The drop knocked the breath completely out of my lungs.

We hit a steep metal slide that pitched us downward into pitch-black space, tumbling over each other before crashing hard onto a cold, hard floor. I rolled twice, groaning as my shoulder smacked against a concrete pillar. Above us, the hidden shaft clicked shut with a heavy mechanical seal, cutting off the sound of Victor Vance and his mafia guards completely.

"Are you in one piece?" Aminata asked, pushing herself up from the dusty floor.

She wasn't even wincing. While I was busy catching my breath, her eyes were already scanning our new surroundings, tracking every shadow and metal beam with cool focus.

"I think so," I said, rubbing my sore shoulder and standing up. "Where did this drop lead us?"

I looked around. We weren't in a subway tunnel or a prison cell. We were standing inside a massive, dimly lit circular room lined with hundreds of glass display cases. Inside each case sat a glowing book with a familiar title, bound in rich leather and tagged with different sector numbers.

"It's an archive sub-level," Aminata said, walking slowly toward one of the central display cases. "Not for management or editors. This is where Victor Vance stores his underground contracts. The books he uses to control the mafia syndicates in Sector 1."

I stepped up beside her, looking closely at the book glowing inside the glass case in front of us. The title written on the spine read The Syndicate's Vow.

"He's running a black-market publishing ring right beneath the platform's nose," I realized, tightening my grip on the silver pen. "He doesn't just fund the expansion wars. He writes unauthorized plots to manipulate the faction leaders and steal their coin revenue."

"Which means," Aminata said, a sharp, calculating smile forming on her lips, "we have all the leverage we need to break his syndicate from the inside out."

Before I could answer, a loud, heavy mechanical thud echoed through the room.

The main iron door on the far side of the chamber hissed open, sliding back into the concrete wall with a sharp screech of metal. Victor Vance walked in alone, his dark wool coat brushing against his knees, his hands tucked casually into his pockets. He didn't look surprised to see us standing in his private vault. In fact, he looked pleased, like a hunter watching two rabbits run right into a closed trap.

"I was wondering when you would find my backup vault," Victor said, his smooth voice echoing off the concrete walls. "It takes a very specific kind of stubbornness to bypass three layers of security just to end up in a dead end."

I stepped in front of Aminata, holding the silver pen up. "This isn't a dead end, Victor. It's where your business ends."

Victor laughed softly, shaking his head. "You still don't understand how this world works, Kofi. You think holding that little pen makes you an author. But in Sector 1, power doesn't belong to the person holding the pen. It belongs to the person who owns the vault."

He snapped his fingers.

The glass display cases around the room suddenly flashed with blinding red light. The covers of the hundreds of books inside popped open automatically, and thick streams of red text poured out like liquid fire, forming a tight, inescapable cage of glowing code around us.

"You can't write your way out of a closed loop," Victor said, taking another calm step forward. "Every character in this room is bound to my contracts. Including you."

I felt a sudden, heavy pressure crush down on my chest. The dark cosmic ink beneath my skin began to freeze, locking up my muscles and making it impossible to raise my arm. Beside me, Aminata gasped, her knees buckling as the red code wrapped around her ankles like steel chains.

"Kofi..." she choked out, fighting against the heavy pressure with every ounce of her strength.

Victor stopped just a few feet away, looking down at us with absolute coldness in his eyes. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, glowing black remote control.

"I am going to rewrite your choices, Kofi," Victor said, his voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous tone. "You will hand over the silver pen, and your sister will take her place as my primary security enforcer. And the best part? Neither of you will remember ever trying to fight back."

He pressed the central button on the remote.

A sharp bolt of red energy shot out from the floor, striking the silver pen in my hand. The metal burned ice-cold, and the white light at the tip flickered and died. My vision blurred, the memories of Sector 4, the archive, and our escape starting to slip away like smoke in the wind.

No, I told myself, fighting through the thick fog pressing down on my brain. I didn't come this far to become someone else's character.

With one last surge of raw defiance, I ignored the frozen pain in my arm and slammed the dead silver pen down hard against the concrete floor.

The heavy red glow around us vanished instantly, replaced by a thick, swirling wave of true power that filled the entire underground vault.Victor Vance stumbled backward, dropping his black remote as his expensive shoes slid across the broken glass. His calm, smug expression finally cracked into pure panic."That's impossible!" Victor shouted over the roaring sound of breaking code. "You were locked in a closed narrative loop! • The Family Name

The name echoed off the damp tunnel walls like a gunshot.Vance.I stared at the man in the expensive dark coat, my hand tightening around the silver pen until my knuckles turned white. Master Vance had claimed that last name in Sector 4, and Director Jade had used it to lock down the archive. Now, standing right in the middle of the mafia sub-levels of Sector 1, another man was wearing the same family banner like a crown."You share a surname with the editors who wrote our lives," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Are you another manager playing God with character files?"Victor Vance stepped closer, the neon light from the railway sign catching the cold amusement in his dark eyes. He didn't look like an enforcer or a corporate drone; he car

  • The Neon Warzone

The air in Sector 1 tasted like burnt copper and ozone. We hit the ground rolling across a slick metal highway, dodging three high-speed armored transport trucks that blared their horns as they flew past us. Sparks showered the tarmac, illuminating the towering skyscrapers that stretched up into an artificial red sky. This wasn't the quiet, controlled environment of Sector 4 or the empty white expanse of the archive. This was a living, breathing warzone where rival factions fought every single second for coin control and territorial dominance."Keep moving!" Aminata shouted over the roaring traffic. She pulled me up by the collar of my jacket, dragging me behind the thick concrete barrier of an elevated transit platform just as a volley of plasma fire scorched the space we had occupied a second earlier.<

  • The Price of the Contract

The green contract floated in the air, glowing with bright, demanding light right in front of my face.Senior Vice President Evelyn stood with her hands folded neatly in front of her black suit, her eyes fixed on me with a cool, testing expression. She didn't look like an editor reviewing a story; she looked like a boss buying up a failing company just to strip it for parts."Sector 1," I said, repeating her words slowly. "What is waiting for us there?""Power," Evelyn answered, taking a step closer. "Sector 1 is the origin point of every high-tier story on this platform. Billionaire drama, mafia rings, alpha pack territories, and system apocalypse zones. Right now, without a ruling authority, all the factions are tearing each other apart to seize the main server. If you sign this contract, you take control of the expansion wars. If you refuse, the system wipes your characters and resets the entire platform by midnight."Beside me, Aminata stepped forward

The mechanical beast opened its massive jaws, and a sheet of blinding fire shot straight toward us across the white floor.I grabbed Aminata by the shoulder and threw us both sideways just as the heat scorched the ground where we had been standing a second before. The smell of burning paper filled the air. The giant creature did not wait to let us recover; it slammed its heavy iron fists against the floor, sending jagged cracks racing toward our feet like spiderwebs of red light."Get up!" Aminata shouted, rolling over and firing three quick beams from her crystal gun straight into the beast's central optics. The shots hit their mark with a loud crack, but the creature barely flinched. Instead, a wall of iron plates shifted across its chest, revealing a long, glowing slot that glowed with a cruel, golden light. A thick stack of papers flew out of the slot, spinning through the air like razor-sharp cards, aiming straight for our throats.I raised the silver pen in my right hand, letting
