The elevator chime pinged softly, a single metallic note that cut through the low rumble of the lift's hydraulic pistons.

Before the heavy doors fully parted, the sharp crack of a suppressed pistol echoed through the shaft. A heavy lead round sparked off the reinforced steel wall right beside Caleb's shoulder, showering his jacket with hot fragments of metal paint.

Caleb didn't hesitate. He grabbed Maya by the collar and hauled her down low as the elevator doors slid open to reveal the dim, mahogany-paneled reception area of the executive suite.

Two armed guards in tailored suits were already kneeling behind the marble front desk, sweeping their rifle barrels toward the elevator opening.

"They're waiting for the box," Maya whispered, sliding her hand into her coat to grip the handle of her spare pistol. "The moment the doors open wide, they're going to fill the car."

Caleb pulled the submachine gun off his shoulder, flicked the selector switch to burst fire, and didn't wait for them to finish reloading. He kicked the sliding door fully open with his boot, drawing the immediate fire of both guards.

Bullets chewed into the top of the elevator frame, raining plaster down on the floor.

Caleb leaned around the edge of the door frame and fired a controlled three-round burst low. The shots shattered the marble base of the reception desk, sending heavy stone fragments flying and forcing the guards to duck.

"Now!" Caleb yelled.

Maya sprang out of the elevator to the left, firing two quick shots into the drywall above the guards' heads to pin them down, while Caleb vaulted over the low marble partition from the right.

Before the guards could recover their aim, Caleb slammed the heavy stock of his submachine gun into the nearest guard's temple. The man collapsed instantly, sliding unconscious against the polished floor. The second guard tried to swing his rifle around, but Maya kicked the barrel upward, sending his weapon clattering across the slick surface before slamming the butt of her pistol into his jaw.

Both guards hit the floor within seconds.

Caleb didn't slow down. He stepped over the fallen men, his eyes fixed on the double glass doors at the far end of the hallway—the entrance to Julian Vance's private boardroom.

"Caleb, wait," Maya panted, jogging to keep pace as she reloaded her magazine. "The thermal sensors on the hallway ceiling. Julian knows we're on this floor."

"Let him know," Caleb said coldly, walking straight toward the double doors.

He didn't bother trying the handle. He raised his boot and kicked the reinforced glass center with full force. The laminated glass shattered with a deafening crash, splintering inward across the plush carpet of the executive boardroom.

The room was vast, dominated by a long mahogany table that stretched toward a floor-to-ceiling glass wall overlooking the rain-soaked skyline of the financial district.

Julian Vance sat calmly at the head of the table, sipping a glass of scotch as if he were waiting for a routine business partner rather than an armed intruder. To his right, two more private security operatives held position, their weapons raised.

And tied securely to a chair near the projector screen was Chloe, her eyes wide with shock and terror as she looked at her brother standing in the shattered doorway.

"Caleb," Julian said, setting his glass down with a precise, quiet click. A thin, amused smile touched the corners of his mouth. "I must admit, I didn't think you had the stomach to walk right back into the lion's den. You always were overly protective of your little sister."

"Let her go, Julian," Caleb said, his voice dropping into a flat, dangerous register as he kept his submachine gun leveled at the center of the room. "The fifty million is out of your accounts. The merger is dead. Keeping her won't save your company."

Julian leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his fingers over his stomach.

"Save the company?" Julian let out a low, smooth laugh. "Caleb, you still think this is about a corporate merger. You spent three years locked away studying ledgers, and you still don't understand how the game is played."

Julian gestured with two fingers toward the large digital projector screen mounted on the wall behind him.

The screen flickered, shifting from the live video feed to display a different document—a classified federal indictment document bearing a federal judge's digital signature, dated earlier that afternoon.

Caleb’s eyes scanned the text. His breath caught in his throat.

It wasn't an indictment against Julian Vance.

It was an arrest warrant for corporate espionage, money laundering, and treason—issued entirely in *Caleb's* name, signed off by federal prosecutors using the digital security credentials stolen from Caleb's old audit desk.

"You didn't just break into my network tonight, Caleb," Julian said, his voice dripping with mock sympathy. "You validated every single transaction I needed to pin the entire Vanguard embezzlement scandal squarely on your shoulders. The moment you transferred that money into an un-traceable escrow account under your personal digital signature, you legally confessed to the crime."

Maya stared at the screen, her face draining of all color. "No... that's impossible. We routed it through the offshore clearinghouse..."

"You routed it exactly where my algorithms told you to," Julian replied smoothly, standing up from his chair and buttoning his suit jacket. "By midnight, the federal authorities aren't going to raid my office, Caleb. They're going to raid whatever hole you're hiding in—and you'll spend the rest of your life behind bars for a crime you didn't even fully commit."

Julian turned his gaze toward the two armed guards standing beside the table.

"Take the weapon from him," Julian ordered softly. "And bring me the burner phone."
