Chapter 4: System Update

“Who is this?” Daren muttered, thumb hovering over the glowing keys of his normal phone. “How do you have my number? Answer me.”

He typed: Who are you? What do you mean the Architect is a liar?

A red circle with a hostile exclamation point popped up instantly.

“What? No signal?” He tapped the screen frantically. “Come on, go through!”

“The signal is blocked, mortal,” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside his mind. “Do not waste your limited cognitive capacity on futile endeavors.”

“You did this!” Daren accused, glaring at the golden phone on the bed. “You blocked my service! Why? Who sent that text?”

“An irrelevant distraction. A cockroach scurrying in the dark, whispering lies to a tool that does not belong to them. Focus on what matters.”

“It matters to me!” Daren yelled, grabbing his hair as he paced. “They knew my name! They said you’re a liar! Are you lying about this midnight mission?”

“I do not lie,” Aethelgard replied, tone freezing cold. “Lying requires a vulnerability to the truth. I simply dictate reality. Now pick up the tether. Your physical vessel requires structural reinforcement.”

“I’m not picking up anything until you give me real answers. I want to know who texted me, who is on that roof, and why my eyes feel like they’re vibrating!”

“Your demands are as pathetic as they are useless. The update has already been scheduled. Initiating protocol: Physical Consolidation.”

A sharp, heavy click echoed through the room.

Daren ran to the door and twisted the brass knob with both hands. It was fused solid. “Hey! Let me out!”

“The chamber is sealed. The restructuring of your genetic scaffolding requires absolute isolation. External interference during the fusion phase would result in cellular liquefaction.”

“Cellular liquefaction?!” He threw his shoulder against the door. “Are you insane? I don’t want to be restructured!”

He lunged for the window. The metal frame didn’t budge. A faint static charge buzzed across the glass, biting his fingertips.

“Ouch!” He pulled his hand back. “You’re locking me in my own apartment?”

“I can, and I am. Prepare yourself. The process is non-trivial.”

“No, wait! Let me call Lucas!” Daren grabbed his normal phone and tapped his friend’s name. A weak, garbled ringing tone came through.

“Lucas? Lucas, are you there?”

“Daren?” Lucas’s voice was warped, slowed as if through heavy water. “Is… that… you? Where… are…”

“Lucas, listen! I’m trapped in my apartment! Something is happening to me! My phone is—”

“Do not speak to the mundane,” Aethelgard cut in, overriding the speaker.

The line dissolved into piercing static. Daren dropped the phone. The screen went black.

“No! Lucas!” He kicked the bedside table. “Why did you do that? He’s my best friend!”

“He is a liability. The builders of old did not consult with the cattle before they laid the foundations of the temple. Your past relationships are obsolete.”

“He is not cattle! He’s a real, living person! Unlike you!”

“I am the structure of your salvation. You are wasting precious energy on sentimentality. Look out the window again.”

Daren crept back to the glass. “The silhouette… it’s still there.”

“Yes. The Collector waits. He knows the scent of the newborn. If you do not undergo the update, he will peel the marrow from your bones before the clock strikes twelve.”

“Peel my marrow? Are you trying to scare me into this?”

“I do not try. I state the parameters of your survival. The process begins now.”

A wave of blinding white heat erupted from the center of Daren’s chest. He fell to his knees, clutching his ribs as his lungs seized.

“Ah! God! It burns!” He choked. “Stop it! Please!”

“Endure it. Your skeletal structure is being infused with kinetic resonance. Your bones must be dense enough to withstand the impact of your new velocity.”

“It feels like acid in my marrow!” He groaned, rolling onto his side. “I can’t breathe!”

“Breathe through the pain, vessel. You chose Agility. Now your nervous system must be rewired to support the transmission speed. Do not lose consciousness. If your mind slips, the energy will lack a pilot and consume you from within.”

“You absolute bastard!” Daren gasped, teeth clenched. “I hate you!”

“Your hatred is a viable fuel source. Channel it. Keep your mind awake. Sixty-two percent complete.”

“I’m going to die,” he wept, body twitching. Golden veins of light pulsed beneath his skin. “I’m going to die in a stupid studio apartment.”

“You will not die. You are being rebuilt. Eighty percent. The density is stabilizing.”

