The air in the high-security chamber thrummed with quiet energy. Adrian Kane followed the warden down a narrow hall, his prison uniform already traded for a sharp black suit. The guards who had once looked at him with contempt now avoided his gaze, their silence a mark of respect.
At the end of the hall, a door slid open to reveal a conference room unlike any he had ever seen. The walls glowed with embedded holographic screens, maps shifting in real-time. A dozen high-ranking officials rose to their feet as one, saluting sharply.
At the head of the table stood President Aldric Rowe himself, silver-haired yet commanding, his eyes like steel. “General Kane,” the President said, his voice reverberating in the chamber. “Welcome back.”
Adrian straightened to his full height. “Sir.”
The holographic projectors flickered, displaying battlefields where Adrian’s strategies had turned certain defeat into victory. Campaign after campaign, victory after victory.
One of the officials spoke with reverence. “For years, you bore the world’s misunderstanding so we could operate in the shadows. Today, on behalf of the nation, we honor your sacrifice.”
The President stepped forward, removing a small box from the table. Inside gleamed five golden stars.
“Adrian Kane,” he declared, pinning them to Adrian’s chest, “you are hereby granted the rank of Five-Star General, the highest honor in our command. Few in history have ever worn this insignia.”
The room filled with solemn applause. Adrian inclined his head, though a flicker of weariness shadowed his face. For so long, he had dreamed of this moment, vindication, recognition.
And yet, a part of him thought of Elena, walking away, believing him nothing more than a criminal. The stars weighed heavier than chains.
The President dismissed the applause with a raised hand. “You’ve earned your rest. But I cannot allow you peace just yet. A storm brews, and only you can quell it.”
He gestured to the hologram. A sealed file appeared, its cover marked: Level Omega Clearance, Eyes Only.
Adrian accepted it, opening to the first page. A name stared back at him, a name tied to whispers of corruption, secret syndicates, and power struggles that threatened the entire nation.
His jaw tightened. “So this is my new target.”
“You will have unrestricted clearance,” the President said firmly. “Any resource you require, you command it. But discretion is vital. The world must never know this operation exists.”
Adrian closed the file, tucking it under his arm. His voice was low, resolute. “Understood.”
As the officials filed out, the chamber emptied until only Adrian and the President remained.
“Adrian,” the President said more quietly, his tone shedding its official edge, “this mission will test more than your strength. It will test your heart. Do not underestimate the ones closest to you.”
Adrian gave a sharp nod, though unease twisted inside him. The doors opened suddenly, breaking the solemnity. “Adriannnnn!”
A whirlwind of perfume and silk barreled into him, nearly knocking the file from his hands. Arms wrapped tightly around his neck, and the guards scrambled after her, faces red with panic. “Miss Raven! You can’t”
Adrian groaned, pressing a hand to his forehead as he gently pried her loose. “Lyra. What are you doing here?”
Lyra Raven, CEO of Raven Enterprises, heiress of one of the wealthiest families in the city, and daughter of his late subordinate, grinned up at him with unrepentant mischief. “What do you think? I heard you got divorced and released, so of course I came to pick you up!”
The guards apologized profusely, but Adrian waved them off. Lyra beamed, her fiery red dress shimmering under the lights. “You’re free now, Adrian. Finally, let's celebrate!” she insisted, looping her arm through his.
Adrian sighed, the corners of his mouth twitching despite himself. “Lyra, you never change.”
What he didn’t notice was the shadow lingering just outside the chamber doors, a figure who had come seeking answers of her own. Elena.
