The fall felt like dropping through an endless sea of cold glass.
I kept my hand locked around Aminata's wrist, holding on with every ounce of strength I had left while the silver pen in my other hand burned like hot iron. The bright glowing portal we had jumped through closed behind us with a loud crack, cutting off Master Vance's office and the crumbling platform of Sector 4 entirely.
Then, the wind stopped.
We hit the ground hard, rolling across a smooth, endless floor made of pure, shining white light.
I pushed myself up to my hands and knees, coughing as a cloud of fine white dust settled around us. My arms ached, and my shins throbbed where the heavy chain had slammed against them back in the office, but the pain felt distant. I looked down at my hand. The silver pen was still there, its tip pulsing with a steady, quiet light.
"Are you okay?" I asked, looking over at Aminata.
She was already sitting up, brushing a speck of dust off her black tactical jacket. She looked around the new space with sharp, calculating eyes, her expression completely calm.
"I've been better," Aminata said, her voice steady and cool. She reached down, checking the charge on her crystal gun before looking up at the horizon. "Where did the pen bring us? This isn't Sector 4, and it isn't the Senior Editor's office."
I stood up slowly, looking around. There were no walls, no ceilings, and no neon skies. We were standing on an endless, glowing white platform that stretched out into a boundless horizon. Above us, instead of clouds or giant red eyes, the sky was filled with millions of floating lines of text, moving back and forth like glowing rivers of light.
"It's the space between the books," I realized, tightening my grip on the silver pen. "The place where stories go before they are published."
"Which means we are completely unprotected," a deep voice echoed from the shadows behind us.
We both spun around.
Stepping out from behind a towering column of floating letters was Chibuzo.
My heart jumped into my throat. The giant enforcer looked worse than before; his chrome plating was cracked down the left side, and black oil leaked from his shoulder joint, but his massive fists were clenched and ready for a fight. He had managed to follow us through the portal before it closed.
"How did you get here?" I demanded, holding the silver pen out in front of me like a sword.
"A core enforcer doesn't need a portal," Chibuzo said, taking a slow, heavy step forward. The floor shook beneath his boots. "We are tied directly to the platform's core system. Wherever you run, the system finds you. Master Vance sent a new patch through my backup server the second you jumped."
Aminata stepped beside me, raising her crystal gun with a cold smile. "Your boss isn't here to save you this time, big guy. And you don't have your guards."
"I don't need guards to crush a couple of stray glitches," Chibuzo growled.
He didn't wait. He lunged forward with terrifying speed, his chrome knuckles raised high, aiming a heavy punch straight at my face.
I didn't try to dodge. I raised the silver pen and drew a sharp line across the air. A wall of dark ink flashed into existence, but Chibuzo smashed right through it with a single brutal blow of his fist, the shockwave sending glass-like shards of ink flying in every direction.
He grabbed me by the jacket before I could step back, lifting me off my feet with one arm and slamming me down hard against the glowing white floor.
Air rushed out of my lungs in a sharp gasp. The silver pen slipped from my fingers, sliding across the smooth surface just out of reach.
"Kofi!" Aminata shouted.
She pulled the trigger of her crystal gun. A blinding beam of light struck Chibuzo squarely in the chest. The giant enforcer staggered back a step, letting out a roar of anger, but the shot didn't stop him. He turned his red optics toward her and lunged, swatting her across the face with the back of his hand and sending her tumbling hard across the floor.
I struggled to breathe, my ribs aching fiercely as Chibuzo stepped over me, raising a massive chrome fist to finish the job.
"End of the story, kid," Chibuzo said, his voice cold and final.
I forced my hand out across the floor, my fingers stretching as far as they could go. I couldn't reach the silver pen. The glowing metal was an inch out of my grasp. My vision began to blur around the edges as the weight of his massive frame pressed down on the air in the room.
Then, something strange happened.
The silver pen on the floor didn't just sit there. The light inside it flared up, pulsing to the rhythm of my own heartbeat. It recognized me. Not as a character, not as a glitch, but as the one holding the ink.
With a sharp snap, the pen flew off the ground into my hand.
I didn't hesitate. I rolled to the side, gripped the silver pen with both hands, and drove the glowing tip straight up into Chibuzo's chest plate.
A blinding wave of white light and dark ink erupted from the point of impact, tearing through the enforcer's core system. Chibuzo froze, his eyes widening as the mechanical hum inside his chest sputtered and died. He collapsed backward onto the floor, his chrome plating going completely dark.
I lay there panting, chest heaving, staring up at the endless rivers of text in the sky.
Aminata crawled over to my side, wincing as she wiped a streak of blood from her cheek. She looked down at the silver pen in my hand, then out across the endless white horizon.
"We beat the enforcer," Aminata said softly. "Now what?"
"Now we go to the main publishing board," I said, getting slowly to my feet and holding the pen high. "And we find out who's really running the platform."
Before she could answer, the ground beneath us trembled.
The rivers of text in the sky stopped moving. Every single line of glowing letters turned bright red, spelling out a message that covered the entire horizon in giant, flashing words.

