For three years, Ethan Carter has lived as the live-in son-in-law of the Lawson family, treated like a servant rather than a husband. He cooks, cleans, repairs broken appliances, and endures constant humiliation from his in-laws — to them, he is nothing more than a poor, useless man who can never give Sophia Lawson the life she deserves. As Sophia grows distant and Kyle, a wealthy and arrogant businessman, begins pursuing her openly, Ethan's marriage slowly falls apart. Yet instead of fighting back with anger, Ethan quietly works to rebuild his life. A chance encounter with a powerful businessman opens unexpected doors, allowing him to prove his intelligence, integrity, and determination, one step at a time. While everyone sees only a powerless son-in-law, mysterious figures begin investigating Ethan's past. Hidden clues suggest that his childhood was built on lies, and that someone has spent years protecting him from the shadows. At the center of the mystery lies a single message: "Tell my son to meet me at the top." As Ethan rises through the world of business, powerful enemies emerge, old secrets come to light, and a hidden family legacy threatens to change everything. But before he can claim his destiny, he must overcome betrayal, conspiracy, and the painful scars of his past. Will the man everyone called useless become the leader of one of the world's most powerful families? Or will the enemies waiting in the shadows destroy him before he reaches the top?

Chapter 1 - A Wedding Without Love

The wedding hall was filled with soft music, expensive decorations, and smiling guests. Crystal chandeliers lit up the room, while waiters moved from table to table serving drinks and snacks. It looked like the perfect wedding.

But only one person knew the truth.

Standing in front of the stage in a black suit, Ethan Carter forced a smile that never reached his eyes. Today was supposed to be the happiest day of his life. Instead, it felt like he was attending someone else's dream.

"Smile a little," the wedding host whispered. "The cameras are on you."

Ethan nodded politely. "I'll try."

At the other end of the stage stood Sophia Lawson in a beautiful white wedding dress. She looked breathtaking. Her makeup was flawless, and the sparkling diamond necklace around her neck made her look like a princess. Many of the male guests couldn't stop looking at her.

"If I could marry a woman like Sophia, I'd be the luckiest man alive," one guest whispered.

Another man sighed. "It's a pity she ended up marrying... him."

Their eyes shifted toward Ethan.

"He doesn't even have a stable job."

"I heard he grew up in an orphanage."

"They're from two completely different worlds."

Their whispers spread through the hall. Ethan heard every word, but he kept his expression calm. He had heard worse.

Three months earlier...

Mr. Lawson had suddenly visited the small apartment where Ethan lived alone. The older man had made an unbelievable proposal.

"I want you to marry my daughter."

Ethan had been stunned. "Sir... I think you've mistaken me for someone else."

Mr. Lawson shook his head. "No. I know exactly who you are."

Ethan couldn't understand. He was an ordinary young man struggling to survive. Why would a wealthy family want him as their son-in-law?

As if reading his thoughts, Mr. Lawson sighed. "My father made a promise to an old friend many years ago. He insisted that one day our families should become one. My father passed away before he could fulfill that promise. I intend to keep my word."

Ethan had remained silent.

Mr. Lawson continued. "You are an honest man. You work hard. I've investigated your background. I know your character."

Ethan had looked down at his hands. "But... your daughter. Does she agree?"

Mr. Lawson didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked out of the window. "She will."

Those words should have worried Ethan, but he was too surprised to think deeply.

A week later, he met Sophia for the first time. She sat across from him in an elegant café, wearing a simple blue dress. She was even more beautiful than the photographs.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke. Finally, Sophia broke the silence.

"I don't love you." Her voice was calm, almost cold. "This marriage isn't my choice."

Ethan looked at her quietly. "I know."

She frowned slightly. "You know?"

"My father explained everything."

Sophia folded her arms. "Good. Then this will be easier." She looked directly into his eyes. "I won't stop you if you decide to reject this marriage."

Ethan was silent for a moment. Then he smiled gently. "I won't reject it."

Sophia looked surprised. "Why?"

Ethan answered honestly. "Because your father kept his promise. I don't want to be the reason he breaks it."

Sophia couldn't believe what she had heard. Most men would have demanded love, or respect, or at least an explanation. But Ethan asked for nothing.

She looked away. "You're strange."

Ethan laughed softly. "I've been called worse."

Sophia stood up. Before leaving, she spoke without turning around. "Don't expect anything from me. I can't give you the kind of marriage you're hoping for." Then she walked away, leaving Ethan sitting alone.

Even then, he didn't regret his decision, because he believed something simple: love could grow, trust could be built, feelings could change. He wasn't marrying Sophia because of money. He wasn't marrying her because of beauty. He simply believed that kindness and patience could build a family.

Now, standing beside her on their wedding day, he still believed that.

The wedding host smiled brightly. "Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom will now exchange rings."

The hall erupted in applause. Sophia walked toward Ethan, her face remaining expressionless. The priest handed Ethan a ring, and his hands trembled slightly as he slid it onto Sophia's finger.

Then it was Sophia's turn. She picked up the second ring. For a brief second, she hesitated.

Mrs. Lawson's voice came sharply from the front row. "Sophia."

Everyone turned toward her.

Mrs. Lawson forced a smile. "Don't keep everyone waiting."

Sophia lowered her eyes. Without another word, she placed the ring on Ethan's finger.

The priest smiled. "I now pronounce you husband and wife."

Thunderous applause echoed through the hall. Camera flashes filled the room. The guests celebrated. But neither the bride nor the groom looked happy.

