"Die, you arrogant piece of trash!" Drake screamed, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unbridled fury as he plummeted from the VIP balcony.
The legendary broadsword in his hands roared with golden-white flames, slicing through the air like a falling star, aimed directly at Zyren’s neck.
"Not on my watch, you oversized tin can!" Lyra shouted, her voice cutting through the panic of the crowd.
She slammed her hand onto her hovering grimoire. The pages spun at blinding speed, glowing with a brilliant, freezing blue light.
"Glacial Serpent, rise! Block him!" Lyra bellowed.
A massive, roaring eastern dragon made of solid, crystalline ice erupted from a magic circle on the sand, shooting upward to meet Drake’s descent.
BOOM!
The collision was deafening. The flaming broadsword slammed directly into the snout of the ice serpent. A massive shockwave of steam, fire, and shattered ice exploded outward, instantly obscuring the entire arena floor in a dense, blinding fog of white mist and kicking up a suffocating cloud of red sand.
"Whoa!" Zyren yelled, though he managed to quickly lower his pitch to a casual, bored drawl. "An adequate shield, Lyra. Though I had things completely under control."
Internally, Zyren was hyperventilating so hard he thought his ribs might crack. Oh my god! That was a literal meteor strike! If that ice snake hadn't spawned, my head would currently be a permanent fixture on the stadium ceiling!
"Adequate?" Lyra gasped, her voice sounding slightly strained through the thick fog. She grabbed his hand, her slender fingers locking tightly with his. "I just saved your life, you arrogant jerk! Now stop posing and run!"
"Run?" Zyren repeated, letting himself be pulled along while maintaining his cool facade. "A god does not run, Lyra. It is merely a... strategic relocation."
"Sure, whatever helps your massive ego!" Lyra huffed as she dragged him through the swirling white mist. "But we need to relocate now! Drake’s entire guild is going to lock down the arena exits!"
"Hey! Where are they?!" Drake’s furious voice boomed through the fog behind them, accompanied by the heavy clanking of his armor. "Find them! Block the gates! I want that classless bastard’s head on a spike!"
"This way!" Lyra whispered, pulling Zyren toward a narrow player-only exit tunnel.
As they sprinted out of the arena and into the chaotic, stone-paved streets of the city, Zyren’s legs immediately began to scream in agony.
Oh, right, Zyren realized, his chest heaving as he struggled to keep up with Lyra's agile, fast-paced strides. I have Level One stats. Ten points of strength. Zero agility. Running at full sprint is literally a near-death experience for my pathetic body!
"Lyra..." Zyren wheezed, trying to sound deep and mysterious. "We... must not... show haste. It... ruins the mystique."
"Are you serious right now?" Lyra laughed breathlessly, looking back at him with a mixture of sheer amusement and exasperation. "We have fifty heavily armed guards chasing us, and you're worried about your mystique? You are an absolute maniac, Zyren!"
"It’s called having standards," Zyren panted, his lungs burning like they were filled with hot coals.
"Halt! There they are!" a guard screamed from the end of the alleyway.
Three Vanguard soldiers equipped with heavy iron shields and glowing staves charged toward them.
"I’ll handle this," Zyren said, taking a deep breath to prepare another bluff.
"No, you don’t!" Lyra interjected, pulling him behind her. "You’ve done enough showing off today, Master. Let me handle the heavy lifting. Frost Wall!"
She slammed her hands against the stone walls of the narrow alley. A massive, jagged barrier of solid ice surged upward from the cobblestones, completely blocking the path and sealing the chasing soldiers on the other side.
BANG! BANG!
The guards slammed against the thick ice, their muffled curses echoing through the barrier.
"Nice trick," Zyren gasped, leaning heavily against the brick wall of the alley, pretending he was just casually observing her technique. "You’re really earning that promotion, assistant."
"Oh, is that a promise?" Lyra teased, her cheeks flushed a lovely shade of pink from the physical exertion. She stepped closer, her chest pressing lightly against his arm as she looked up at him through her thick eyelashes. "Because I'm going to hold you to that. But first, we need to get out of Floor One entirely."
