The holographic message flickered in the rain, glowing a faint blue against the darkness.I looked back to see if I was the only one seeing the message but then no student was right behind me. As the torrent hit my body.

I simply stood still staring at the message. And suddenly the countdown began.

> [SYSTEM MESSAGE: BECOME THE ALMIGHTY GAMING AVATAR WITH A CLICK.]

> [YES] / [NO]

I stared at it, my breath uneven. The rain poured around me, but I didn’t feel cold. Instead, a strange warmth spread through my body, like an electric current surging through my veins.

Was this real?

I clenched my fists, feeling the wet fabric of my sleeves stick to my skin. My logical mind screamed that this was ridiculous. That I was exhausted, cold, and hallucinating. But another part of me—the part that had suffered endless humiliation at Felix’s hands—whispered that maybe, just maybe, this was real.

And what did I have to lose?

Nothing.

With a deep breath, I reached forward and pressed YES.

For a second, I held my breath, waiting for something—anything—to happen.

The screen blinked.

Then it disappeared.

I frowned, standing there like an idiot as the rain continued to pour. I stared at the empty space where the message had been, waiting for some kind of dramatic transformation. A surge of power. A second message. Something.

But nothing happened.

The warmth in my body faded, leaving me shivering. The rain suddenly felt colder, harsher. I let out a bitter chuckle.

Of course.

What had I expected? That I would suddenly gain superpowers? That the system would transform me into some kind of godlike gamer overnight?

I shook my head, my soaked hair sticking to my forehead. Stupid.

Dragging my aching leg, I limped home, water dripping from my clothes with every step.

I was too tired to make dinner. I opened the rusty little fridge I was having and stared inside.

All I had left was two pieces of ramen. A stark reminder of my poverty stage and the need for me to hussle more and get some money.

But I barely even have the time for my double shift. Kluas has encroached on my days. Bombarding me with tons of assignments and laundry activities. Sometimes, it is even scary to go to school but I know one thing, if I don't show up.

I was going to be at his mercy the following day.

I was freezing and exhausted. I peeled off my drenched clothes, tossed them into a pile, and collapsed onto my bed without even bothering to shower. My mind replayed the message over and over, but by the time sleep took me, I had convinced myself it was nothing more than my tired brain playing tricks on me.

[ THE NEXT-DAY]

Morning came too soon. Sometimes I wished it never did.

I woke up sore, my leg throbbing, my body stiff from the previous night’s misery. With a groan, I dragged myself out of bed and into the bathroom. The reflection staring back at me in the mirror looked terrible—dark circles under my eyes, messy hair, and an overall haunted expression.

But there was no time to dwell on it.

I had a long day ahead. I ran into the bathtub to have a warm bath and i was soon on my way to work or should I have said school. Don't blame me if I don't know the difference between both anymore.

Same routine, same misery.

Dragging myself through my morning classes, running errands for Felix, listening to Celine whine about her assignments. By now, my academic performance was slipping, and I could feel the weight of it pressing down on me.

I used to be a good student.

But Felix made sure that was no longer the case.

Between doing his work, handling his girlfriend’s assignments, and barely scraping through my own studies, I was drowning.

I was barely holding on.

And worst of all, nobody cared. No one cares about a limping boy who was running from pillar to post. I believe everyone was having their own problems to deal with or perhaps, I was merely invisible.

Felix’s influence was too strong. If I failed, if I lost my scholarship, it wouldn’t matter to anyone. They would all just laugh.

I clenched my fists.

I need to do something… before it’s too late. How do I get out of his form grips, I don't know.

I was limping toward the school gates when it happened.

A soft DING! echoed in my ears.

I froze, my eyes darted around to see if the ping was from someone close by but then, no one was around me. But then a blue screen materialized in front of me, just like the night before.

> [DING!]

> [THANK YOU FOR ACCEPTING THE GAMING AVATAR SYSTEM.]

> [GET READY FOR YOUR FIRST MISSION.]

My breath caught in my throat.

It was real.

The system… it was real.

