Cold Water

The freezing harbor water slammed into Caleb like a concrete wall, knocking the remaining air from his lungs.

Salt stinging his eyes, he fought his way toward the surface, his left shoulder burning with a white-hot agony where Marcus Vance’s bullet had hit. Heavy waves churned above him, illuminated by the burning stern of the patrol boat.

A burst of automatic fire ripped through the water inches from his face, sending air bubbles streaking past his vision.

Caleb kicked hard, staying beneath the thick wooden pilings of the fuel dock. He reached up with his right hand, hooking his fingers into the slimy, weed-covered crossbeam beneath the pier to keep from being swept out into the deep channel by the tide.

Above his head, heavy boots stomped across the wooden planks.

"Find him!" Marcus Vance’s voice barked through the storm, cold and sharp. "He was hit! He won't make it across the harbor in this current!"

Caleb pulled himself up slightly, his chin breaking the water behind a massive concrete support pillar. Through the narrow gap between the wooden planks, he saw Marcus standing at the edge of the dock, his silenced pistol lowered, flanked by two mercs in gray combat gear.

"Sir, the police sirens are two minutes out," one of the mercenaries reported, looking toward the perimeter fence. "The explosion at Pier 42 drew local law enforcement."

Marcus didn't turn around. His eyes scanned the dark water. "Search the shoreline. If he survives the jump, he won't get far without medical help."

"What about the girl?" the merc asked.

"She doesn't have the master key," Marcus said, stepping back toward the service van parked near the gate. "Caleb took it into the water with him. Find his body."

Caleb held his breath and submerged himself again as a spotlight swept across the pilings. He swam along the underside of the pier, using the heavy timber supports to block his silhouette until he reached the shallow mudflats near the abandoned drain outflow fifty yards down the coast.

He dragged himself out of the black water, coughing up salt spray as he collapsed onto the muddy embankment beneath a rusted drain pipe.

His left arm hung numb at his side, blood soaking through the dark jacket. He reached into his inner breast pocket with his right hand.

His fingers touched the smooth, cold surface of the Swiss security drive.

It was still there. Sealed, intact, and safe.

Footsteps splashed through the shallow mud above the embankment.

Caleb pressed his back against the slimy corrugated iron of the drain pipe, pulling his tactical knife from his belt. His submachine gun was at the bottom of the bay, leaving him with four inches of steel and a arm he could barely lift.

"Caleb!" a low voice hissed from the darkness above.

A figure scrambled down the muddy slope, slipping on the wet rocks before dropping onto the pipe ledge beside him.

It was Maya.

She was covered in soot, her face pale, but her sidearm was drawn and ready. "I saw you fall," she whispered, her breathing ragged as she crouched beside him. "Where's Chloe?"

"She made it into the drainage shaft before Marcus reached the ladder," Caleb said, his voice raw as he leaned against the metal wall. "Did they follow you?"

"No. Marcus pulled his men back the second the municipal sirens hit the harbor gate," Maya said, her eyes dropping to his blood-soaked shoulder. "You're shot."

"It went through," Caleb grunted, jaw clenching as he nudged his jacket back to inspect the wound. "Clean entry, missed the bone. I need a tourniquet."

Maya immediately unbuckled the nylon strap from her tactical holster and wrapped it tightly around his upper arm, pulling it taut. Caleb swallowed a groan, sweat mixing with the rainwater on his face.

"Marcus isn't running," Caleb said, looking toward the harbor road where the flashing lights of police cruisers were beginning to circle the perimeter fence. "He wanted me dead, but he couldn't risk staying when the city police showed up."

"He thinks you drowned," Maya said, handing him a fresh nine-millimeter magazine she had salvaged. "Which means we have a window before he realizes the security drive didn't sink with you."

"Chloe has the laptop," Caleb said, pushing himself up off the muddy wall using his good arm. "Where is she?"

"She's waiting at the secondary rendezvous point—an old boat repair shed two miles down the canal," Maya replied, supporting his right side as they navigated the slippery embankment toward the road. "She’s already trying to run the physical token through a local proxy."

They reached the top of the embankment, slipping through a tear in the chain-link fence onto a quiet, unlit industrial street lined with shuttered warehouses.

A battered commercial delivery van sat idling near the corner, its headlights killed.

The driver's door opened, and Chloe leaned out, waving them over frantically. "Get in! The police are setting up roadblocks along the harbor exit!"

Caleb climbed into the back cargo area, collapsing against a stack of folded moving blankets while Maya pulled the sliding door shut behind them. Chloe slammed her foot on the gas, the van surging forward into the rain.

Caleb pulled the metal Swiss drive from his pocket and set it on the small workbench beside Chloe's laptop.

"The hardware token survived the salt water," Caleb said, wiping the casing dry with his sleeve. "Can you link it to the Zurich proxy without alerting Marcus's network?"

Chloe plugged the drive into the side interface port, her fingers moving rapidly across the keys as lines of secure code populated the screen.

The screen flashed green, a complex routing tree unfolding across the display.

"It worked," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide as she read the encrypted header text. "The token bypassed the Swiss trust's primary firewall. But Caleb... this isn't just an investment pool."

Caleb leaned forward, ignoring the throbbing pain in his shoulder. "What is it?"

Chloe scrolled down the master account directory, revealing a list of over fifty corporate names, high-ranking political figures, and international financial institutions.

"Vanguard Capital wasn't just laundering money for Marcus," Chloe said, turning the laptop screen toward him. "It was an international clearinghouse for a syndicate called the Iron Consortium. Marcus isn't the owner, Caleb. He's just their chief financial officer."

Before Caleb could answer, the laptop speaker chimed.

A new file, locked behind an active satellite link, automatically opened on the screen. It displayed a live GPS tracker showing a private cargo jet idling on the runway of a private airfield fifteen miles north of the city.

Beside the flight plan was an automated dispatch order bearing Marcus Vance's digital signature, scheduled for takeoff in forty minutes.

"He's leaving the country," Maya said, leaning over the driver's seat. "If that plane takes off, we lose Marcus and the rest of the Consortium's routing logs."

Caleb looked at the flashing GPS icon on the map, then down at the small pistol in his hand.

"He's not taking off," Caleb said.
