Chapter 2: Midnight Errands

The countdown on the phone screen ticked downward with agonizing precision. Daren stood at the edge of the park, the shredded steel link still clutched in his hand. He looked at his fingers, then back at the park. Everything felt different, sharper, the air smelling faintly of ozone and impending rain.

"Is this it?" Daren muttered, his voice cracking. "I’m just supposed to walk into the dark because an app told me to?"

"The vessel is ready," Aethelgard’s voice resonated in his skull, cold and clinical. "You possess the capacity now, Daren. Do not squander your potential with hesitation. The alley on 4th Street. Move."

"An alley? Seriously? That’s where every horror movie starts, man. Why can’t I go to the police station or something?" Daren shoved the phone into his pocket, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"Police? They are blind to the rot," the Architect scoffed. "They deal in paperwork and petty theft. We deal in the erasure of existences that should never have been. You are not a citizen tonight, Daren. You are an instrument."

Daren started walking, his legs feeling heavy, yet strangely responsive. Every step felt like he was pushing off a spring. He reached the entrance of the alleyway, the shadows pooling in the corners like spilled ink. The streetlights overhead flickered, buzzing with an uneven, sickly yellow hum.

"I don’t see anything," Daren whispered, gripping the phone tight. "It’s just trash and empty dumpsters. Are you sure I’m in the right place?"

"Look closer," Aethelgard commanded. "Above you."

Daren tilted his head back. At first, he saw nothing but the dark silhouettes of fire escapes. Then, the shadows began to warp. A thick, viscous blackness was pooling around the base of the nearest street lamp, undulating like liquid tar. It was climbing the pole, not like a shadow, but like a parasite, drinking the light from the bulb.

"What is that?" Daren gasped, stumbling back. "That’s... that’s not normal, right? Tell me that’s a leak or something."

"It is a Shade-Eater," the voice replied, devoid of emotion. "It consumes the electrical energy of your infrastructure, leaving behind only decay. If left unchecked, it will plunge your entire block into a permanent, freezing void. You must purge it."

"Purge it? How? I’m holding a smartphone, not a ghost-busting proton pack!" Daren shouted, his voice echoing off the brick walls.

"Access the interface," Aethelgard urged, the voice growing sharp. "Navigate to the combat tab. Select 'Static Discharge.' Do it now, before it notices you."

Daren scrambled to unlock the screen. His fingers were slick with sweat, making the glass harder to handle. He swiped rapidly. A menu he hadn't seen before materialized—a series of glowing geometric patterns. He tapped the icon that looked like a jagged bolt of lightning.

"Okay, I’m in. Now what? Do I throw the phone at it?"

"Hold it toward the target," the Architect instructed. "Channel your intent. You are the conduit. Do not let the energy dissipate into your own flesh, or you will be scorched."

The creature on the pole paused. Its head—a featureless mass of shifting, oily darkness—swiveled toward Daren. It let out a sound like a thousand dying radio signals, a high-pitched, screeching static that made Daren’s teeth ache.

"It sees me!" Daren screamed, raising the phone like a shield. "Hey! Over here, you ugly piece of tar!"

"Direct the flow, Daren!"

Daren didn't have time to think. He felt a sudden, violent surge of heat travel up his arm, originating from the phone. It was like sticking his finger into an electrical socket, but without the pain—just raw, terrifying power. A crackling arc of golden light burst from the screen, illuminating the alley in a blinding, strobe-like flash.

The bolt struck the creature dead-center. The Shade-Eater let out a silent, vacuum-like howl, its substance turning into gray ash before it could even hit the ground. The street light exploded, glass raining down around Daren’s boots.

Daren fell backward, gasping for air. The alley plunged into total darkness, save for the faint, steady glow emanating from his phone. His arm felt numb, tingling as if it had fallen asleep and woken up all at once.

"Did I... did I kill it?" he panted, staring at the pile of gray soot where the entity had been.

"You obliterated it," Aethelgard noted, though the voice sounded almost bored. "The substrate has been cleansed. Are you satisfied, or do you require a moment to compose your brittle psyche?"

"Satisfied? I nearly died!" Daren scrambled to his feet, checking his arm for burns. There was nothing, just a strange, glowing vein-pattern fading beneath his skin. "What did you do to me? My arm feels like it’s full of buzzing bees."

"A side effect of the conduit process," the Architect replied. "It will stabilize as your form adapts. Check your status. You have leveled up."

Daren squinted at the screen. The interface had changed again. A new bar appeared at the top: LEVEL: 2. KINETIC RECEPTIVITY: INCREASED. NEXT UPGRADE: 12:00 AM.