Daren let out a raw scream as a final shockwave of pain ripped from his spine to his fingertips. His back arched off the floor, vision flashing brilliant violet.

Then silence.

The pain vanished, leaving a cold, hollow numbness. Daren lay panting, sweat pooling on the wood.

“Update complete,” Aethelgard announced. “Your physical capacity has been elevated to Level 3. Kinetic absorption rates are now optimal.”

Daren stared at the dust motes for a long time. “You… you did that on purpose.”

“Of course. Efficiency dictates that the vessel must be reinforced before the midnight hour. You would not have survived the initial impact of the upcoming mission otherwise.”

He slowly pushed himself up. He felt lighter, almost weightless, yet incredibly solid. His hands no longer shook.

“I don’t care,” he whispered, cold anger settling in his chest. “I didn’t ask for this.”

He walked to the bed and stared down at the glowing Aethelgard phone. The countdown ticked: 01:45:12.

“You think you own me,” he said, voice dangerously quiet. “You think because you put some magic spark in my bones, I’m just going to do whatever your stupid app says.”

“You have no alternative.”

“We’ll see about that.”

In a sudden explosion of movement—far faster than he had ever moved before—Daren snatched the glowing phone and slammed it face-down onto the iron radiator.

A sharp crack filled the room.

He threw it to the floor and stomped with his heavy boot, channeling his new strength. The plastic and metal buckled. The screen splintered into a spiderweb of dead black shards.

He stood over the ruined device, chest heaving. “There. How’s that for your tether?”

For a second, silence.

Then soft golden light leaked from the cracks. The shards floated upward, held together by a web of liquid fire.

“An amusing display of primitive rage,” Aethelgard laughed, louder and clearer than ever. “Did you truly believe my existence was bound to a handful of silicon and glass?”

Daren stumbled back. “No… I broke it. I destroyed the phone!”

The shattered pieces projected a floating holographic interface into the air. The countdown still glowed a vibrant, mocking gold.

“The device was merely a training wheels interface for your infantile mind. The system is now fully integrated into your biological structure. I am not in the phone, Daren. I am in you.”

Cold dread washed over him. “You’re… in my head. For good?”

“Until your utility expires. Now look at yourself. See the mark of your progression.”

Daren turned and caught his reflection in the dark glass of the microwave.

He gasped.

His eyes, normally dull brown, were glowing. A faint, unmistakable ring of violet light circled his pupils, pulsing slowly, matching the exact rhythm of the coin hidden in his closet.

“What did you do to my eyes?” He touched his eyelid. “It won’t fade. Everyone will see this.”

“Let them look,” Aethelgard said, voice fading into a quiet, ominous hum. “They will learn to fear the light of the Architect. Prepare yourself, Daren. One hour remains.”

She tumbled forward onto her hands and knees.“Get away from me,” she choked, silver eyes flashing. “Don’t touch me, puppet.”“I’m trying to help you!” Daren reached out, then pulled back as she hissed. “The alarm’s already going. Now put on the sunglasses and move. We have wasted enough time.”Daren grabbed a pair of cheap polarized sunglasses from the counter. “I’m going to look like an absolute idiot. Who wears sunglasses at midnight?”“An idiot who wishes to keep his eyes from drawing every apex predator in the city. Slide them on. The corporate offices of Apex Dynamics are three blocks away.”“Apex Dynamics?” Daren slipped the dark lenses over his nose. The faint violet glow still seeped through the edges. “Why are we going there? That’s a tech conglomerate.”“They have harvested a fragment of my design. They call it ‘Project Aether.’ They think they can weaponize it. They are fools. You will retrieve it.”“Retrieve it? You mean steal it.

It is a fragment of a collapsed reality. If it inconveniences you, you should have left it in the ash.”“And let someone else find it? Yeah, right.” Daren reached his building, fumbled with the keys, and dove inside. He took the stairs two at a time, legs strangely light, as if gravity had loosened its grip. Inside his cramped studio he slammed the door, locked every bolt, and leaned against the wood in the dark, breathing hard.“Okay. Where do I hide a glowing interdimensional coin?”“The closet,” Aethelgard suggested. “Under the weight of your discarded failures.”“You mea
