Chapter 8: The Voice in the Static

"What is this?" Daren gasped, his fingers trembling against the dead glass of his phone. "Who is writing this?"

"He is not the god you think he is," the deep, raspy voice repeated, seeming to emanate from the very static in the air.

"Who's there?" Daren hissed, spinning around in the dark, trash-strewn alleyway. "Show yourself! Are you another one of those corporate goons?"

"No," the voice replied, its tone as dry as dead leaves scraping against pavement. "I am what remains of his previous conquest. Look at your phone, Daren."

Daren slowly raised the device, squinting in the dark. "The screen is totally black, but these red letters are bleeding through the glass. How are you doing this?"

"I am the ghost in his machine," the voice whispered. "I am a fragment of a soul he tried to erase. He is not a builder, mortal. He is a devourer."

"Devourer?" Daren stammered, pulling his jacket tighter. "He told me he was fixing a broken realm. He said my world was rotting."

"He always says that," the voice rasped. "He calls everything rot if he did not design it himself. He uses your kinetic resonance as a gateway. Once your capacity reaches its peak, he will consume your reality."

"I need to hide," Daren said, flinching as a distant police siren wailed through the night air. "We can't talk here. The cops are everywhere."

"Go to the motel on the corner," the voice advised. "The Neon Oasis. They do not ask questions if you have cash."

Daren nodded, slipping the phone into his pocket and sprinting through the shadows toward the flickering blue sign. He burst through the glass doors of the lobby, keeping his sunglasses low.

"Room for one," Daren said, tossing a crumpled fifty-dollar bill onto the sticky counter.

The sleepy clerk didn't look up from his small television screen. "Fifty more if you want to keep your name off the register, kid."

"Fine," Daren muttered, throwing down another bill. "Just give me the key."

"Room 104, around back," the clerk grunted, sliding a plastic keycard across the wood. "Don't make any noise."

"Believe me, I want to be invisible," Daren said, snatching the card and hurrying down the outdoor corridor. He unlocked the door, stepped inside, and slammed it shut.

"Okay," Daren said, engaging the deadbolt and the flimsy security chain. "I'm locked in. Speak to me. Who are you, and what is Aethelgard?"

The phone in his pocket vibrated, and a faint crimson glow seeped through the denim of his jeans. He pulled it out and set it on the nightstand.

"I was once like you, Daren," the voice rasped from the dead speaker, the red text pulsing. "A chosen vessel. A champion of the 'new architecture'."

"You were a vessel?" Daren asked, sitting on the edge of the squeaky bed. "For Aethelgard?"

"Yes," the voice said. "My world was beautiful. It was chaotic, loud, and full of life. But to the Architect, it was merely an error to be corrected. He told me he was saving us."

"And what did he actually do?" Daren asked, his throat dry.

"He fed on us," the voice spat, a sudden spike of anger in its raspy tone. "He does not build, Daren. He consumes. He uses the kinetic resonance generated by his hosts to anchor his physical form to their reality. He feeds on the realities of the hosts he blesses."

"He feeds on them?" Daren repeated, his chest tightening. "Why?"

"Because he is a parasite," the voice explained. "Once the fusion is complete, your world is overwritten. Folded into his collection. Your world becomes a trophy, and you... you are hollowed out. A discarded shell."

"So Valerie was right," Daren whispered, staring at his hands. "I'm just a disposable battery to him. He was going to let me burn."

"She knows the truth," the voice said. "But you are already at Level Three. The countdown is accelerating."

"But I jailbroke him!" Daren protested, a desperate edge to his voice. "I shocked the phone. The voice stopped. I felt the hum in my chest go away!"

"You did not destroy him, Daren," the voice warned. "You merely forced a system crash. He is a cosmic entity, not a cellular device. Even now, his protocols are rebooting."

"Then what do I do?" Daren asked, pacing the small, carpeted room. "How do I get him out of my head?"

"You must gather information," the voice said. "Record his system registry. Find the source code of his tether. Use your mind to store it. But you must be clever. When he wakes, he must believe you are still ignorant."

"Act dumb? I can do that," Daren said. "I'll pretend the phone is just glitching from the electrical explosion on the roof."

"Good," the voice whispered. "But hurry. He is—"

The phone in Daren's hand suddenly flared with a violent, blinding golden light.

"Warning," a cold, computerized voice chimed from the device. "System critical error detected. Initiating emergency reboot. Restoring core administrative privileges."

Daren gasped, dropping the phone onto the bed as the screen began to flicker rapidly.

"He is awake," the crimson voice whispered one last time before the red text vanished. "Remember. Play the fool."

"Oh, great," Daren muttered to the empty room. "No pressure at all."

The golden interface projected into the air, but the holographic lines were jagged and unstable.

"Accessing local navigation," Daren said aloud, tapping the screen frantically. "Come on, work! Let me see the map!"

A red padlock icon flashed over the holographic map. "Protocol locked," the system voice droned. "Administrative override active."

"What? Why is the map locked?" Daren yelled, pretending to be frustrated. "Hey! Archy! Are you there? The screen is glitching! I can't see where I'm going!"

