The deafening roar of the transport helicopter's rotor blades rattled the thin wooden frame of the boathouse, showering the dock with splintered roof tiles and dust.

Brilliant white searchlights cut through the wall slats, pinning Caleb, Evelyn, Maya, and Chloe against the water.

"Drop your weapons!" the loudspeaker boomed again, closer this time. "You have five seconds before we breach!"

Maya held her sidearm low, her eyes scanning the dark beams overhead. "Caleb, there's a fast-roping team deploying onto the roof. We can't shoot our way out through the front doors."

"We aren't going through the doors," Caleb said, his voice deadly calm over the thrumming air pressure. He turned to his mother. "Evelyn, start the launch engine."

Evelyn didn't ask questions. She stepped into the wooden motor launch, reached beneath the instrument panel, and flipped two heavy brass battery switches. The old marine V8 engine coughed once, spewing a cloud of dark exhaust, then roared to life with a deep, vibrating rumble.

Chloe scrambled onto the stern bench, clutching her laptop case and the blue core module. "Caleb, the lake exit is locked from the outside! The underwater iron grate is down!"

Caleb pulled the oilskin packet he had retrieved from the workbench. Inside was a small, heavy iron crank handle.

He didn't run for the main door. He sprinted to the far corner of the slip where a rusted manual winch assembly was bolted into the concrete foundation.

Heavy boots slammed onto the boathouse roof above. A tactical breach charge clicked against the double front doors.

"Three seconds!" Maya warned, stepping onto the launch's bow deck and aiming her pistol toward the roof entry hatch.

Caleb jammed the iron crank handle into the winch gear and threw his full weight against it. The rusted iron teeth screeched as he forced the gears to turn, his injured left shoulder screaming with sharp, fiery pain. He ignored the burning sensation, digging his boots into the wet concrete and cranking with everything he had.

Twenty feet out in the dark slip, the heavy iron gate blocking the lake exit began to rise slowly, churning up mud and bubbles from the lake bed.

"Breach!" Maya yelled.

The boathouse doors exploded inward in a shower of wood splinters and smoke. Two Helios contractors in gray tactical gear dropped through the shattered roof hatch, their rifles coming up to sweep the boat slip.

Caleb slammed the winch locking pin into place, leaving the underwater gate half-open, and leaped off the concrete dock into the launch's passenger bay just as a stream of automatic fire chewed through the wooden dock planks behind him.

"Go!" Caleb shouted.

Evelyn slammed the brass throttle lever all the way forward.

The launch's heavy propeller dug into the water, throwing up a massive roostertail of white spray. The wooden vessel surged forward like a missile, its bow lifting as it shot down the narrow interior slip toward the half-open iron gate.

"Duck!" Maya barked, pulling Chloe flat against the deck floor.

The top of the wooden windshield scraped against the bottom edge of the iron gate with a deafening metallic screech, shearing off the searchlight and cabin canopy as the launch squeezed through the narrow gap.

An instant later, the boat burst out of the boathouse into the open, pitch-black waters of Lake Geneva.

Behind them, the searchlight from the Helios helicopter swept across the churning water, but the launch was already cutting through the thick lake fog at forty knots, staying low against the dark shoreline.

"Is everyone alive?" Caleb panted, leaning against the gunwale as he checked his shoulder dressing. Fresh red blood was soaking through the gauze, but the arm was still functional.

"We're intact," Maya said, crawling back up to the passenger seat and keeping her sidearm pointed toward their wake. "The helicopter is turning back toward the city. They think we're heading for the international water line toward France."

"We aren't going to France," Caleb said, looking at the glowing GPS map on Chloe's laptop screen. "Chloe, what's our distance to the Banque Nationale intake pipe?"

Chloe wiped spray from her laptop display, her fingers moving rapidly across the keys. "One point two miles south. The intake pipe sits forty feet below the surface near the old city quay."

Evelyn throttled the V8 engine down, letting the launch glide silently into the shadow of a dark stone breakwater bordering the city's waterfront district. The distant lights of Geneva reflected across the quiet water, shimmering against the stone facade of the high-rise financial buildings lining the shore.

"Dominic Vance's beacon is still active inside the blue core module," Evelyn reminded them, holding the glowing drive in her lap. "The moment his team resets their satellite tracking, they'll know we stayed inside the bay."

Caleb reached out and took the blue module from his mother. He looked at the heavy brass pocket watch he had carried since Ohio, then at the blue core.

"He wants the core," Caleb said.