Klaus’s POVThe campus never felt colder. Not because of the wind—it was sunny, almost mockingly warm—but because something inside me felt I was cheated and things were done wrongly. The weight that once crushed me now steadied me. Evelyn’s betrayal, Celine’s father’s slander, Felix’s smug victory—it had all bled out into one undeniable truth.Justice was dead. And I was done mourning.I didn’t go back to my dorm. I couldn’t. I didn’t go see Jordan or Ava either.Instead, I walked. Past the student garden. Past the sculpture of Chancellor Gregory that now looked more like a rotting monument than anything noble. The same place where I had walked up to her to ask her to be my date. That memory? Buried.I ended up at the North Annex—the part of the school where the elite clubs had their meetings. The future presidents. CEOs. Diplomats. Heirs. All of them shielded by legacy, money, and bloodlines. The same names on the target list.[System Activated: Facial Recognition Matching Target P

Klaus's POV It all felt like a bombshell that was dropped on me. “ What did you say?” I said, slowly looking into her eyes. “ After everything. I am doing this for you!” I shouted, staring at her eyes. “ I am doing this for us, and you are going to throw it away. For what?” I asked, still not understanding why Evelyn wanted to call it quits. “ Because if you can't win them, then you join them. Do you think you can win this? Felix already beat you flat. You need to admit that. Whatever it is that we shared, that we had is gone.” Evelyn said as she wheeled herself past me. The reporters flocked to her side, and only God knows what it was that she was talking to them about. I felt my body weaken, and even though I had the power of the system, it felt useless. • Chapter 25

Klaus’s pov I knew this was going to happen. I looked at the faces of the people seated and I knew all they wanted was to protect Felix. “ I know you are going to say this? If Felix didn't do it. Who did?” “Jerome did and he is dead.” The Dean said, looking at me. “ You have to let this go, Klaus. For your sake.” “ For my sake? You mean to tell me you know he crippled my girlfriend and I should sit back and do nothing about it?” I said in anger. As I barged out of the Dean's office, I could see some of the students waiting patiently at the door. Maybe they wanted to hear the truth about the school not supporting the weak or maybe they just wanted to confirm the fact that Felix was untouchable. I was losing the battle even before it started. It was only going to be a matter of time before Felix and Celine were released. “ I knew he couldn't win against the council.” “ He would have let it go.” “ Celine's father is a top notch official in the university grounds and not to mentio

Klaus’s POVThe tires screeched as I veered onto the main road, my heart beating fast, almost louder than the engine. My hands trembled around the wheel—not from fear, but from a volatile mix of rage, adrenaline, and something I hadn’t dared to feel in a long time.Hope.Jordan’s message blazed in my mind like a neon sign in the dark. There might actually be a way to find who drove the car.I didn’t know what he meant yet, didn’t know what magic or science or miracle he’d found—but I was going to find out.I slammed the brakes as I pulled up in front of Jordan’s off-campus apartment. I didn’t knock. I didn’t call. I charged up the stairs two steps at a time and kicked his door open.He was already standing in the middle of the room, phone in hand, eyes wide with panic.“Klaus—”“What did you find?” I snapped. “Tell me. Now.”Jordan blinked, then shoved a laptop toward me. “It wasn’t easy, okay? But I remembered something—back when we used to sneak onto the science building’s rooftop,

  • Chapter 23

Klaus's pov As I walked out of the hospital, I could hear her sob and her words of regret. I clenched my hands and decided to pay Felix a visit. I knew I was not going to win the fight but I was going to throw every damn punch in his way. As I opened the exit game driving back towards the university ground. My phone pinged and I saw it was a message from Jordan. I was too angry to look it up. Too pissed to check what he has sent to me. A part of me wished I had given Evelyn the portion to drink. It was just Jordan's fingers but she was going to be stuck on a wheel chair for the rest of my life. I prayed silently for a mission that comes with a magical healing potion yet again. As I drove into the school compound, I saw a lot of students staring at their phones. They were bickering among themselves like one of the students was dead. But the fact was that the news about the accident and Evelyn becoming a cripple had spread like wildfire. I wonder who was able to pass the news of

Klaus’s POVThe vase shattered against my temple before I even realized what was happening.Glass fragments exploded in a burst of pain, and a trickle of blood slid warm and slowed down the side of my face. I staggered back, one hand catching the edge of the doorway as the other instinctively went to the cut.I didn't care. A part of me felt apologetic. Maybe I deserved what she threw at me or not?I was not sure how I was supposed to feel "Evelyn?" My voice was rough, strained, full of disbelief. Her eyes—those same honey-brown eyes that used to soften at the sight of me—were wild now. Red-rimmed, swollen with tears and something worse. Betrayal.I stepped into the room despite Talia's attempt to block me. "Don't—" she started, but I pushed past her."You don't get to come in here now!" Evelyn screamed. Her voice was broken, cracked glass in the wind. "Where the hell have you been?"My jaw clenched. I looked at her—really looked at her. Pale. Fragile. Sunken cheeks and too-thin wr
