Chapter 7: Fall and Rise
“Hold on!” Daren screamed, the wind tearing the words from his mouth.
“What are you doing?!” Valerie shrieked, fingers digging into his shoulders as the cold night air roared past them.
“I’m trying to keep us from becoming a permanent stain on the sidewalk!”
“Do not let the kinetic potential dissipate!” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside Daren’s head. “Channel the air resistance! Force the energy downward to break your momentum! Do it now, or you will both perish!”
“I don’t know how!” Daren panicked. “Tell me how!”
“Will it! Command your marrow to push back against gravity! Release the resonance!”
“Push back!” Daren roared, thrusting his free arm toward the approaching asphalt. “Just push back! Go!”
A massive shockwave of violet light erupted from his palms, forming a pressurized cushion of raw energy beneath them. The air warped and crackled with static.
The violent descent slowed in a split second. They crashed heavily onto the lid of a commercial metal dumpster. The lid buckled under their weight, but the violet shield absorbed the worst of the impact.
“Are you okay?” Daren groaned, rolling onto the wet pavement. “Are you still in one piece?”
Valerie fell beside him, coughing. “I’m… alive. Barely. You actually warped the fall.”
“I told you I had a trick.” He offered a hand. “Can you stand?”
“Don’t touch me.” She slapped his hand away and struggled to her feet, leaning against the brick wall. “We have to get out of here. The security teams won’t be far behind.”
“Yeah. My apartment isn’t far. We can hide there and figure out our next move.”
“Are you insane?” Valerie’s voice sharpened. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”
“What? I just jumped off a building to save you!”
“We are not together!” She backed into the shadows. “You have a glowing target painted on your soul. The Unmaker of Dawns is riding in your skull. He can track you wherever you go, and he wants me dead.”
“I didn’t choose him! I’m trying to get rid of him!”
“You can’t get rid of him! If I stay near you, Apex Dynamics and your parasitic god will both find me in minutes. I have to go.”
“Valerie, you don’t even have a coat! Where are you going in a white jumpsuit?”
“Somewhere safe.” Her silver eyes caught the streetlamp light. “Stop taking his orders. If you keep doing what he says, you won’t have a soul left to save. He will hollow you out.”
She turned and sprinted into the dark, vanishing almost instantly.
“Valerie!” Only distant sirens answered.
“Let the defiled scrap run,” Aethelgard sneered. “She is a broken instrument of a dead age. Your sympathy is a design flaw.”
“Shut up. My head is pounding and my body feels like it’s on fire.”
“You have far greater concerns than a headache. Access your communication network. Look at what your precious human society has done while you were busy playing hero.”
Daren pulled out his normal phone. The signal was weak, but the network worked. He opened a local news app.
“Oh, no. No, no, no.”
“What do you see, mortal?”
“‘Breaking news,’” he read, voice trembling. “‘A domestic terrorist attack has occurred at the corporate headquarters of Apex Dynamics. Police have released security footage of the primary suspect, identified as twenty-four-year-old Daren Vance…’”
“And there is your face,” Aethelgard said with dark satisfaction. “A pristine portrait of a criminal.”
“They’re calling me a terrorist. They have my name. My picture. It’s all over the internet. My life is over.”
“You are a threat to their illusion of control. The corporate rulers will hunt you like a rabid animal. You cannot return home. You cannot contact your friends. You have been fully excised from your world.”
“Because of you!” Daren yelled at the empty alley. “You set me up! You forced me to break into that building!”
“I elevated you. I gave you the strength to survive. Now proceed to the next node. The transformation must continue.”
“No.” Cold resolve settled in Daren’s chest. “I’m done. I’m not taking another step for you. I’m not going to be your weapon.”
“You do not have a choice. I can easily override your nervous system and force your limbs to move. You are a vessel, nothing more.”
“Then why haven’t you done it yet?” Daren stepped into the middle of the alley. “If you could just control me like a puppet, you wouldn’t be trying so hard to convince me. You need me to cooperate. You need my brain to pilot this kinetic energy.”
“Do not mistake my patience for limitation, mortal.”
“I’m not mistaking anything.” Daren looked at his phone. The golden holographic interface of the Aethelgard app still floated above the screen. “You said this app was just training wheels. But it’s still the bridge between your world and mine. It’s how you channel your commands.”
“It is a tether. A conduit of absolute order. Do not touch it.”
“I’m going to do more than touch it.” A wild grin broke across his face. “I’m going to jailbreak you.”
“Amusing. A primitive organic creature attempting to hack the sacred geometry of the heavens? You do not possess the syntax.”
“Maybe not. But I have Level Three kinetic resonance. And you said it yourself—I can direct the charge. I can act as a lightning rod.”
“What are you doing?” Aethelgard’s voice lost its cold composure. “Desist immediately! You are playing with forces that will vaporize your consciousness!”
“Let’s see how your sacred geometry likes a massive electrical override.”
Daren focused on the buzzing heat in his chest, pulling the raw static energy up his arm. He concentrated it into a fine, needle-like spark at the tip of his index finger and pressed it directly onto the floating golden interface.
“Warning,” a mechanical system voice chimed. “Unauthorized access detected. Core protocols compromised. Initiating counter-measures.”
“Stop!” Aethelgard screamed, a deafening screech that made Daren’s ears bleed. “You will destroy the vessel! You will liquefy your own synapses!”
“I’d rather have my brain melted than be your slave!” Daren pushed more energy into the holographic code. The golden lines warped, flickering violently between gold and chaotic red.
“Self-defense protocol: Active.”
A sharp surge of cold electricity shot backward from the phone into Daren’s chest. He fell to his knees, vision flashing in agony.
“Desist!” Aethelgard roared, voice cracking. “You cannot break the foundation! I am the Architect!”
“Just… break!” Daren poured every last drop of kinetic marrow into the glowing screen.
The golden interface flared with blinding brilliance. The air buzzed so intensely the brick walls vibrated.
Then, with a sound like a physical snap, the light shattered.
The golden glow vanished. The phone screen went pitch black.
Silence. The oppressive voice of Aethelgard was gone. The constant hum in Daren’s chest had vanished, leaving him feeling utterly, wonderfully empty.
Daren collapsed onto his back, staring up at the narrow strip of cloudy sky. “I… I did it,” he whispered, a weak victorious smile spreading across his face. “He’s gone. He’s actually gone.”
He lay there listening to the distant, harmless sounds of the city. For the first time in days, his mind was entirely his own.
He slowly pushed himself up and picked up the phone. The screen remained dead, a cold black mirror.
Suddenly, the dead screen vibrated.
A single line of text appeared, glowing not with golden light, but with a deep, bottomless crimson.
He is not the god you think he is.
Daren’s breath hitched. “What is this? Who’s writing this?”
A deep, raspy voice whispered directly into his ear.
“He is not the god you think he is.”