He pulled a small tactical roll of waterproof sealant from Maya's kit, wrapped the blue core module tightly inside it, and attached it to the launch's automatic bilge pump housing. He set the pump's mechanical timer for fifteen minutes, then pushed the wooden launch back out into the open current with the engine idling at low speed toward the deep channel.

"Where is the boat going?" Chloe asked.

"It's taking Dominic's beacon three miles out into the deep lake," Caleb said. "By the time his strike team intercepts the launch, the core will drop to the bottom of the bay."

Maya looked down into the dark, freezing water beside the breakwater wall. "And us?"

Caleb pulled his father's hand-drawn blueprint from his coat, unfolding the water-resistant paper under the faint glow of his penlight.

"The cooling line for the bank's server vault draws three hundred gallons of lake water per minute," Caleb said, pointing to an access hatch marker on the stone wall five feet below their feet. "There's a manual maintenance airlock built into the outer masonry."

He looked at Maya, Chloe, and his mother. "We go down."

Five minutes later, Caleb dropped into the narrow, dark stone access shaft beneath the breakwater. The water inside the vertical pipe was knee-deep, smelling strongly of algae and cold river silt, vibrating with the heavy, distant thrum of the bank's industrial pumping turbines.

Maya followed right behind him, guiding Chloe and Evelyn down the iron rungs of the ladder before securing the heavy manhole cover above them.

They waded two hundred yards through the narrow, dripping stone conduit. The tunnel sloped upward, leading them deep beneath the foundation of the Banque Nationale building.

Caleb stopped at a heavy iron hatch fitted with a five-spoke pressure wheel. Over the top of the hatch, a brass plate was stamped with the bank's official emblem—the same stylized compass symbol etched into his father's watch.

"This is the outer vault firewall," Evelyn whispered, her voice echoing softly in the damp tunnel. "Behind this door is Node 02's primary cooling chamber."

Chloe brought her laptop forward, connecting a diagnostic cable to the hatch's digital override port. "Caleb, the door is protected by an active bio-lock. It requires a physical master key and a valid administrative signature."

Caleb reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out the physical access keycard he had found in his father's oilskin packet, along with the silver key stamped Suite 402 that he had taken from London.

He slid the keycard into the reader slot, then inserted the silver key into the manual cylinder below it.

The digital panel flickered from red to yellow.

System Prompt: Enter Master Auditor Identifier.

Caleb didn't hesitate. He reached into his memory, typing the old nine-digit internal auditor code he had used during his first month at Vanguard Capital four years ago—the code his father had hardwired into the system before he died.

The heavy iron door unlocked with a deep, pneumatic clunk.

The hatch swung inward, revealing a vast, dimly lit subterranean vault.

Cooling fans roared like jet engines inside two dozen tall, black server cabinets lined up across a raised glass floor. High-definition monitors mounted on the main control wall were displaying live, real-time trading feeds from every major market in Asia, Europe, and North America.

In the center of the room sat a massive master terminal. On the screen, a red countdown clock was ticking down second by second:

00:14:32 until Automated Market Liquidation.

"We made it before the nine o'clock open," Chloe whispered, stepping into the climate-controlled room. "Node 02 is still in queue!"

"Don't touch the terminal," a smooth, cultured voice called out from the shadows near the secondary server rack.

Caleb immediately stepped in front of his sister, his pistol raised.

A tall figure stepped into the dim light of the vault monitor.

It wasn't a Helios contractor.

It was a woman in a tailored gray business suit, her dark hair pulled back in a neat bun, holding a sleek silver tablet in her gloved hand. Her face was completely calm, her eyes sharp and analytical as she looked at Caleb.

"Victoria," Evelyn breathed, her voice filled with sudden, cold dread.

Caleb glanced at his mother. "You know her?"

"Victoria Vance," Evelyn said, her hand dropping to her side. "Dominic's daughter. The chief software architect for Node 02."

Victoria didn't raise a weapon. She simply tapped a button on her tablet, and the heavy iron vault door behind Caleb slammed shut with a deafening metallic bang, the lock deadbolts shooting into place.

"You're too late, Caleb," Victoria said smoothly, gesturing toward the red countdown clock on the wall. "My father's press conference was just the distraction to keep the police away from the lake. The execution code isn't running on this terminal. It's already hard-linked to the Swiss Federal Reserve's primary clearing pipeline."

She looked at the silver key in Caleb's hand and smiled thinly. "And you just brought us the final physical authorization key we needed to lock the override out forever."
