The cafeteria doors groaned on rusted hinges as they pushed inside, the air within smelling of stale grease and long-dried despair. They didn't stop for food. They didn't stop to scavenge the overturned tables. Kirill, moving with the gait of a man who had pushed his body past its absolute limit, led the way through the back service entrance, bypassing the main floor to reach the small, reinforced storage closet he’d been using as a makeshift bunker.

Once the door was locked and bolted, the silence felt heavy, pressing against their eardrums. Rafael slumped against a stack of crates, his hands trembling as he pulled the Essence Siphon from his bag. It was still glowing, a rhythmic, pulsing light that seemed to dim and brighten in time with his own heartbeat.

"So," Kirill said, his chest heaving as he dropped his blade to the floor with a metallic clatter. "That’s the prize. You have any idea what it actually does, or are we just staring at it like it’s a Christmas light?"

Rafael wiped sweat from his brow, his eyes fixed on the pulsating organ. "I’m not sure. But when I touch it, I feel… everything. It’s not just energy. It’s like a recipe waiting for a cook."

"A recipe," Kirill scoffed, though he leaned in closer, his gaze hungry. "If that thing blows up in your face, I’m not sticking around to scrape you off the wall. You sure about this?"

"I’m a Cook, Kirill. This is my class. If I can figure out how to process this, we won't just be surviving. We’ll be thriving." Rafael looked up at him, his face pale but determined. "You trust me, or are we going to keep eating garbage-tier rations?"

Kirill sighed, running a hand through his matted, blood-streaked hair. "Look, kid. You saved my skin back there with that paste. I’m along for the ride. Just… don’t burn the place down, alright?"

Rafael nodded. He placed the Siphon on a flat, metal tray. The moment it touched the surface, the room shifted. A faint, low-frequency hum began to vibrate through the floorboards.

"Hey, do you feel that?" Kirill took a half-step back, his hand instinctively going to the hilt of his sword. "The air feels… heavy. Static-y."

"It’s the energy," Rafael whispered. He reached out with his fingertips, feeling the ambient mana in the room begin to warp and bend toward the Siphon. "It’s not just a drop. It’s a nexus. It’s drawing in everything around it."

"Rafael, maybe we should stop," Kirill said, his voice dropping to a warning growl. "My skin is literally crawling. If that thing is a trap, you need to pull your hand away."

"I can't!" Rafael gasped, his eyes widening. His fingers felt glued to the surface of the organ. "It’s feeding off the room’s ambient energy. And it’s… it’s trying to connect to my class skill."

"Well, break the connection! Throw it out the vent!"

"I can't let go!"

The room erupted in a sudden, blinding flash of cerulean light. The storage closet, once dim and claustrophobic, became an arena of raw, volatile power. Every loose object—pens, cans of beans, scrap metal—began to hover, caught in a rising gravitational tide.

"Dammit!" Kirill roared, lunging forward and grabbing Rafael by the waist. "Let go, Rafael! We’re going to lose the ceiling!"

"It’s not just an essence!" Rafael screamed over the howling wind of static energy. "It’s a stabilizer! If I can lock it into a recipe, I can turn this whole room into a buff zone!"

"You’re going to kill us both!" Kirill strained, his muscles bulging as he tried to drag the boy away from the tray. "I don't need a zone, I need us to be alive!"

"Just give me a second! Just one!"

The energy pulsed again, a literal wave of pressure that sent the metal shelves buckling inward. The walls of the bunker began to groan under the sheer weight of the magical buildup. The air turned sharp, tasting of ozone and scorched copper.

"Rafael, now!" Kirill slammed his shoulder into the table, trying to flip it, but the table was pinned to the floor by the sheer density of the mana. "It’s too much! You’re losing control!"

Rafael gritted his teeth, his eyes glowing with the same hue as the Siphon. He ignored the pain radiating up his arms, focusing entirely on the interface flickering in his peripheral vision.

"I’m almost there!" Rafael shrieked. "I just need to finish the infusion!"

Kirill cursed, seeing a fissure spiderweb across the concrete ceiling. He realized they were seconds away from the entire room imploding. He didn't think; he acted. He drew his blade, not to attack, but to ground the energy. He drove the tip of his sword into the floor, channeling his own remaining reserves into the metal, creating a secondary circuit for the energy to bleed out.

"Take it!" Kirill roared at the Siphon. "Take my energy, just stop the damn feedback!"

The Siphon surged one final time, a silent explosion of light that turned the room into a silhouette of shadows and gold. Rafael slammed his palm down onto the organ, forcing his will into the chaotic mass.

The silence that followed was deafening. The hovering objects dropped to the floor with a rhythmic clatter of debris. The walls, heavily scarred and warped, held just barely, their structural integrity saved by the grace of a millimeter.