As Ethan glanced toward the Lawson family, he noticed something: Mrs. Lawson wasn't smiling because of the marriage. She was smiling because the family had fulfilled an old obligation. To her, Ethan wasn't a son-in-law. He was simply the price of keeping a promise.

Ethan slowly looked at the ring on his finger. Then, in the silence of his heart, he made himself a promise.

"I may not have wealth today. I may not have status. But one day, I'll become a man Sophia can truly be proud of."

Little did he know that promise would lead him down a path filled with betrayal, humiliation, and trials that would change his life forever.

The wedding ceremony came to an end. One by one, guests walked onto the stage to congratulate the newlyweds. Some offered sincere smiles. Others whispered behind Ethan's back.

"So that's the orphan Mr. Lawson chose?"

"I still don't understand why."

"With the Lawson family's wealth, Sophia could have married into one of the city's richest families."

"What a waste."

Ethan heard every word, but he kept smiling politely as he thanked each guest. Sophia stood beside him, her expression calm and distant. They looked like strangers forced to stand side by side.

A few minutes later, the host announced that the banquet was about to begin. The guests moved toward the dining hall. Rows of luxurious tables were covered with delicious dishes, and soft music filled the air as waiters served expensive wine.

Ethan pulled out a chair for Sophia. She looked at him for a second before quietly sitting down.

"Thank you," she said. It was the first kind word she had spoken to him that day.

Ethan smiled. "You don't have to thank me."

Before either of them could continue the conversation, a loud voice interrupted.

"Sophia!"

A handsome young man in a tailored gray suit walked confidently toward their table. His expensive watch sparkled under the lights, and a confident smile rested on his face.

Sophia looked surprised. "Ryan?"

He laughed softly. "I came back from overseas this morning. I heard you were getting married. So I came to see if the rumors were true."

His eyes slowly shifted toward Ethan, and the smile on his face faded.

"So... he's the lucky man."

Sophia lowered her eyes. "Yes."

Ryan looked Ethan up and down without trying to hide his disappointment. "I honestly thought you'd marry someone worthy of you."

The atmosphere around the table became awkward. Before Ethan could respond, Mrs. Lawson walked over with a bright smile. "Ryan! It's been a long time."

Ryan greeted her politely. "Auntie."

Mrs. Lawson sighed dramatically. "If only you had returned a little earlier."

Ryan understood what she meant. He glanced at Ethan again. "What a pity."

Ethan quietly picked up his glass of water. He had no intention of arguing.

Ryan smiled faintly. "Well... congratulations anyway." His words sounded polite, but everyone could hear the sarcasm behind them.

After he walked away, Mrs. Lawson turned to Ethan. "Don't just sit there. The guests need more drinks."

Ethan blinked in surprise. "I'm... serving?"

Mrs. Lawson frowned. "Who else? The waiters are already busy. Besides, you're part of this family now. You should help."

Before Ethan could answer, Mr. Lawson spoke calmly. "Just do it."

Ethan looked at Sophia. For a brief moment, he hoped she would say something. Maybe she would tell her parents this wasn't right. Instead, Sophia quietly lowered her head. She said nothing.

A faint pain spread through Ethan's chest. "...Alright."

Without another word, he stood up and began carrying trays of drinks from one table to another. Some guests looked confused.

"Isn't he the groom?"

"Why is he serving us?"

Another guest laughed. "Maybe that's his real job."

Laughter spread across several tables. Ethan pretended not to hear it and continued serving each guest politely.

An elderly woman accepted a glass from him and smiled kindly. "Young man. You've worked hard today."

Ethan smiled back. "It's nothing."

She studied him for a moment, then quietly said, "Kindness is a rare thing. Don't lose it."

Those simple words warmed Ethan's heart. "Thank you."

As he turned to leave, someone deliberately stretched out a foot. Ethan stumbled. The tray slipped from his hands.

Crash!

Several glasses shattered across the marble floor. The music stopped. The entire hall turned to look.

Ryan slowly withdrew his foot and pretended to look surprised. "Oh. What happened?"

Mrs. Lawson hurried over, her face filled with anger. "Ethan! Can't you even carry a tray properly? So many important guests are watching!"

"I'm sorry," Ethan said sincerely. "It was an accident."

"Accident?" Mrs. Lawson pointed at the broken glass. "Do you know how expensive those glasses are? You embarrass this family wherever you go!"

Silence filled the hall. Many guests shook their heads.

"What an incompetent son-in-law."

"I feel sorry for Sophia."

Sophia slowly stood up. Everyone expected her to defend her husband. Instead, she spoke quietly. "Ethan... please be more careful."

Those words struck Ethan harder than Mrs. Lawson's shouting. He looked at her for a moment, then nodded. "...I will."

He bent down and began picking up the broken pieces of glass with his bare hands. No one came to help him. As he reached for another sharp piece, it sliced across his palm. A thin line of blood appeared. He looked at it silently, then continued cleaning.

Outside the banquet hall, dark clouds gathered above the city. A cold wind swept through the streets.

Far away, a black luxury sedan slowly drove past the Lawson Hotel. Inside the car sat an elderly man with silver hair. He looked out of the window toward the brightly lit wedding venue.

"Is this the Lawson family's wedding?"

The driver nodded. "Yes, Chairman."

The old man looked thoughtfully at the entrance before closing his eyes. "Let's go."

The sedan slowly disappeared into the night.

Neither Ethan, nor anyone inside the banquet hall, knew that fate had just passed them by — and that this chance encounter would one day change Ethan's life forever.