"And where do you suggest we go?" Zyren asked, his heart doing a rapid-fire tap-dance against his ribs partly from the running, and partly from her proximity. "The entire floor is Vanguard territory."
"The Floor Two portal," Lyra said, her eyes shining with determination. "It’s located in the high-level sector just outside the city gates. Drake won't dare follow us there with a full army. The monsters on Floor Two are too hostile, and the mist makes coordination impossible."
"Lead the way," Zyren rumbled, trying to hide the fact that his knees were shaking like wet cardboard.
They sprinted through the remaining back alleys, dodging patrol after patrol. Lyra used her remaining mana to summon temporary barriers and small stone decoys, successfully throwing off the Vanguard scouts.
Finally, they reached a towering, ancient stone archway nestled in a secluded ravine just outside the city walls. The portal was swirling with a thick, ominous grey mist that seemed to swallow the light.
"This is it," Lyra said, pausing at the threshold. She turned to him, her emerald eyes filled with a sudden, soft vulnerability. "Once we cross over, we’re in a hazardous zone. The environmental debuffs are brutal. Are you ready?"
"I am always ready," Zyren lied smoothly, offering her his hand. "With me, you have nothing to fear."
"I know," she whispered, her fingers wrapping tightly around his. "Let's go."
They stepped together into the grey mist.
The transition was instantaneous. The warm daylight of Floor One vanished, replaced by a freezing, heavy darkness. The air was thick with a damp, bone-chilling fog that reduced their visibility to only a few feet. Crumbling, moss-covered obsidian ruins stretched out into the gloom like decaying teeth.
"Wow," Lyra whispered, her body shivering slightly. "The mana pressure here is... intense."
Suddenly, Zyren’s chest erupted in a violent, agonizing spasm.
“SYSTEM WARNING,” a glitching, metallic voice echoed in his mind. “Divine resonance detected. Ancient ruins of Floor Two triggering dormant legacy files. Integration rate increasing: Zero point one percent. Warning: Mortal vessel experiencing extreme spiritual overload.”
"Ah!" Zyren gasped, his hand flying to his chest.
His eyes suddenly flared with a brilliant, unstable gold light. The sheer, crushing weight of the divine authority in his veins felt like liquid nitrogen, freezing him from the inside out while his heart hammered in a desperate attempt to survive. His knees buckled, and he collapsed against a massive, crumbling stone wall, clutching his head as chaotic, fragmented memories flooded his brain.
He saw massive golden towers falling into a sea of fire. He heard the deafening, tragic screams of majestic beings being torn apart by shadow. He saw a great, white-winged entity holding a golden spear, laughing as the world burned.
"Zyren!" Lyra screamed, throwing herself down beside him. She grabbed his face, her hands trembling. "Zyren, talk to me! What’s happening? Is it the red shard? Your eyes... they’re glowing so bright!"
"It’s... nothing," Zyren choked out, his teeth chattering violently. "Just... a minor headache."
"A minor headache doesn't make your eyes look like burning suns!" Lyra cried, her voice cracking with pure, desperate panic. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling his head tightly against her soft chest, trying to share her warmth. "Oh god, you’re freezing! You’re literally like ice! Zyren, please, stay with me!"
"I'm... fine," Zyren whispered, his face buried in the soft, sweet-scented fabric of her camisole. The physical contact was the only thing keeping him grounded, her natural warmth slowly fighting back the freezing divine energy. "Just... hold me."
"I’ve got you," she whispered, her tears warm against his temple. "I’m not letting go."
Suddenly, the sound of heavy footsteps and clanking armor echoed through the thick fog nearby.
"Search the perimeter!" a Vanguard scout shouted from the darkness. "They couldn't have gone far! The portal signature was activated only a minute ago!"
"Damn it," Lyra hissed, her eyes widening in terror. "They followed us through the portal."
"I will... obliterate them," Zyren grunted, trying to stand up, though he could barely even move his fingers.
"No, you won't," Lyra whispered, pushing him gently back down against the wall. "Your body is fighting itself right now. I have just enough mana for one last defensive spell."
