The Family Name

The name echoed off the damp tunnel walls like a gunshot.

Vance.

I stared at the man in the expensive dark coat, my hand tightening around the silver pen until my knuckles turned white. Master Vance had claimed that last name in Sector 4, and Director Jade had used it to lock down the archive. Now, standing right in the middle of the mafia sub-levels of Sector 1, another man was wearing the same family banner like a crown.

"You share a surname with the editors who wrote our lives," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Are you another manager playing God with character files?"

Victor Vance stepped closer, the neon light from the railway sign catching the cold amusement in his dark eyes. He didn't look like an enforcer or a corporate drone; he carried the quiet, heavy authority of someone who owned every coin circulating through the underground market.

"Editors write the rules," Victor answered, his tone smooth and casual. "Families write the history. Master Vance was just a regional clerk managing the lower sectors. Director Jade was a desk jockey playing with local code. But me? I built the financial engine that keeps this entire platform running."

Beside me, Aminata shifted her weight, her crystal gun raised and locked steadily on Victor's chest. Her face was completely unreadable, her eyes calculating every possible exit in the dark tunnel.

"He isn't here to chat, Kofi," Aminata said, her voice low and even. "Look at his ring."

I glanced down at Victor's right hand. Resting on his finger was a heavy silver ring carved with the exact same symbol that had burned across the sky in Sector 4—the mark of the platform's core authority.

"You control the coin flow for the expansion wars," I realized, stepping forward despite the warning bells in my head. "You're the one funding Evelyn's enforcers."

Victor smiled, though there was no warmth in it. "Funding is such a harsh word. Let's call it a business investment. Every time a reader pays coins to unlock a chapter in Sector 1, a percentage goes directly into my vault. And right now, two rogue characters carrying an unauthorized silver pen are causing a major drop in my daily revenue."

He snapped his fingers.

Instantly, the shadows at both ends of the tunnel came alive. Dozens of armed mafia guards stepped out from the darkness, their tactical weapons raised and aimed straight at our heads, cutting off any hope of escape.

"You can't delete us with an ordinary mob hit," I warned, lifting the silver pen so the light caught the metal. "This pen destroyed the main archive."

"I don't plan on deleting you," Victor replied, taking another slow step forward. "Deletion is a waste of good potential. Your fight against the system, your refusal to follow the plot lines, your raw rebellion—do you have any idea how many coins readers would pay to unlock that kind of drama?"

He stopped just a few feet away, his gaze locking onto mine with chilling intensity.

"I am offering you a real contract, Kofi," Victor continued, his voice dropping into a persuasive rhythm. "Join my syndicate. Become the lead protagonist of Sector 1. You get wealth, power, and total control over your own territory. All you have to do is hand over the pen and let your sister remain under my management."

Aminata stiffened instantly. "Don't even think about it."

I looked over at her, then back at Victor. A cold anger rose in my chest, burning hotter than the ink on my arm. They always thought we were for sale. They always thought a fancy title or a bigger sector could buy our loyalty after everything they had put us through.

"I spent my whole life living in a rigged story built on lies," I said, my voice steady and clear. "I'm not trading one cage for another."

Victor's smile vanished completely. The dark, calculating look in his eyes replaced all the false warmth in a fraction of a second.

"A disappointing choice," Victor said, taking a step back and raising his hand. "Kill the girl. Keep the boy alive until I extract the pen code."

The mafia guards didn't hesitate.

Before Victor's hand could fall, Aminata moved with terrifying speed. She didn't aim at the guards; she fired her crystal gun straight at the overhead electrical grid, shattering a massive neon conduit with a blinding explosion of white sparks.

The tunnel plunged into pitch-black darkness.

"Grab my hand!" Aminata shouted through the noise of the exploding grid.

I lunged through the smoke, my fingers closing around her jacket just as a dozen weapons opened fire into the dark space where we had been standing. Energy bolts scorched the metal floor, filling the air with the sharp smell of ozone and burning dust.

Using the confusion, we sprinted blindly down the railway tracks toward the abandoned transport cart.

"They're heading for the rail line!" Victor's voice cut through the dark, sharp and furious. "Block the tunnel!"

Heavy metal blast doors dropped down from the ceiling at the far end of the railway, slamming into the tracks with a deafening crash just twenty yards ahead of us, cutting off our only way out.

I skidded to a halt, the metal wheels of the transport cart screeching against the rails. Aminata raised her crystal gun, firing rapid beams at the thick steel doors, but the shots only left glowing black scorch marks on the metal.

Footsteps echoed fast behind us in the dark. The mafia guards were closing in, and the blast doors weren't going to budge.

"Kofi," Aminata said, her voice dropping into a rare, quiet tone as she turned to face me, watching the shadows close in around us. "If this is the chapter where the characters run out of pages, I just want you to know..."

Before she could finish, the ground beneath our feet gave way with a violent groan, dropping us both into a dark, hidden shaft deep beneath the tracks.

The drop knocked the breath completely out of my lungs. We hit a steep metal slide that pitched us downward into pitch-black space, tumbling over each other before crashing hard onto a cold, hard floor. • The Neon Warzone

The air in Sector 1 tasted like burnt copper and ozone. We hit the ground rolling across a slick metal highway, dodging three high-speed armored transport trucks that blared their horns as they flew past us. Sparks showered the tarmac, illuminating the towering skyscrapers that stretched up into an artificial red sky. This wasn't the quiet, controlled environment of Sector 4 or the empty white expanse of the archive. This was a living, breathing warzone where rival factions fought every single second for coin control and territorial dominance."Keep moving!" Aminata shouted over the roaring traffic. She pulled me up by the collar of my jacket, dragging me behind the thick concrete barrier of an elevated transit platform just as a volley of plasma fire scorched the space we had occupied a second earlier.<

  • The Price of the Contract

The green contract floated in the air, glowing with bright, demanding light right in front of my face.Senior Vice President Evelyn stood with her hands folded neatly in front of her black suit, her eyes fixed on me with a cool, testing expression. She didn't look like an editor reviewing a story; she looked like a boss buying up a failing company just to strip it for parts."Sector 1," I said, repeating her words slowly. "What is waiting for us there?""Power," Evelyn answered, taking a step closer. "Sector 1 is the origin point of every high-tier story on this platform. Billionaire drama, mafia rings, alpha pack territories, and system apocalypse zones. Right now, without a ruling authority, all the factions are tearing each other apart to seize the main server. If you sign this contract, you take control of the expansion wars. If you refuse, the system wipes your characters and resets the entire platform by midnight."Beside me, Aminata stepped forward

The smell of burning paper filled the air. The giant creature did not wait to let us recover; it slammed its heavy iron fists against the floor, sending jagged cracks racing toward our feet like spiderwebs of red light."Get up!" Aminata shouted, rolling over and firing three quick beams from her crystal gun straight into the beast's central optics. The shots hit their mark with a loud crack, but the creature barely flinched. Instead, a wall of iron plates shifted across its chest, revealing a long, glowing slot that glowed with a cruel, golden light. A thick stack of papers flew out of the slot, spinning through the air like razor-sharp cards, aiming straight for our throats.I raised the silver pen in my right hand, letting