Right in front of us, the white floor split wide open.
A massive, glowing platform rose up from the gap, carrying a single chair made of pure steel. And sitting in that chair was a figure wearing a heavy golden crown, holding a book that was already glowing with our exact names on the cover.

My breath came fast and heavy, the silver pen gripped so tight in my hand that my knuckles had turned completely white."Kofi!" Aminata called out, rushing over with her crystal gun still firmly in hand. "Look at the screen."I followed her gaze up toward the massive sky above the chamber. The red warning alarms had vanished entirely. The terrifying purge countdown was gone, replaced by a clean, brilliant blue sky that stretched out endlessly across the digital horizon. Millions of floating story islands drifted peacefully i
The Last Page
The golden words on the page dissolved into a dark, bleeding red, forming a new sentence that made my stomach drop.THE CONTRACT IS VALID, BUT THE STORY DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU.I gripped the silver pen tight, staring at the book as the white chamber began to tremble. Aminata stepped up beside me, her crystal gun raised and locked on the blank space above the altar."What does that mean, Kofi?" Aminata asked, her voice calm even as the floor beneath us started to fracture. "We deleted the copy. We secured the system update."Before I could answer, the air above the massive book tore wide open.A pair of hands reached through the tear, pulling the digital fabric apart to reveal a figure stepping out of the shadows. It was not a
The Final Rewrite
The digital void rushed past us with a terrifying roar, pulling Aminata and me downward through endless layers of flashing text and broken server code.I clutched the silver pen tight in my palm, watching the dark cosmic ink pulse rapidly against my skin as the wind tore at my jacket. The True Owner
The golden contract window flashed a blinding crimson red, and the word UNRESTRICTED burned away into ash right before our eyes.I froze, the silver pen heavy in my hand as the platform beneath our feet began to vibrate violently. The blue sky above Sector Prime turned pitch black in a single second, replaced by millions of jagged red lines of computer code that wrapped around the floating islands like giant spider webs."What is happening?" Marcus shouted over the rising roar of the wind, grabbing his rifle as the glass platform cracked beneath his boots."The system didn't belong to the board, and it didn't belong to Sterling or the Chief Editor," Director Jade said, his face draining of all color as he stared up at the crimson sky. "They were just local managers renting server space. Someone else built the core d

Beside me, Aminata and Marcus rolled onto the glass, gasping for air, while Director Jade landed neatly on his feet like he owned the place."Where is she?" Marcus asked, raising his rifle and scanning the empty horizon around us."She's still in the core system," Jade answered, brushing a speck of dust off his immaculate suit jacket. "The Chief Editor cannot delete us here. This is the raw publishing draft level, the place where every contract on the platform is born before it gets locked behind paywalls and coin walls."Before
The Source Room
The golden portal spat us out onto a freezing steel floor, and my breath fogged up the air instantly.I scrambled up, coughing from the sudden cold, and gripped the silver pen tight in my hand. The dark cosmic ink pulsed against my skin, warm and steady. Beside me, Marcus groaned, dragging himself out of a heap of discarded digital wires, while Aminata was already on her feet, her crystal gun raised and sweeping the perimeter."Where are we now?" Marcus asked, rubbing his shoulder as he looked around the room. There were no glowing libraries or glass towers here. We were standing inside a massive, circular vault built of thick, black iron plates. Giant cables hung from the ceiling like thick black snakes, pumping blue light into the floor. In the very center of the room sat a single, raised stone altar holding an op
