“Don’t move,” Levi hissed, his body a solid, immovable wall against Basra’s.

The heavy, rhythmic tread of boots crunched on the gravel just inches away. Basra held his breath, his pulse thundering against the damp stone of the maze wall. Levi’s hand was still laced through his, fingers clamped with a possessive strength that felt less like protection and more like a warning.

“Check the north perimeter!” a guard shouted, his voice muffled by the thick, evergreen hedges. “The Duke wants that rat found before the bells finish tolling.”

“Understood. If he’s still on the grounds, he’s not getting out alive.”

The voices receded, fading into the rustle of the night wind. Levi didn’t let go. He leaned his forehead against Basra’s, his breath hot and ragged.

“Close one,” Basra whispered, his voice trembling despite his bravado. “How’s it feel to be an accessory to a high-profile escape?”

“It feels like a massive headache,” Levi muttered, his gaze searching Basra’s face. “You’re shaking. Is it fear, or is the mark acting up again?”

“It’s a mix of adrenaline and the sheer absurdity of my life right now,” Basra shot back, pulling his hand away with a sharp tug. “So, are we done with the ‘secret lovers’ charade? I have an academy to infiltrate.”

Levi’s expression hardened. “The Royal Magic Academy? You’re going to get yourself vaporized by the defensive wards, Basra. Those aren’t just locks; they’re sentient.”

“I’m not a fan of being vaporized, thanks. That’s why I have you to smooth-talk the sentries, right?”

“I’m not taking you there.”

“Then I’ll find a way in myself. And when I’m caught, I’ll be sure to tell them you were my main accomplice.”

Levi grabbed Basra’s collar, hauling him closer until their noses almost touched. “You don’t stop, do you? You’re a liability, an anomaly, and a death wish wrapped in a stolen skin.”

“And you’re still holding me,” Basra retorted, a smirk tugging at his lips. “Let’s go, Captain. The clock is ticking.”

The Academy archives were a cavern of hushed whispers, floating candles, and the smell of ancient, rotting parchment. Basra slipped through the side entrance, his boots silent on the marble. Beside him, Levi kept his hand on the hilt of his sword, his eyes scanning the shadows.

“We’re in,” Basra whispered. “Where’s the restricted section?”

“Down the central hall. But keep your head down—the librarian isn’t human.”

As they turned the corner, the air shimmered. A tall, pale man stood silhouetted against a wall of glowing scrolls. Lucien Hart didn't turn, but the candles in the room flared a violent, aggressive red.

“You’re late, Basra,” Lucien said, his voice echoing with an unnerving, melodic cadence. “I’ve been expecting a visitor who smells of palace intrigue and… what is that? The scent of a guard’s desperation?”

Basra stepped into the light, masking his nerves with a lazy shrug. “I’m flattered, Lucien. Do you keep a calendar of my arrivals, or are you just that bored?”

Lucien turned slowly. His eyes were like pinpricks of dark ink. “I track anomalies. And you, my dear guest, are a very noisy ripple in a very still pond.”

Levi stepped forward, his blade half-drawn. “We aren’t here for riddles, Hart. We need access to the threat-matrix files.”

Lucien laughed, a dry sound that made the room vibrate. “Threats? You want to know why I flag him? Look at the ink on his skin, Captain. It isn't magic. It’s a code.”

“A code for what?” Basra asked, his voice tightening.

“For deletion,” Lucien replied, walking toward them. “You’re not just a person here, Basra. You’re a bug in the program. And the system is currently initiating its final patch.”

“Enough,” Levi growled, moving to shield Basra. “What does that mean?”

“It means,” Lucien whispered, stopping inches from Basra, “that the world is realizing you don't belong. Tell me, Basra, does it hurt to know that your heartbeat is essentially a countdown clock?”

“Is that the best you’ve got?” Basra scoffed, though his skin prickled with cold. “A little bit of doom-and-gloom talk? I’ve had better conversations with the Duke.”

“The Duke is a puppet,” Lucien said, his eyes glazing over as he tapped his temple. “But you… you’re something else. You know, don't you? That you aren't the first to wake up in this body?”

Basra went cold. “What are you talking about?”

“The previous tenant,” Lucien leaned in, his voice a low, taunting rasp. “He didn't leave. He was overwritten. And you’re just the next draft waiting to be erased.”

“Shut up,” Basra hissed, his hand reaching for the shelf behind him, his fingers brushing against a glowing, forbidden grimoire.

“Careful,” Lucien warned, his lips curving into a sharp, jagged smile. “That’s the Archive’s heart. If you pull that, you’ll burn the entire wing to the ground.”

“Maybe that’s the point,” Basra muttered, his resolve hardening.

He didn't hesitate. He yanked the grimoire from its pedestal.

The room shrieked.

The floor beneath them buckled, the walls pixelating into violent bursts of white light. A deep, mechanical groan vibrated through the floorboards—the academy’s defensive wards were collapsing, tearing reality along with them.

“You absolute moron!” Levi roared, grabbing Basra by the waist as the floor dropped away.

“You said you wanted to keep me safe!” Basra yelled over the roar of the collapsing ceiling. “This is the fastest exit!”

“This is suicide!”

“It’s a tactical retreat!”

The hallway folded like paper. Stone gargoyles shattered into digital dust. Lucien didn't move; he stood in the center of the chaos, his eyes locked on Basra with a terrifying, knowing intensity.

“Go ahead!” Lucien shouted over the din. “Run back to your reality! But it doesn't matter how fast you move—the system already knows your real name!”

Basra felt the world dissolve into static. He clung to Levi as they tumbled into a void of black light, the air screaming around them. The last thing he saw before his vision blurred was Lucien, standing perfectly still amidst the destruction, his smile wide and utterly devoid of pity.

“Wait!” Basra gasped, trying to reach out as the walls turned to digital wind. “What did you say?”

Lucien’s voice drifted through the static, impossibly clear: “I know you’re a transmigrator, Basra. And I know exactly when your connection to this world is going to be severed.”

The world shattered.

Basra felt his consciousness fraying, the System’s red alerts flashing in his mind—not in text, but in a panicked, stuttering code.

He hit the ground hard, the cold stone of a dark, abandoned hallway knocking the wind out of him. Levi was pinned under a pile of debris, gasping for air, his hand still gripping Basra’s jacket.

Basra scrambled up, his heart hammering against his ribs. The hallway ahead was dark, stretching into an endless, shifting nightmare. He looked back at Levi, but the guard’s eyes were unfocused, his face pale.

“Levi?” Basra whispered, his voice shaking.

Levi didn’t answer. He slumped, his grip loosening as a glowing, red sigil began to burn across his own chest—the exact same mark that Basra bore.

Basra’s breath hitched. A cold, mechanical chime echoed through the silence of the dying academy.
