The Ghost of Vance

The blinding glare of the patrol boat's searchlight pinned Caleb, Maya, and Chloe against the wet wooden railings of the fuel dock.

Behind Marcus Vance, three heavily armed operatives on the upper deck raised their tactical rifles, their red laser targeting sights swaying through the fog and rain to lock onto Caleb's chest.

"You died two years ago in the Alps," Caleb said, his voice carrying over the slap of harbor waves against the wooden pilings. He didn't lower his submachine gun, though the odds were completely stacked against them. "The plane crash was faked."

"It was an exit strategy," Marcus replied, taking a slow step along the gunwale of the idling motor launch. Rain glinted off his tailored coat. "The board was growing paranoid. Federal regulators were circling Vanguard's primary investment pools. So I let Julian play CEO while I stepped into the dark to build something larger."

Marcus pointed toward the black patrol vessel looming in the harbor mist.

"Julian thought he was clever using you to take the fall for fifty million dollars," Marcus continued, a thin, patronizing smile touching his lips. "He didn't realize that the backdoor ledger you coded wasn't just tracking Vanguard's local funds. It was routing every shadow asset across twenty-four European subsidiaries directly into the Zurich trust."

Maya shifted her weight on the slick wooden planks, her pistol leveled low toward the patrol boat's pilot house. "And now you want the physical token to claim total control."

"The token isn't just a key," Chloe whispered tightly beside Caleb, her hand buried deep in her coat pocket, her fingers tight around the small metal drive. "It's a hardware hard-lock. Without it, the Swiss trust automatically liquidates its holdings and returns them to the original institutional investors."

Marcus’s eyes drifted toward Chloe. The polite tone evaporated from his voice, replaced by cold authority.

"Hand over the drive, Caleb," Marcus commanded. "Julian was a amateur who panicked the moment the marshals hit the tower. I am not Julian. I have fifty mercenaries surrounding this harbor, and the local port authority is on my payroll. You have five seconds before my team opens fire."

Caleb looked at Marcus, then down at the dark, churning water between the dock pilings and the patrol boat's hull.

The tide was rising fast, flooding the lower service intake pipes beneath the pier deck.

"You made one mistake when you let Julian handle the local logistics, Marcus," Caleb said, his voice flat and unnervingly calm.

Marcus narrowed his eyes slightly. "What mistake?"

"You assumed I built that ledger system to protect Vanguard's money," Caleb said.

Before Marcus could answer, Caleb reached into his tactical vest with his left hand and pulled out the small, rusted iron bolt he had kept since breaking out of the black site cell. He didn't drop it. He slammed it hard into the exposed electrical relay box mounted on the pier lamp right beside his shoulder.

A massive blue electrical arc detonated with a sharp, deafening crack.

The high-voltage surge shorted the pier's main breaker box, sending a blind surge of power roaring through the underwater conduit line running along the dock pilings.

The patrol boat's high-intensity searchlight exploded in a shower of hot white sparks, plunging the entire fuel dock into absolute darkness.

"Fire!" Marcus roared over the sudden chaos.

Muzzle flashes strobed through the rain and fog as the mercenaries on the patrol boat opened fire blindly into the night. Bullets chewed through the heavy wooden dock railings, sending splinters and metal fragments flying into the air.

"Down!" Caleb barked, shoving Chloe behind a massive iron winch housing before spinning around to fire a full magazine burst into the patrol boat's wheelhouse.

The rapid counterfire shattered the vessel's front glass, forcing the pilot to cut the throttle as glass and metal debris rained across the deck.

Maya didn't waste the distraction. She stepped around the winch, firing three precise shots at the patrol boat's auxiliary fuel lines mounted on the stern.

A jet of pressurized diesel ignited from the hot engine exhaust, bursting into a bright wall of yellow flame that swept across the deck of the patrol vessel and forced the mercenaries to scramble backward.

"The service tunnel! Go!" Caleb ordered, grabbing Chloe's arm and hauling her toward the narrow metal ladder leading down into the dark intake shaft beneath the dock.

"Caleb, the boat!" Chloe yelled over the roar of the flames and the engine noise.

Marcus Vance was already leaping from the burning launch onto the wooden planks of the dock, pulling a sleek, silenced pistol from inside his wool coat.

"You aren't leaving this harbor alive, Caleb!" Marcus shouted, his face illuminated by the flickering yellow flames of the burning patrol boat as he brought his weapon up.

Caleb turned, standing at the top of the ladder to cover his sister's descent. He leveled his submachine gun directly at Marcus.

Click.

The hammer fell on an empty chamber. The magazine was dry.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.

The suppressed shot cracked through the rain. Caleb felt a white-hot iron spike slice through his left shoulder, the force of the impact spinning him backward off the wet wooden platform.

He tumbled off the edge of the pier, falling into the black, freezing harbor water below.