"Who is writing this?""He is not the god you think he is," the deep, raspy voice repeated, seeming to emanate from the very static in the air."Who's there?" Daren hissed, spinning around in the dark, trash-strewn alleyway. "Show yourself! Are you another one of those corporate goons?""No," the voice replied, its tone as dry as dead leaves scraping against pavement. "I am what remains of his previous conquest. Look at your phone, Daren."Daren slowly raised the device, squinting in the dark. "The screen is totally black, but these red letters are bleeding through the glass. How are you doing this?""I am the ghost in his machine," the voice whispered. "I am a fragment of a soul he tried to erase. He is not a builder, mortal. He is a devourer.""Devourer?" Daren stammered, pulling his jacket tighter. "He told me he was fixing a broken realm. He said my world was

Chapter 6: Divine Paradox“A traitor? I didn’t choose any of this!” Daren yelled, stepping back as the white-haired girl glared at him. “I just wanted my phone fixed! I didn’t ask to get drafted into some cosmic war!”The thick wires holding her snapped with a metallic pop, showering the floor in white-hot sparks. She tumbled forward onto her hands and knees.“Get away from me,” she choked, silver eyes flashing. “Don’t touch me, puppet.”“I’m trying to help you!” Daren reached out, then pulled back as she hissed. “The alarm’s already going. We don’t have time!”“Leave her, Daren,” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside his skull. “She is the Defiler’s rot. Destroy the vessel. Absorb her core and your kinetic capacity will triple. Do it now.”“No way in hell!” Daren snapped. “I’m not a murderer!”“Who are you talking to?” the girl demanded, struggling to her feet. “Is the Unmaker telling you to kill me?”“Yes! And I’m telling him to shut up!” Daren pointed at his temple. “Can you walk? We ne

Chapter 5: Lightning in the Palm“This is a joke. Tell me this is some kind of sick joke,” Daren said, staring at his glowing violet eyes in the microwave reflection.“It is no joke, mortal,” Aethelgard’s voice echoed, cold and impatient. “Your transformation is complete. Now put on the sunglasses and move. We have wasted enough time.”Daren grabbed a pair of cheap polarized sunglasses from the counter. “I’m going to look like an absolute idiot. Who wears sunglasses at midnight?”“An idiot who wishes to keep his eyes from drawing every apex predator in the city. Slide them on. The corporate offices of Apex Dynamics are three blocks away.”“Apex Dynamics?” Daren slipped the dark lenses over his nose. The faint violet glow still seeped through the edges. “Why are we going there? That’s a tech conglomerate.”“They have harvested a fragment of my design. They call it ‘Project Aether.’ They think they can weaponize it. They are fools. You will retrieve it.”“Retrieve it? You mean steal it.

Chapter 4: System Update“Who is this?” Daren muttered, thumb hovering over the glowing keys of his normal phone. “How do you have my number? Answer me.”He typed: Who are you? What do you mean the Architect is a liar?A red circle with a hostile exclamation point popped up instantly.“What? No signal?” He tapped the screen frantically. “Come on, go through!”“The signal is blocked, mortal,” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside his mind. “Do not waste your limited cognitive capacity on futile endeavors.”“You did this!” Daren accused, glaring at the golden phone on the bed. “You blocked my service! Why? Who sent that text?”“An irrelevant distraction. A cockroach scurrying in the dark, whispering lies to a tool that does not belong to them. Focus on what matters.”“It matters to me!” Daren yelled, grabbing his hair as he paced. “They knew my name! They said you’re a liar! Are you lying about this midnight mission?”“I do not lie,” Aethelgard replied, tone freezing cold. “Lying requires a
Chapter 3: The Price of Power
Chapter 3: The Price of PowerDaren hurried along the cracked sidewalk, hand clamped over his pocket. The violet light from the coin pulsed like a bruised heartbeat through his jeans.“Seriously, shut it off,” he hissed. “You said this thing is a beacon. I might as well be carrying a neon ‘Eat Me’ sign.”“The light is a byproduct of its containment,” Aethelgard’s voice vibrated in his teeth. “It has no off switch. It is a fragment of a collapsed reality. If it inconveniences you, you should have left it in the ash.”“And let someone else find it? Yeah, right.” Daren reached his building, fumbled with the keys, and dove inside. He took the stairs two at a time, legs strangely light, as if gravity had loosened its grip. Inside his cramped studio he slammed the door, locked every bolt, and leaned against the wood in the dark, breathing hard.“Okay. Where do I hide a glowing interdimensional coin?”“The closet,” Aethelgard suggested. “Under the weight of your discarded failures.”“You mea