"Level two? This isn't a game, Aethelgard. Real things—monsters!—are trying to kill me. What happens at midnight? You said there was a 'Real World Mission.' Does that mean there are more of these things?"

"Many more," the voice said. "Your city is a honeycomb of corruption. You have only scratched the surface, little mortal. You are the Architect’s blade now. You will go where the rot is thickest."

"I never asked for this! Why me? Why not just pick someone else? Someone who actually likes fighting?"

"Because you were stagnant," Aethelgard replied, the voice dripping with cold irony. "You were rotting from the inside, consuming nothing, producing nothing, waiting for an end that would have been as pathetic as your beginning. I have given you purpose."

Daren looked down at the site of the kill. Amidst the gray, powdery ash left behind by the creature, something caught the moonlight. He knelt down, his curiosity momentarily overriding his terror. Nestled in the dirt was a small, circular object. He reached out and picked it up.

It was a coin, heavy and cold, minted from a metal that seemed to absorb the light around it. It glowed with a sickly, bruised violet hue, pulsing in rhythm with his own heartbeat.

"What is this?" Daren asked, his thumb tracing the jagged, alien symbols engraved on its surface.

"A remnant," Aethelgard said, its voice dropping to a whisper that felt like a warning. "A token of the void. Do not keep it in your pocket. It is a beacon, and it will draw predators far worse than a mere Shade-Eater to your doorstep."

"A beacon? If it’s so dangerous, why tell me about it? Why not just have me throw it away?"

"Because you must learn to recognize the scent of your enemies, Daren. You will need more than just brute strength to survive the coming hours."

Daren stood up, the coin burning cold against his palm. He looked at the dead street lamp, the silent alley, and then back at the phone. He realized then that he wasn't going home to sleep. He wasn't going to go back to his morning routine, his mountain range wallpaper, or his quiet life.

"Fine," Daren said, his voice hardening, losing the edge of hysteria that had characterized his earlier words. "But I’m not just a tool. If I’m doing this, I’m going to know why. No more secrets, Architect. Next time you want me to hunt something, you tell me exactly what it is."

"We shall see, mortal," Aethelgard replied. "We shall see."

Daren pocketed the coin, tucked the phone into his jacket, and turned toward the exit of the alley. He stepped out onto the sidewalk, walking into the night with a steady, unfamiliar gait, leaving the darkness of the alley behind him, unaware that the violet light of the coin was already beginning to bleed through the fabric of his pocket, casting a long, strange shadow against the pavement.

Are you another one of those corporate goons?""No," the voice replied, its tone as dry as dead leaves scraping against pavement. "I am what remains of his previous conquest. She tumbled forward onto her hands and knees.“Get away from me,” she choked, silver eyes flashing. “Don’t touch me, puppet.”“I’m trying to help you!” Daren reached out, then pulled back as she hissed. “The alarm’s already going. Now put on the sunglasses and move. We have wasted enough time.”Daren grabbed a pair of cheap polarized sunglasses from the counter. “I’m going to look like an absolute idiot. Who wears sunglasses at midnight?”“An idiot who wishes to keep his eyes from drawing every apex predator in the city. Slide them on. The corporate offices of Apex Dynamics are three blocks away.”“Apex Dynamics?” Daren slipped the dark lenses over his nose. The faint violet glow still seeped through the edges. “Why are we going there? That’s a tech conglomerate.”“They have harvested a fragment of my design. They call it ‘Project Aether.’ They think they can weaponize it. They are fools. You will retrieve it.”“Retrieve it? You mean steal it.

No signal?” He tapped the screen frantically. “Come on, go through!”“The signal is blocked, mortal,” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside his mind. “Do not waste your limited cognitive capacity on futile endeavors.”“You did this!” Daren accused, glaring at the golden phone on the bed. “You blocked my service! Why? Who sent that text?”“An irrelevant distraction. A cockroach scurrying in the dark, whispering lies to a tool that does not belong to them. The violet light from the coin pulsed like a bruised heartbeat through his jeans.“Seriously, shut it off,” he hissed. “You said this thing is a beacon. I might as well be carrying a neon ‘Eat Me’ sign.”“The light is a byproduct of its containment,” Aethelgard’s voice vibrated in his teeth. “It has no off switch. It is a fragment of a collapsed reality. If it inconveniences you, you should have left it in the ash.”“And let someone else find it? Yeah, right.” Daren reached his building, fumbled with the keys, and dove inside. He took the stairs two at a time, legs strangely light, as if gravity had loosened its grip. Inside his cramped studio he slammed the door, locked every bolt, and leaned against the wood in the dark, breathing hard.“Okay. Where do I hide a glowing interdimensional coin?”“The closet,” Aethelgard suggested. “Under the weight of your discarded failures.”“You mea