She closed her eyes, her face pale with exhaustion. "’Veil of the Unseen’."
With a soft hum, a shimmering, translucent dome of dark, purple-grey mist erupted around them, perfectly blending into the surrounding fog and the shadows of the ancient ruins.
"Shh," Lyra whispered, pressing her body completely flush against his. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him so close there wasn't a single millimeter of space between them. Her hands gently cupped his jaw, her lips hovering mere inches from his. "Don't make a sound. Don't even breathe."
The physical intimacy was overwhelming. Zyren’s heart was pounding a frantic rhythm against her chest, and he could feel her rapid, shallow breaths warm against his lips. The scent of jasmine and rain wafted over him, a dizzying, intoxicating contrast to the freezing, terrifying reality of their situation.
Two Vanguard scouts stepped out of the fog, stopping just five feet away from their hidden alcove.
"See anything?" one of the scouts asked, holding up a glowing magical lantern.
"Nothing but mist and old rocks," the second guard grumbled, shivering. "This place gives me the creeps. Let’s head back to the main path before a high-level wraith decides to eat our souls."
"Yeah, good call. Let's move."
As the footsteps of the guards faded back into the dark mist, Lyra let out a long, shaky breath. She didn't move away, though. Instead, she leaned her head against Zyren’s shoulder, her body trembling slightly from exhaustion.
"That was... too close," she murmured, her voice husky.
"You did perfectly," Zyren whispered, his voice deep and warm as the spiritual backlash slowly began to recede, leaving him weak but functional. He gently wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her close. "My assistant is proving to be quite indispensable."
"I told you," Lyra giggled softly, leaning up to press a sweet, lingering kiss to his cheek. "I’m the best partner you’ll ever find."
Zyren smiled, but as he relaxed his head against the crumbling stone wall behind them, the mist in the alcove cleared slightly.
A faint, golden-white glow caught his eye.
He turned his head, his breath catching in his throat.
The wall they were leaning against wasn't just a random ruin. It was a massive, ancient mural, carved deep into the dark obsidian stone.
Zyren’s golden eyes focused on the carved image.
It depicted a towering, colossal black tower that stretched up into a stormy sky. Chained to the sides of the tower were five majestic, god-like figures, their faces twisted in absolute agony. Their veins were glowing, and their golden blood was being systematically drained through massive, hollow tubes, pouring directly into a giant, grotesque chalice held by a faceless, many-winged angel standing at the top of the tower.
At the bottom of the mural, a single line of ancient runes was carved.
As Zyren stared at the writing, the system interface in his mind slowly translated the words.
“The Great Betrayal. The gods did not fall. They were harvested.”

Chapter 67: The Dust Cloud
"Careless is a luxury we stopped being able to afford about three hundred miles back," Zyren said, not looking up from the embers. His voice was a low, rhythmic rasp that scraped against the silence of the hut. "You didn't show the pendant because you were careless. You showed it because you still think there’s a world left where that crest means something other than a bounty. It doesn't."Lyra’s breath hitched, a sharp, stabbing sensation blooming in her side where her ribs had been fractured during the skirmish at the border. She forced her eyes open, the dim orange glow of the dying firelight dancing painfully across her vision. "And what does it mean to you, Zyren? Or are you just avoiding the question?"Zyren stilled. The charred stick in his hand turned to ash as he squeezed it. "It means someone is going to kill us for it. That’s all the meaning it requires.""You were one of them," she pressed, her voice trembling not from the fever now, but from a sudden, sharp clarity. "I sa
Chapter 66: The Shared Scar
"The merchant," she mumbled, her head lolling against the uneven stone floor, her eyelids fluttering with the weight of a thousand lead weights. "He knew, Zyren. He saw the seal on the pendant. He knew exactly what it was worth, and he knew exactly whose throat to cut to get it."Zyren moved away, the sharp scrape of his boots against the grit sounding like a gavel in the cramped, airless space of the shepherd’s hut. He knelt by the small, dying fire he had coaxed to life, poking at the embers with a piece of charred wood. The sparks drifted upward, dying against the cold, damp ceiling. He didn't look at her, but his shoulders were hunched, a cage of coiled muscle and hidden tension."The merchant doesn't matter," Zyren said, his voice flat, stripped of the usual caustic wit he used to keep the world at bay. "He’s a scavenger. They always look for carrion. You were just unlucky enough to be the only piece of meat on this road.""I was careless," Lyra pushed out, her voice ragged. She
