Ruby knocked twice before opening the office door. It was in the afternoon, almost the closing hour.

Benjamin looked up from the documents in front of him.

"The representatives from Puntuale Logistics are here," she said. "The vice president, legal head, and CFO are already waiting with them in the conference room."

Benjamin closed the folder.

"Okay."

Ruby stepped aside.

He walked out without taking anything from the desk.

The boardroom sat at the far end of the executive floor. Through the gla

Benjamin sat at the head of the conference table in his office, a folder open in front of him.Across from him were Elio Celsco, Valmont's CFO, Francesca Kosmo, the Group Chief Accountant, and Lauro De Santis, a senior accounts officer responsible for project accounting and capital expenditure monitoring. The meeting had started shortly after nine.Elio rested his tablet on the table.“We'll begin with the three construction projects that need financial review this morning. Two retail outlets outside Rome, the Milan hotel and the logistics expansion in Florence.”Benjamin nodded.“Start with retail.”Francesca opened the first report.“The Naples outlet is the one requiring attention. Bologna is performing within its approved budget.”Benjamin looked at the figures.“How far is Naples from completion?”“Approximately forty-six percent,” Lauro answered. “The contractor's latest valuation puts physical progress at forty-six point three percent. Julia sat down and opened one of the documents on her system. She had barely read the first page when there was a knock on the door. She looked up.“Come in.”The door opened, and Alonzo Nico stepped inside.Julia immediately recognized him. They had already met during the final stages of her recruitment, though their interaction had been brief.“Good morning, Mr. Nico.”“Good morning, Ms. Carlisle.”He closed the door behind him.“Please, call me Alonzo,” he said.Julia smiled. “Then you can call me Julia.”“Fair enough.”He took the seat opposite her desk, carrying a slim folder and a tablet.“I thought we could start with the handover.”“That would be good,” Julia said. “I went through some of the general information HR provided, but I would rather hear from you directly about how things actually operate.”“That is probably the better approach,” Alonzo replied. “Documents can tell you what a company is supposed to do. They don't always tell you how things actually get done.”Julia

Diletta Lombardi led Julia to the door after the MD’s door. Julia's eyes immediately went to the nameplate.Chief Operating Officer. For a moment, she simply looked at it.She had known she was coming to Valmont Group as the new COO. She had signed the necessary documents and prepared herself for the responsibility. But seeing those three words on the door made everything feel real.Diletta opened the door."This is your office," she said. "I hope you like it."Julia stepped inside. Her attention immediately went to the desk.It was large without being overwhelming, finished in dark walnut with clean, modern lines. Two wide monitors sat neatly on the desk, one positioned directly in front of the executive chair and the other angled slightly to the side. A slim keyboard and wireless mouse rested in front of them. There was also a modern desk phone, a tablet dock, a charging station and a small digital display.Everything was neatly arranged.Julia smiled."Of course. This is beautiful

He says it's regarding the letter you sent requesting a meeting.”Benjamin looked up from the document he had been reading.“Thank you, Ruby, I'll take the call.”Ruby nodded and stepped back outside.Benjamin reached out and picked up the desk phone receiver.“Good morning.”“Good morning, Mr. Volkov. This is Marco Bellandi, President of Municipio XI.”“Good morning, President Bellandi.”“Thank you for taking my call. We received your letter regarding your interest in supporting a community project in Corviale.”Benjamin settled back in his chair.“Yes. I was hoping we could discuss it properly in person.”“I have read the letter myself,” Bellandi replied. “I must tell you, Mr. Volkov, I was very pleased to receive it. We receive many requests from organizations and private individuals, but it is not every day that someone approaches

In the evening of Sunday September second, Benjamin and Desmond attended the gala night for their college set.It was only the second time they had attended since graduation. They only started the year before. The venue was a large hotel ballroom in Rome, dressed for the occasion with round tables, soft lighting, a small stage and a dance floor that had already attracted a crowd by the time they arrived.Desmond looked around as they walked inside."Same people. Different clothes."Benjamin laughed. "And probably different bank balances.""Speak for yourself."They both laughed again. The evening started normally enough. They greeted former classmates, exchanged handshakes and caught up with people they had not seen in years. But Benjamin began noticing something that he had also noticed the last time they attended.People remembered him now.Not just his name. They remembered his face, his achievements and, apparently, his bank account. Some of the people who barely acknowledged him

It was the second week of August when Desmond walked into Benjamin's office carrying a thin folder with him.Benjamin looked up from his computer."Morning.""Morning."Desmond closed the door behind him and walked toward the desk."I have an update on the COO."Benjamin leaned back."Finally.""We found one."Benjamin's expression became more attentive."Who?""Julia Carlisle."Benjamin nodded."How did she do?""She topped everyone.""By much?""Quite a bit."Desmond placed the folder on the desk and opened it."We shortlisted several candidates for the final stage. She performed better than all of them during the interviews. Her experience was stronger, her answers were more detailed, and she handled the strategic questions particularly well."Benjamin glanced at the documents."How much experience?""Six years of experience at senior management level."Benjamin looked up."Six?""Yes. She has an MBA as well."Benjamin nodded."That's substantial.""It is. She was also the most exp
