Ruth grabbed her son's arm with her trembling hands.

"Come in, son. The house felt vacant without you."

Tyler nodded and pushed her wheelchair inside.

The house's interior was in a worse condition. The paint was chipping off the walls, and most furniture was missing.

Did his parents sell everything to meet the expenses? Was their financial ruin so devastating?

Ruth took some time to rein in her emotions before she began speaking again.

"Things fell apart when you were convicted, son. The Coopers were not content with just throwing you into prison.“

”They vented their anger on our family. They usurped your dad's business and ensured he wouldn't be hired elsewhere."

"That's not the end of it. The Coopers demanded compensation of two million dollars from us.”

“We gave away all our savings, but it was not enough. We sold our jewelry and furniture. Yet, we could pay back only a small fraction of what we owed them."

Tyler clenched his fist as anger bubbled in him.

The Coopers had gone too far for their revenge, wrecking the lives of his parents.

Their brutality had made his mother a cripple!

"Those bastards!" he growled, looking at his helpless, withering mother.

Ruth used to be a beautiful, upright woman. She had been reduced to an invalid.

Ruth didn't need to explain her miserable appearance.

Tyler could only imagine the amount of mental and physical agony she must have gone through. That would break the strongest of people.

Tyler remembered about his father's ancestral land.

"We inherited land in Denter County from Grandpa. You could have moved there and sold off some agricultural land to pay off the debt."

Tyler's suggestion further aggravated his mother's mood.

"Your uncle Rollo backstabbed your father. While he was upset about your imprisonment, Rollo made him sign off all inheritance properties to his name."

Tyler pursed his lips. Rollo had always been a deceptive fraud. He had lived a spendthrift life until his share of inheritance money was exhausted.

Now, he had stolen his elder brother's property!

Ruth went on, occasionally sobbing in melancholy.

"Since nobody else would hire your dad, he had to take up a menial job in sewer maintenance.“

”It was the only way to support us. The wages are low but enough for two meals daily and to purchase at least some of my medicine."

Tyler bit his lip in anguish. It was his fault that the Coopers attacked his parents.

"Mom, I am so sorry this happened to you."

Fresh, warm tears appeared in Ruth's eyes.

"The prospect of you coming back home kept me alive, son. Now that you are back, I am sure things will start looking better.”

“Perhaps your dad can work overtime in the sewer department. We used to manage two meals daily, but now that you are here, we will need three meals.”

“You are young and need to eat well. I don't know if they fed you well in prison..."

Tyler wiped his mother's tears with his thumbs and looked into her weary eyes.

"Now that I am here, I will take care of everything, Mom. Please stop crying."

Ruth shook her head.

"Do you mean you'll get a job? But who will hire you, son? You are an ex-convict, and the Coopers have besmirched our family's name beyond repair."

Tyler hugged his mother tight and reassured her that good things were coming their way.

"Let me worry about that. I need you to stop crying and take a rest."

"Alright, son," Ruth replied with a pained smile, touching his cheek affectionately.

"Go to your room and freshen up. I'll serve you some food."

Tyler went to his room and found everything preserved the same way he had left it.

Ruth had sold furniture from the living room and the master bedroom, but her son's space was untouched.

Even when the woman was impoverished, she didn't agree to auction off his things.

Tyler approached his desk and found a picture of Erica Sinclair, his girlfriend.

After he was convicted, she promised she'd wait for him.

He intended to visit her next and make sure the Coopers hadn't ruined her life as well.

Just then, Tyler heard his mother yell from downstairs.

He rushed down to the kitchen but she wasn’t there. The main door was ajar.

The young man raced outside to find a group of severe-looking men crowding their lawn.

The leader's face was twisted in savagery as he dragged Ruth by her hair on the ground.

The old woman wailed helplessly while the other goons cackled at her misery.

"Have you forgotten us, cripple?" the leader barked.

"We're from the Hux gang hired by the Cooper family! Where's the monthly installment of ten thousand dollars? Cough it up, or I'll break your arms!"