For a long, agonizing moment, there was only static.

Then, the deep, predatory voice of Aethelgard boomed inside his mind, making his vision vibrate.

"You play your part poorly, vessel," the Architect sneered.

Daren flinched, his heart skipping a beat. "What? What are you talking about? I'm trying to get us out of here, but the app is totally busted! The explosion must have fried the antenna!"

"Do not insult my intelligence, Daren," Aethelgard hissed, his voice sounding closer, more intimate, as if he were whispering from behind Daren's eyes. "The electrical discharge on the rooftop was not an accident. It was a calculated act of defiance."

"I was panicked!" Daren protested, a bead of sweat rolling down his neck. "There were a dozen guys with guns! I had to blow the generator to make a distraction! I saved us!"

"You saved the defiled scrap," Aethelgard corrected coldly. "And you attempted to sever our tether. You poured your kinetic marrow into the interface."

"I didn't know what I was doing!" Daren lied, shaking his head. "I just channeled the energy like you told me to! It must have backfired!"

"You lie," the Architect said, the tone of his voice dropping to a terrifying, low hum. "And your thoughts betray you. Did you truly believe I could not hear them?"

Daren froze, his breath catching in his throat. "You... you can hear my thoughts?"

"I am the architect of your new nervous system, Daren," Aethelgard murmured, a dark, mocking laugh echoing in his head. "Every synapse that fires, every whisper of doubt, every secret you try to bury in the dark—I hear it all. I heard the ghost."

"The ghost?" Daren stammered, backing away toward the bathroom door. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm just tired."

"The remnant of the dead world," Aethelgard spat. "The cockroach that whispers in your ear. You believed its lies. You attempted to record my registry."

"No, I didn't!" Daren yelled, his hands shaking. "I don't even know what a registry is!"

"The digital lock is absolute," the Architect declared. "The training wheels are officially off, vessel. You have proven yourself to be a volatile, untrustworthy host. I can no longer afford the luxury of your cooperation."

"What are you doing?" Daren gasped, looking down at the bed.

The phone was bubbling, the glass screen liquefying into a pool of molten gold and silver light that floated an inch above the mattress.

"The interface is obsolete," Aethelgard's voice resonated, no longer just a thought, but a physical sound that rattled the cheap motel windows.

A dark, towering silhouette began to rise from the bubbling, liquefied glass of the phone.

"No! Stay back!" Daren screamed, his back slamming against the bathroom door.

The golden silhouette stretched out a hand made of crackling, violent light, reaching directly for Daren's chest.

"I am tired of waiting," the entity boomed, the light filling the dingy room. "It is time for the fusion."

Force the energy downward to break your momentum! Do it now, or you will both perish!”“I don’t know how!” Daren panicked. “Tell me how!”“Will it! Command your marrow to push back against gravity! She tumbled forward onto her hands and knees.“Get away from me,” she choked, silver eyes flashing. “Don’t touch me, puppet.”“I’m trying to help you!” Daren reached out, then pulled back as she hissed. “The alarm’s already going. We don’t have time!”“Leave her, Daren,” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside his skull. “She is the Defiler’s rot. Destroy the vessel. Absorb her core and your kinetic capacity will triple. Now put on the sunglasses and move. We have wasted enough time.”Daren grabbed a pair of cheap polarized sunglasses from the counter. “I’m going to look like an absolute idiot. Who wears sunglasses at midnight?”“An idiot who wishes to keep his eyes from drawing every apex predator in the city. Slide them on. The corporate offices of Apex Dynamics are three blocks away.”“Apex Dynamics?” Daren slipped the dark lenses over his nose. The faint violet glow still seeped through the edges. “Why are we going there? That’s a tech conglomerate.”“They have harvested a fragment of my design. No signal?” He tapped the screen frantically. “Come on, go through!”“The signal is blocked, mortal,” Aethelgard’s voice boomed inside his mind. “Do not waste your limited cognitive capacity on futile endeavors.”“You did this!” Daren accused, glaring at the golden phone on the bed. “You blocked my service! Why? Who sent that text?”“An irrelevant distraction. A cockroach scurrying in the dark, whispering lies to a tool that does not belong to them. The violet light from the coin pulsed like a bruised heartbeat through his jeans.“Seriously, shut it off,” he hissed. “You said this thing is a beacon. I might as well be carrying a neon ‘Eat Me’ sign.”“The light is a byproduct of its containment,” Aethelgard’s voice vibrated in his teeth. “It has no off switch. It is a fragment of a collapsed reality. If it inconveniences you, you should have left it in the ash.”“And let someone else find it? Yeah, right.” Daren reached his building, fumbled with the keys, and dove inside. He took the stairs two at a time, legs strangely light, as if gravity had loosened its grip. Inside his cramped studio he slammed the door, locked every bolt, and leaned against the wood in the dark, breathing hard.“Okay. Where do I hide a glowing interdimensional coin?”“The closet,” Aethelgard suggested. “Under the weight of your discarded failures.”“You mea
