Chapter 3: A Power Without Instructions

The Quiet Buyer didn't explain the mark.

"Not here," he said, and dropped three silver coins on the table. "Walk."

He led Zephyr through back streets to an abandoned dye works in the Salt Quarter. Three floors, rotting stairs, vats full of dried blue sludge. A healer was already waiting inside, an old woman who didn't speak. She set Zephyr's leg in ten minutes and tied it between two boards. It hurt so badly he almost bit through his tongue.

On a crate beside the cot sat six small brown bottles. Rowan's medicine.

"Stay here tonight," the buyer said. "Tomorrow, you bring me proof from that ruin. Then we talk about your chest."

He left. The healer left after him. Zephyr was alone.

He picked up the bottles and held them against his chest. Rowan was somewhere in Cassian's warehouses, and Zephyr was sitting here with the medicine and no way to deliver it.

*Fix that tomorrow. Tonight, figure out what's inside you.*

---

He sat on the cot and said, "Show me."

**[Name: Zephyr Kaelith]**

**[Physical Strength: 7]**

**[Soul Integrity: 63%]**

**[Unique Trait: Primordial Adaptation]**

**[Unidentified Authority: Sealed]**

The same words as before. Zephyr waited for more, but nothing came.

"Great. What does Primordial Adaptation do?"

Nothing.

"What's the energy in my chest?"

Nothing. The text just hung there.

Zephyr rubbed his face. The System was a mirror, not a teacher. It showed him numbers and refused to explain them.

He closed his eyes and focused on the cold weight behind his ribs. He tried to pull it toward his right hand, the way you'd drag a heavy sack across a floor.

It moved.

Cold flowed down his arm in a stream. His fingers went numb. Then something in his wrist tore, and a vein burst under the skin. Blood sprayed across the blanket.

Zephyr yelled and yanked his hand back. The energy snapped away. His wrist swelled fast, dark purple.

He sat there panting and clutching his arm.

**[Soul Integrity: 61%]**

Two percent lost, just for trying.

"Okay," he said through his teeth. "So I can't just force it."

He wrapped the wrist, then dumped out his pouch of old relics. Years of digging had given him a handful of junk: a cracked bone whistle, a bent bronze ring, two clay seals, and the corroded compass he'd tried to sell that morning.

The compass was spinning.

Zephyr stared at it. The needle whipped in circles, then stopped, pointing directly at his chest.

"Huh."

He picked it up. The bronze was cold and faintly vibrating. He thought about the energy in his chest again, but this time he didn't pull. He let it leak, a little at a time, toward the compass in his left hand.

The compass hummed. A thin ripple of light spread across his palm, like heat rising off a road. It shaped itself into a flat, shimmering disc about the size of his hand.

He picked up the bone whistle and tapped it against the disc.

*Tink.* The whistle bounced off.

A shield. A tiny, ugly one. But it worked.

The disc flickered and died after two seconds. A needle of pain stabbed through his skull, and his nose started bleeding.

**[Skill recorded: Ward (Crude). Proficiency: 1%.]**

Zephyr wiped his nose and almost laughed. The System hadn't taught him anything. It had just written down what he'd done after the fact.

"Fine," he said. "I'll teach myself."

He practiced it again and again until his hands shook. Each time was slightly easier. Each time cost him something, a headache, a nosebleed, a cold ache in his bones. The Ward lasted three seconds, then four.

He was still practicing when he heard the boots.

---

Zephyr froze.

Below him, the front door creaked. A floorboard groaned. Then another. Men were moving through the ground floor, trying to be quiet and failing.

He crept to the window and looked down. Four torches in the alley. Five men with swords. The tallest wore a gray coat with a stitched black hawk on the shoulder. Cassian's mark.

Garrick Thorne.

*How did they find me?*

He didn't have time to wonder. He grabbed the medicine bottles, shoved them in his jacket, and looked around the room. The only exit was the stairwell. Five men would reach it in about a minute.

A broken leg. A bleeding nose. A shield that lasted four seconds.

*You can't fight them.* He knew that. *But you can make them fight the building.*

He'd read this place when he came in. The stairs were old timber with rusted bolts. The corridor on the second floor was narrow, barely wide enough for one man. And the dye vats on the first floor were still half full of slick, dried sludge.

He hopped to the stairwell on one leg, then lowered himself down the stairs backward. Halfway to the second floor, he stopped at the landing and wedged the bone whistle under a loose bolt. He pried it free, then another. The middle three steps wobbled.

He heard Garrick's voice downstairs. "Top floor. He's got a broken leg. Go."

Zephyr scrambled back up to the third floor and pressed himself against the wall next to the door.

Boots hit the stairs. Two men first. They came up fast.

Their weight hit the middle steps.

*Crack.*

The whole section gave way. One man dropped through with a scream, and a second grabbed the rail and hung there, dangling. Below, someone shouted a curse.

"One at a time!" Garrick yelled. "Don't bunch up!"

The dangling man hauled himself over the gap and charged up the last flight. He burst through the door with his sword raised.

Zephyr was waiting. He raised his left hand.

*Ward.*

The shimmering disc snapped into place in front of him. The sword hit it with a sound like a bell, and the blade skidded sideways. The man stumbled forward, off balance.

Zephyr swung the broken tent pole as hard as he could. It cracked across the man's temple. He dropped.

The Ward vanished. A bolt of pain split Zephyr's head in half, and he almost fell with the man.

Two more men were already on the stairs, climbing around the broken section by balancing on the rail.

Zephyr didn't wait. He dragged himself to the far window, kicked out the rotten shutters, and looked down. A line of old dye cloth hung from a roof beam, thick wet fabric stretched between buildings.

He didn't think about it. He grabbed the cloth, swung out, and let go over the next rooftop.

He hit the tiles hard and rolled. Something in his leg shifted wrong. He bit down on his own arm to keep from screaming.

Behind him, the window filled with men. Someone shouted, "There! He's on the roof!"

Zephyr crawled. He found a drain pipe and slid down it, then dropped into a narrow alley on the far side. Behind him, boots pounded across tiles, but the alley split into three directions, and he picked the darkest.

---

He didn't stop until he was three streets away, curled behind a stack of rotting barrels, with his heart hammering and blood running from his nose.

He was alive. He had the medicine. He had one more thing too.

He pulled the bottles out and counted them. Six. Nothing broken.

A voice drifted from the end of the alley, weak and slurred. Zephyr crept to the corner and looked.

One of the men who had fallen through the stairs had dragged himself out the back door. He lay propped against a wall, clutching a ruined leg and groaning. Zephyr recognized his face. He'd been one of the five.

The man saw him and tried to laugh. It came out as a wet cough.

"Kaelith," he wheezed. "Thorne said you'd be easy."

Zephyr kept his distance. "Where's my brother?"

"Not telling you that." The man grinned through bloody teeth. His eyes were already going glassy. "But I'll tell you something else, runt. You think Cassian wants that relic because it's valuable?"

Zephyr said nothing.

"Fool." The man's head lolled. "He's not afraid of losing it. He's terrified of what happens when someone like you learns to use it."

His eyes rolled back. He slid sideways and lay still, breathing but gone.

Zephyr stood very quietly in the alley.

He had a hiding place that no longer existed. Medicine he couldn't deliver. A technique that cost him blood every time he used it.

And a new question, one that mattered more than all the others.

If Cassian was afraid of the relic, why did he want it so badly?