Michelle frowned, pushing through the crowd. "Evacuation? What are you talking about, Sergeant? We just won the war against Lazarus' armies. What's the issue?"He grabbed her arm, speaking with an urgent and panicked voice. "Ma'am, there is no time for discussion. Please hurry!"The Queen followed him up the spiral stairs to the palace's observation deck. The city sprawled below like a wounded beast licking its scars. Apart from the sirens and alarms, everything seemed normal. What was the Sergeant worried about? The others trailed behind. Kat, Britta, Yara, Tracy, Isabella, and Mamushi arrived. The terrace was a station with radar tech, with screens flickering madly."My Queen… Please look," the Sergeant gasped, jabbing a finger at the central display. A blip streaked across the radar range.Michelle leaned in with raised brows. "What is that? A missile? Can't our air defense systems neutralize it? Why did you have to bring me up here?"The Sergeant looked scandalized as if he had se

"My Queen, we've lost the eastern flank!" a panicking lieutenant shouted over the roar of gunfire and crumbling buildings.Michelle Douglas stood atop the command post in Sapphire City's central square, her royal uniform smeared with soot and blood. The air was saturated with the smell of burning rubber, tar, and charred flesh. She gripped the radio tighter, trying to keep her voice steady. "Redirect the 7th Infantry from the docks. Flank them with the Gilded Guard. We must hold the square at all costs!"Petra's forces had been caught flat-footed when Lazarus Briar's armada struck at dawn. What began as a coastal skirmish erupted into a full-scale invasion. Petra, or even the American defense forces, weren't ready. It was as if the ships appeared out of a portal at sea, which probably wasn't far from the truth. They landed and spread like a contagion. Waves of black-armored soldiers stormed the beaches like locusts. At the same time, dark mages stayed in the background, weaving protec

  • 316 The Decision

"I have decided what to do. The choice is quite simple," Tyler said calmly. The young man took a deep breath. "Butch Salvatore's dying wish was for me to claim the Seraphim King's throne. He poured all those years in prison training me, gave me this sigil and ring as his legacy. I owe him that much. I can't turn back now—not when I'm standing at the gates."Everyone else present nodded in support of Tyler's decision. It was the rational thing to do."But then, Sapphire City is my home, where my family and friends live," he added thoughtfully. "Now that I am the King of Petra, Michelle's kingdom is mine too. Everything is under siege, and I'm here vying for another throne. Therefore, it was simple but difficult to arrive at my decision.""What do you mean?" Britta asked in confusion.Tyler smiled and turned to the guards, his eyes locking onto theirs. "Could you provide me with an important piece of information about Wings Island?"The taller guard raised a brow. "Speak, heir, but hurr

"Who goes there?" one of the guards boomed. Their bodies rippled with ethereal muscles under golden armor that shimmered in the tropical sun. They were clearly not human."I'm Tyler Grant," the young man declared, rolling up his sleeve to reveal the six-winged tattoo on his bicep. As soon as he had set foot on Wings Island, it had begun pulsing with a faint golden light, as if awakening to the land's call.He held up his h

The mermaid queen extended her hand towards the west, her tail coiling gracefully. "Come, husband. We'll wed each other on the iceberg altar that has existed for millennia in my realm. We can have our honeymoon on a golden glacier that flows from the island itself. Afterward, once you have satisfied my urges, you may claim your throne. However, this part of the ocean will be your new home."Tyler nodded. "That sounds wonderful. However, I need a few minutes to change into proper attire for the wedding. Right now, I am dressed like a soldier. Please ask your followers to restrain themselves meanwhile."Marsha smiled warmly and waved. Her mermaids stopped growling and eased back slightly. "I can wait, my betrothed. But hurry. The sea of desire in me grows impatient. I have waited for this moment for centuries."Tyler turned around and retreated towards belowdecks. The crew parted to give him a path with stunned silence. Their eyes followed him in disbelief. At the door, Tyler signaled T

"I'm already married," Tyler replied firmly without a second thought. "My wife is Michelle Douglas, the Queen of Petra. It is not possible for me to take another."The spectators were dumbfounded. What was the mermaid queen thinking? That she could just demand Tyler as a bridegroom, and she would get it?Marsha leaned forward, her tail swishing slowly behind her. "I don't know this tiny mortal Queen you refer to. She must be weak and pathetic.""She is anything but weak," Tyler said. "I will not tolerate another word against my Queen. This is your last warning."She waved her hand dismissively and stepped forward, sniffing the air. "I couldn't care less about mortals. I am intrigued by you, Tyler Grant."Marsha turned her nose in his direction and took a deep whiff, making him feel uncomfortable. "You reek of many women, and not just one. Many scents cling to you like barnacles on a ship's hull. I can smell a goddess, a demoness, mortals, and many more."The young man shifted in his p
