The Garcia family arrived at the luxurious Emerald Hotel, drawing immediate attention the moment they stepped out of their cars. Cameras flashed. Guests whispered.

“Is that Ms. Jasmine Garcia? She’s even more stunning in person!” one woman gushed.

“And look who’s beside her—that’s Mr. Michael Montez of the Montez Group! They look perfect together!” another added.

Michael’s lips curved into a confident smile as he caught the murmurs from the crowd. This was his moment. Tonight, he was determined to make Jasmine his girlfriend—no, his future wife.

“Wow! This place is amazing, Jasmine!” James exclaimed, wide-eyed at the elegant ballroom filled with chandeliers and velvet drapes.

Ophelia, their mother, nodded with pride. “Of course, James. You’d better get used to events like this. Your sister’s a big success now.”

Michael, ever the charmer, leaned in slightly. “Don’t worry, Mrs. Garcia. After tonight, Jasmine will be even more successful,” he said with a polished smile.

Ophelia gasped, h

“This is ridiculous! If only we’d taken Granddad to another hospital earlier, we’d already have a doctor who can help him!” Sabrina exploded, still refusing to believe Carl could be of any use.“Right. Those insects will only make his condition worse. Cobra venom is especially dangerous!” the doctor chimed in.Sophia let out a sharp exhale. “Can you two just shut up?” she snapped. “How many times do I have to tell you we don’t have time? Unless you can magically heal him, don’t make a sound!”Sabrina huffed defiantly. She still couldn’t accept that her sister would trust a stranger. She shot Carl a hard look as he stood quietly, studying her grandfather.Well… she admitted to herself—he was handsome, even if she would never say it aloud. Sabrina rolled her eyes and tried to banish the thought.A few moments later there was a knock at the door. Jasmine entered, followed by several men carrying boxes.“Ms. Carson! We brought what you asked for,” Jasmine announced.Sophia sprang to her f

The doctors still couldn’t believe their eyes. A short while ago Samuel Carson had looked like a corpse—breathing, yes, but stiff and motionless—and now, just as Carl had warned, he’d vomited that black liquid. The medical team rushed to Samuel’s bedside and checked his vitals. The head doctor’s eyes went wide; his hands trembled as he read the monitors.“It’s true,” he stammered. “If we don’t treat Mr. Carson Sr. now, he’ll be dead within two hours! How—how did you know? How can a lowly bodyguard—”Sophia cut him off. Her face went hard; before anyone could stop her she stepped forward and slapped the doctor so hard his head turned.“How dare you belittle Mr. Donovan when you can’t even save my grandfather?” she snapped, fury shaking her voice. The doctor stood there, stunned, hand to cheek.Sabrina scoffed from the corner. “Maybe he just guessed,” she said, unbelieving. She still refused to accept that Carl might be right.Sophia ignored her and pivoted toward Carl, eyes full of des

With one look, Carl immediately knew the old man had been poisoned. From the black liquid Sabrina said he vomited, to the darkened veins running beneath his pale skin—everything pointed to a single conclusion. He knew the signs all too well. This wasn’t a normal toxin—certainly not one modern hospitals could easily detect.Sabrina frowned, confused and defensive. “Who even are you? How can you say my grandfather was poisoned?”Sophia took a deep breath. “He’s Carl Donovan. My personal bodyguard.”“A personal bodyguard?” one of the doctors repeated skeptically. “You’re not a doctor. On what grounds are you claiming Mr. Carson was poisoned?”Carl ignored the tone. He stepped closer to the bed and gently held the old man’s wrist, feeling his pulse. It was faint, erratic. The man’s breathing was shallow, his heartbeat fast—his body fighting a losing battle.“He’s showing all the symptoms,” Carl said quietly. “And if he vomits the black liquid again without treatment, he’ll be dead in two

Carl finally walked out of the hotel, the night air hitting his face like a silent reminder that the day was far from over. Strangely, despite the heated argument he’d just had with Jasmine, there was a faint smile tugging at his lips.He didn’t quite understand it—but for a fleeting moment, he’d seen it. The jealousy in her eyes. And that was enough for him to know: Jasmine still cared.“Carl!”He turned at the sound of his name. Sophia was standing beside a sleek black car, arms crossed, clearly waiting for him.He sighed, already feeling the headache coming. Still, he walked toward her.“Sophia. I thought you left already,” he said flatly.“Come with me. We need to talk.” Her tone wasn’t a request—it was an order.Carl frowned. “I can’t. I already told you—I’ve helped you enough. I have other things to do.”Sophia rolled her eyes dramatically. “Are you still mad? Look, I said I’m sorry! I’ll make it up to you, okay? Just come with me. I have a proposal.”Carl let out another long s

They were already in the hotel lobby when Carl suddenly stopped walking, a thought striking him. Sophia halted too and looked at him curiously.“Why? What’s wrong?” she asked.“Didn’t you tell me you invited someone who has the same necklace as mine?” Carl’s tone was calm, but his eyes were sharp.Sophia paused, then laughed awkwardly. “Oh, that.” She grinned mischievously. “Sorry. I lied.”Carl’s brows shot up. “What?”Sophia rolled her eyes playfully. “Come on, Carl. You wouldn’t have come with me if I told you the truth. I’m sorry, okay? I’ll make it up to you.”Carl exhaled heavily. Deep down, he wasn’t surprised. Maybe he should’ve known better than to believe her story so easily.Sophia touched his arm gently. “Look, I’m sorry. I know that necklace means something to you. But I had my reasons.”“This isn’t something to joke about, Sophia,” Carl said firmly. “That necklace is important to me.”He tried not to show it, but disappointment settled in his chest. It wasn’t anger—just

Why would she call me?! Carl felt irritation flare up. He’d come to the banquet thinking he’d find someone who wore the same necklace. He hadn’t expected to be put onstage, exposed in front of a roomful of people.Still, he couldn’t let Sophia be embarrassed. Reluctantly, he rose and walked to the front.“Thank you, Carl.” Sophia looped her arm through his with practiced ease.Jasmine’s mouth dropped open. Her hands curled into fists at her sides — fury coiled in every knuckle.“Who is that?” someone whispered near them.“I heard Ms. Carson has a new boyfriend. Maybe that’s him?” another guessed.Michael sneered. “Boyfriend? More like a boy toy. That man has nothing.”Ophelia tutted. “Right. He’s a gold digger. Got paid by my daughter and now he goes for Ms. Carson? Poor woman.”A guest nearby gasped. “Really? What kind of man clings to a woman like that?”Michael’s grin widened. To him, the whispering crowd simply confirmed a truth he wanted everyone to believe: Carl was a hanger-on
