd been in love with an illusion while Lisa had been... what? Using him? Tolerating him? He didn't even know anymore.

"NO!" Peter's shout echoed through the hallway. "This isn't fair! This isn't right! Director Chen, you can't—you can't just let him destroy our lives like this!"Chen's expression didn't change. "I can, and I have. Captain Morrison acted within his authority. His decisions stand.""But—but—" Peter was shaking now, his entire world collapsing. "I just laughed! That's all I did! And my whole future is gone? My whole career? Everything I worked for?""Actions have consequences," Chen said flatly. "You should have thought about that before disrespecting a captain in his own station."Jenkins closed his eyes briefly, a bitter smile touching his lips. Of course, he thought. Of course Chen would back Morrison publicly. Can't undermine the chain of command. Can't let the crew think they can challenge authority without consequences. The system protects itself.Morrison turned to the security guards, his voice carrying clear authority now. "You heard the director. These two are trespassing on f
CHAPTER 81 PART 1
Director Chen's presence seemed to fill the entire hallway, his authority so absolute that every firefighter present instinctively lowered their heads in respect. Even the security guards, who'd been seconds away from removing Jenkins and Peter, stood at attention, waiting for direction.Everyone bowed their heads.Everyone except Morrison.Morrison kept his face turned toward Chen, his expression still hard, still defiant. His jaw was set, his shoulders squared. He'd just exercised his power, had reminded everyone who he was, and he wasn't about to shrink before Chen again. Not in front of his crew. Not after what he'd just done.Chen's eyes swept across the assembled group, taking in the scene with the practiced assessment of someone who'd been managing crises for decades. His gaze lingered on Jenkins and Peter, then moved to the security guards, then finally settled on Morrison."I'll ask one more time," Chen said, his voice carrying clearly despite its measured tone. "What is happ
CHAPTER 80 PART 2
"No," Jenkins interrupted gently but firmly. "What you have to do is maintain your dignity. That's the one thing Morrison can't take away from you unless you give it to him freely."Peter's expression crumbled. "Dignity doesn't pay student loans. It doesn't explain to my parents why their investment in my education was wasted. It doesn't give me back the future I just lost.""I know," Jenkins said quietly. "And I promise you—I swear to you—that I'll help you. One way or another, we'll figure this out. But not by groveling before that man. Not by giving him the show he wants.""You're both idiots," Morrison's voice cut through their quiet conversation. "Complete idiots. Jenkins, you're still trying to play hero? Still trying to save the day? You can't even save yourself!"He looked at the assembled firefighters, making sure they were all paying attention. "This is what happens to heroes in the real world. They don't get rewarded. They don't get celebrated. They get crushed by people wh
CHAPTER 80 PART 1
Morrison's laughter echoed through the hallway—loud, harsh, and triumphant. It was the laugh of a man who'd finally regained control, who'd reminded everyone why they should fear him, who'd proven that despite everything, he still held power over their lives and careers."You see?" Morrison said, his voice still carrying that manic edge. "You see what happens? This is what power looks like! This is what authority means!"He pointed at Jenkins and Peter, his finger jabbing aggressively through the air. "I don't care what anyone thinks about how I lead. I don't care what accusations you throw at me. Because at the end of the day, I'm the one who decides who stays and who goes. I'm the one with the connections. I'm the one who makes the calls that determine your futures!"Jenkins stood silent, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached, watching Morrison's victory lap with barely suppressed rage."You two think you're so brave?" Morrison continued, his voice dripping with mockery. "You think s
CHAPTER 79 PART 2
Peter, who'd been watching this entire exchange with growing horror, felt his legs go weak. His vision actually blurred at the edges, the hallway seeming to swim around him."No," Peter whispered, the word barely audible. "Please, no..."But Morrison wasn't listening. He was on another call now, this time to someone at the city's emergency services coordination office. "I need both names entered into the disciplinary database. Jenkins and Chen. Both terminated for cause. Both unsuitable for rehire..."Jenkins stood frozen, watching his career—his entire professional identity—being systematically destroyed right in front of him. He'd known this was possible. Had told himself he was prepared for it. Had convinced himself that principles mattered more than paychecks. But knowing something intellectually and experiencing it emotionally were two completely different things. The pain was like being stabbed. Like having molten metal poured directly onto his soul. Twenty years of service, of

Something inside Morrison snapped. All the humiliation he'd endured—Chen's slap, the threats to his career, the impossible demand that he grovel before Alex—it all came boiling up in a wave of rage so intense he couldn't see straight. His hand flew up, palm open, aimed directly at Jenkins's face.I'm a captain! Morrison's mind screamed. A CAPTAIN! I've earned respect! I've put in twenty years! I deserve authority! And this nobody—this worthless, insubordinate nobody—dares to speak to me like this? In front of everyone? The slap was meant to be devastating. To be a statement. To prove that Captain James Morrison still commanded respect and fear in his own station, regardless of what Director Chen thought. But the blow never landed.Jenkins moved with surprising speed, his body shifting to the side, his head ducking slightly. Morrison's hand whistled through empty air, the momentum throwing Morrison slightly off-balance.Jenkins straightened, a cold smile playing at his lips. "Did you r