Rafael fell backward, gasping for air, his skin coated in a thin sheen of cold sweat. Kirill was on his knees, his sword vibrating as it stuck into the floor, his face white as a sheet.

"Are… are we dead?" Rafael wheezed, staring up at the ceiling.

Kirill let out a laugh that sounded more like a choked sob. He pulled his sword from the floor, his hands shaking so violently he nearly dropped it. "No. We’re alive. But we’re never doing that again. Do you hear me? Never."

"It worked, though," Rafael whispered, holding up his hands. They were still flickering with a soft, residual blue light. "Look at the air. It’s calm. It’s… it’s saturated with mana now."

Kirill looked around the room, then at his own body. He stood up, testing his limbs. He looked at his own reflection in the metal of the wall—his wounds were already knitting together at an accelerated rate. His exhaustion, the deep, soul-crushing fatigue that had dogged him for days, had vanished.

"You really did it," Kirill muttered, his voice full of disbelief. "My stats. They’re climbing. Just by standing in here."

"I told you," Rafael said, wiping his face with his sleeve. "I’m a Cook. I just needed the right ingredients."

Kirill stared at him, his expression a complex mix of fear and newfound, dangerous ambition. "You’re not just a cook anymore, Rafael. If you can do this—if you can turn a hole-in-the-wall closet into a sanctuary—the entire school is going to want a piece of you."

"Let them try," Rafael said, though he didn't quite believe his own bravado.

Just as Kirill turned to pick up his discarded gear, a sharp, rhythmic sound cut through the quiet.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

It wasn't a monster. It was deliberate. Calculated. Human.

Kirill froze, his eyes locking onto the door. He crept forward, his sword raised, his posture returning to the lethal, predator-like stance of the star quarterback.

"Who’s there?" Kirill shouted, his voice a low, threatening rumble.

From the other side of the door, a voice smooth, cold, and utterly out of place in this hellish school echoed back. "We heard the fireworks, gentlemen. Don't worry, we aren't here to kill you. We’re here to make an offer. Open the door, and we can talk about how you’re going to spend the rest of your short, miserable lives."

Rafael scrambled to his feet, grabbing his shears. "A guild?"

Kirill leaned his back against the door, his face twisting into a grimace of pure, unfiltered annoyance. "Not just a guild, Rafael. The vultures have arrived."

The "buff" he had just forced into the room had drained him of every ounce of energy. He looked up at Elena, who was staring at the cooling body of the massive beast they’d slain in the basement."That thing," Rafael said, his voice raspy. "You saw how it moved. The flare gun in Elena’s hand didn't waver, but her eyes flickered toward the massive, cooling corpse of the behemoth in the hallway. She looked back at them, her expression unreadable."You two are either suicidal or you have the luck of the devil," Elena said, her voice cutting through the hum of the communications equipment. "That thing has been hunting in the sub-basement for three days. It wiped out an entire extraction team yesterday."Kirill exhaled, his frame finally sagging as the adrenaline began to bleed away. He didn't lower his sword, but he pointed it toward the floor. "We aren't suicidal. We’re just hungry. And we’re tired of running."Elena finally lowered the flare gun, though she kept it gripped tight. She took a half-step back, revealing the cluttered desk behind her. "I’m Elena. I’ve been monitoring the comms since the blackout started. You’re the 'Chef' and the 'Blade,' aren't you? The ones the Collective is hunting?"Rafael wiped a streak of oily sweat from his f

The basement air was thick, tasting of coolant, rust, and the metallic tang of something much, much larger than a rat."Are you serious?" Rafael whispered, his voice cracking. "That’s a sealed exit. We’re in a coffin."Kirill stood between Rafael and the heavy, rhythmic thudding echoing from the shadows. His shoulders were bunched, his grip on his sword so tight the leather wrap creaked. "It’s not a coffin, kid. It’s an oven. And we’re the ones deciding the temperature.""An oven? We’re about to be the main course!" Rafael backed away, his boots sliding on the oil-slicked floor. "That thing—whatever it is—is the size of a transit bus. I saw the silhouette. The storage closet was silent, save for the rhythmic metallic scraping of Rafael sharpening his shears against a piece of scavenged rebar. He crumpled it into a ball and tossed it into the pile of useless trash."That's the last of the good stuff, isn't it?" Kirill asked, his voice rough.Rafael sighed, setting his shears down. "Yeah. Everything else in the bag is just base-level junk. It’s not going to keep you running at peak efficiency for long."Kirill looked up, his jaw set in a hard line. "I can feel the lag setting in already. My stamina's not refilling as fast as it was an hour ago. If we don't get fresh, high-density ingredients, we're going to be sitting ducks when that collective comes back.""I know," Rafael replied,
