The plaza was a gauntlet of steel. Basra sprinted, his boots carving tracks into the cobblestones as he dived into the narrow, dark mouth of the Royal Crypt. He slammed the iron gate shut, his breath hitching in his chest.

“0.01 percent? I’ve survived worse odds at a tavern on a Tuesday,” Basra panted, his hands trembling as he fumbled for his torch.

“You’re talking to yourself again, aren't you?”

Basra spun, his torchlight catching a figure seated on a stone sarcophagus. It wasn't a guard. It was an ethereal, faded projection—an echo. It looked exactly like him, but its eyes were hollow.

“Who the hell are you? A ghost?” Basra asked, his voice cracking.

“I’m the last draft,” the echo replied, its voice like dry leaves. “Look at the wall, Basra. Don’t look at me. Look at the ledger.”

Basra turned, his heart thumping a violent rhythm against his ribs. The walls were covered in thousands of charcoal tally marks, layered over decades of dates. Beneath them, stacks of leather-bound journals were piled high. He grabbed the nearest one, flipping it open.

“Wait. This is… my handwriting?” Basra whispered, his eyes scanning the frantic ink. Iteration 412: Failed. The Duke noticed the change in my stride. Iteration 413: Failed. The guard had my measure.

“You’ve been here before,” the echo said, fading into the shadows. “You’ve been here hundreds of times.”

“No. No way. The System said I was a new anomaly!” Basra slammed the book shut, his hands shaking. “I just got here. I’m from… somewhere else!”

“You’re a loop, Basra. A recurring error in the code,” a voice boomed from the doorway.

Basra whirled around. Duke Ruan Sile stood there, his eyes glowing with that familiar, predatory light. Behind him, the shadows shifted. Chairil, Brody, Knox, and Archmage Chairil Koko emerged, blocking every exit.

“Ruan? You followed me here?” Basra asked, his voice tight.

“We followed the scent of a dying world,” Ruan replied, his hand resting on his sword. “You really thought you were the first to find this crypt?”

“I thought I was the first to actually read the journals!” Basra countered, backing away until his spine hit the stone.

“Those aren't journals, Basra. They’re obituaries,” Chairil rumbled, stepping into the light, his knuckles white. “Every time you reset, you lose everything. And every time, you come back slightly less human.”

“Less human? I’m standing right here!” Basra shouted, his pulse spiking as the System’s red warnings flickered in his vision.

“Are you?” Knox asked, his silver eyes cold. “Check your reflection in the tomb, Basra. Look at your own skin.”

Basra looked down at his hands. They were flickering, turning into lines of jagged, golden code. He wasn't flesh anymore; he was a glitchy projection.

“I’m… I’m not real,” Basra whispered, his voice trembling. “This whole time, I’ve been fighting to survive… to be nothing?”

“You’re a tool,” Chairil Koko sneered, leaning against the archway. “A sacrificial lamb meant to keep the engine running. And the engine is hungry.”

“Shut up! All of you!” Basra roared, his mana core beginning to glow with a blinding, violent light. “If I’m a loop, then I’m ending the loop!”

“Don’t you dare,” Brody warned, his voice uncharacteristically soft. “If you blow your core, you won’t just reset. You’ll erase this entire timeline. You’ll erase us.”

“Does it matter?” Basra laughed, a manic, broken sound. “You’re all just lines of text! You’re just obstacles in a game I’m tired of playing!”

“Is that what you think?” Ruan stepped closer, his blue eyes searching Basra’s. “That we aren't real? That your pain isn't real?”

“My pain is the only thing that is real!” Basra shrieked, the air around him crackling with electrical discharge. “I’m done being the Sacrifice! I’m going to wipe the board clean!”

“Basra, stop!” Knox reached out, his hands glowing with protective magic. “If you do this, you won’t survive the impact!”

“That’s the goal, isn’t it? Being the hero who finally quits?” Basra’s eyes turned into pools of swirling white light as his mana core reached the point of ignition.

The five men surged forward, but they were too slow. The room began to tear apart, the floorboards shattering into digital debris.

“You’re just a script,” Basra whispered to the room. “And I’m the one closing the window.”

Suddenly, the world turned charcoal grey. Everything—the Duke, the guard, the mage, the very air itself—froze in place. A hummingbird hung suspended in the air, its wings locked in mid-beat.

“Finally,” a voice whispered, sounding exactly like Basra’s, yet infinitely older and more cruel. “The idiot managed to trigger the sequence.”

Basra spun, his light dimming. A figure stepped out of the static, looking identical to him, wearing a suit of dark, tactical armor.

“Who are you?” Basra gasped.

“I am the Original,” the figure said, stepping into his personal space. “The one who actually wrote the code you’ve been living in.”

“The Original? You… you sent me here?”

“I sent you to find the kill switch,” the figure said, tapping Basra’s forehead. “But you’ve been too busy flirting with the NPCs to realize the door is unlocked.”

“NPCs? They… they felt real,” Basra whispered, his heart breaking as he looked at the frozen, desperate faces of the five men.

“They’re the most realistic trap I ever built,” the Original said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “And now, since you’ve successfully cracked the core, it’s time for me to take my body back.”

“Wait—take it back? What about me?”

“You’re the deletion,” the Original said, reaching for Basra’s throat. “Thanks for doing all the hard work, my little copy. I’ll make sure your end is quick.”

The frozen world began to shatter around them, and as the Original’s fingers closed around his neck, Basra felt his consciousness being ripped apart, pixel by pixel.