Chapter 65: Night Fever
The world had dissolved into a disjointed mosaic of searing heat and freezing shivers. Lyra stared at the ceiling of the shepherd’s hut, but the stone rafters kept liquefying, turning into writhing gray serpents that dripped thick, viscous tar onto her skin. She tried to scream, but the sound lodged in her throat like a dry stone."Drink," a voice commanded. It wasn’t just a command, it was an anchor. Zyren’s calloused palm hooked behind her neck, lifting her head with practiced, clinical efficiency. The rim of a waterskin pressed against her cracked lips. She swallowed, the liquid tasting of stale leather and grit, but it was salvation."I can’t… I can’t breathe, Zyren," she gasped, her voice sounding thin and alien to her own ears."Breathe shallow," Zyren replied. He was hunkered over her, his silhouette blocking out the moonlight that bled through the gaps in the stone walls. "The fever is spiking again. Your ribs are angry, Lyra. Keep your core still.""The merchant," she murmure
Chapter 64: The Bluff
The air in the dry creek bed felt thick enough to chew, smelling of pulverized stone and the copper tang of Lyra’s own spreading fever. Zyren shifted his stance, his hand dropping to the pommel of his blade. He didn't look at her; he looked at the horizon, where a thin, shimmering ribbon of dust heralded the approach of the spice caravan."You aren't in a state to bargain, Lyra," Zyren muttered, his voice barely audible over the wind. "If they have medicine, we take it. If they have eyes, we blind them. Don't make me do both.""We aren't bandits," Lyra wheezed, forcing herself to sit upright against the jagged rock. She felt the world tilt, the shadows of the creek bank stretching like skeletal fingers. "We are travelers in distress. That is the story. If you act like a wolf, they’ll treat us like prey.""You're bleeding through your tunic," he countered, pointing at her side with a callous nod. "You look like a corpse, and I look like a man who hasn't slept in a week. 'Travelers' doe
Chapter 63: A Merchant’s Price
The dry creek bed offered little in the way of shade, only a deeper, suffocating stillness where the heat gathered like stagnant water. Lyra crumpled into the dirt, her back pressed against the sun-blasted rocks. Her breath came in short, jagged whistles, each one a serrated blade scraping against her broken ribs.Zyren swung down from his mount, the leather of his saddle creaking in the oppressive silence. He moved with a predatory efficiency, checking the perimeter before turning his gaze toward her. His eyes, usually cold and calculating, flickered with a brief, unmasked shadow of concern before he shuttered them away."You’re burning up," Zyren said, kneeling in the dust. He reached for her, but Lyra recoiled, her hand gripping the hilt of her knife."Don't," she hissed, though the threat lacked any real bite. She pressed her free hand to her side, feeling the damp, slick heat of an infection blooming beneath her bandages. The skin around the wound felt tight, throbbing in time wi
Chapter 62: The Toll of the Road
The heat, once a mere annoyance, had hardened into a physical weight. It pressed down upon the parched plains like a leaden shroud, baking the cracked earth until the very air shivered with distortion. Lyra’s breath came in shallow, stuttering gasps. Every intake of air was a negotiation with the searing, jagged pain splintered deep within her side."Stop," Lyra rasped, the word tearing at her dry throat. "Zyren, stop. I need a moment."Zyren didn't look back immediately. He rode for three more paces, his posture rigid, his hand hovering near the hilt of his blade a habit he’d developed over the last forty-eight hours of near-constant movement. He hauled his horse to a halt with a sharp, impatient jerk of the reins."We don't have 'moments', Lyra," he said, his voice stripped of all inflection. "We have miles. And right now, we’re losing the race against both the sun and the Vanguard."Lyra slid from her saddle, her legs buckling the instant they touched the sun-baked dust. She hit th
