The heavy oak door of the boardroom slammed open behind them as three additional armed operatives rushed into the suite, raising their weapons toward Caleb and Maya.

"Drop your gear!" the lead guard bellowed, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Caleb didn't drop anything. Instead of surrendering or reaching for his weapon, he dropped flat onto the polished carpet, sweeping his leg in a hard, circular arc. His boot caught the nearest guard behind the knee, sending the man crashing heavily onto the glass-strewn floor with a sharp yelp.

Maya moved in tandem, using the momentum of the falling guard to dive behind the heavy mahogany conference table, dragging the metal folding chair with her to block incoming fire.

Two rounds chipped the edge of the mahogany table, spraying splinters across the carpet.

Julian Vance didn't flinch. He stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the chaotic scene with an icy detachment, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt as if he were observing a minor scheduling inconvenience.

"You're out of time, Caleb," Julian said smoothly over the noise of the scuffle. "The federal marshals are already five minutes out. Even if you manage to crawl out of this building, your face is plastered on every law enforcement database in the tristate area."

Caleb scrambled to his feet, keeping low behind the heavy marble pillar near the projector screen. He glanced across the room toward Chloe. Her eyes met his, filled with a mixture of fear and silent warning. She gave her head a tiny, imperceptible shake—not telling him to give up, but signaling toward the floor beneath her chair.

Caleb followed her gaze. Tucked neatly under the edge of the desk near her bound feet was a small, discarded maintenance key fob—the master override for the executive suite’s secondary security grid.

Julian hadn't just used Chloe as bait; he had left her close enough to the manual bypass terminal to give Caleb a tactical opening if he was smart enough to look.

"You think a federal warrant is going to stop me from taking back what you stole?" Caleb called out, his voice echoing sharply across the boardroom.

"It won't stop you," Julian replied, taking a slow step toward the door where his remaining guards were regrouping. "It will just ensure that the people who hunt you down wear badges instead of corporate suits."

Julian turned on his heel and strode out of the boardroom, signaling for the remaining guards to cover the exit.

"Don't let him leave!" Maya yelled, leaning out from behind the table and firing a warning shot that forced the guards to duck back into the hallway.

"Let him go," Caleb said sharply, sprinting across the room toward Chloe's chair before the security team could re-engage.

"Caleb!" Maya shouted, covering his flank as she kept her pistol trained on the doorway. "If he walks out of this tower, we lose our only leverage!"

"We didn't lose anything," Caleb muttered, dropping to his knees beside his sister.

He pulled a tactical pocket knife from his belt and sliced through the heavy zip-ties binding Chloe's wrists, then quickly ripped the duct tape from her mouth.

Chloe gasped, taking in a sharp breath as she rubbed her chafed skin. "Caleb... they've been monitoring your burner phone since the moment you plugged it into the terminal downstairs. Julian knew you were coming before you even crossed the bridge."

"I know," Caleb said, helping her to her feet. He reached down and scooped up the small override key fob she had pointed out. "And Julian thinks he just backed me into a corner with a fake federal indictment."

"It's not just a fake indictment," Chloe whispered urgently, pulling a small, encrypted micro-drive from the pocket of her jacket and pressing it into Caleb's palm. "When they locked me in the auxiliary office upstairs, I managed to tap into the terminal on Julian's personal desk. That warrant isn't just targeting you, Caleb. It's an automated asset-seizure order for every offshore shell account Julian opened under Vanguard's name over the past five years."

Maya stared at Chloe, then back at Caleb, her expression shifting from panic to stunned realization. "Wait... you mean..."

"Julian didn't frame me to take the fall for his embezzlement," Caleb said, a cold, sharp edge cutting through his voice as he pocketed the drive. "He tried to frame me because he was running out of time to liquidate the accounts himself. By issuing a federal warrant in my name, he triggered an automatic asset freeze that locks the stolen funds in federal receivership—keeping them out of my hands permanently."

Before Maya could reply, the entire boardroom floor shuddered violently.

A sharp, high-pitched alarm began wailing through the ceiling vents, followed by an automated robotic voice echoing over the building's public address system.

Warning. Facility lockdown initiated. All primary elevators and exits offline.

Maya ran to the shattered glass wall, looking down toward the street below.

A fleet of black tactical vehicles with flashing red and blue lights was swarming the entrance of Vanguard Tower, sealing off every exit into the financial district.

"The federal marshals," Maya said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she turned back to face them. "Julian didn't just walk out of the room to escape. He called them in early."

Caleb didn't hesitate. He grabbed the submachine gun, checked the remaining rounds in the magazine, and motioned toward the private executive stairwell hidden behind Julian's primary desk.

"If the front lobby is locked down, we take the vertical maintenance shaft," Caleb said, his eyes fixed on the heavy steel fire door at the end of the hall.

"Where are we going?" Chloe asked, staying close to her brother's side as she grabbed a heavy jacket from the coat rack.

"Not out of the city," Caleb replied, his grip tightening around the weapon as the sound of heavy boots echoed up the stairwell from the floors below. "We're going to the server room on the roof. If Julian wants to play federal games, we're going to broadcast every single transaction he made straight to the SEC before those marshals reach this floor."
