The drizzle had faded to a damp mist clinging to the streets.

Miss Voss tall, composed, heels clicking followed Ethan out from under the bus stop canopy, both of them leaving the idling black SUV and its frustrated driver behind.

She’d given him thirty minutes. Thirty minutes to not only keep her attention, but to win it.

[Side Mission Timer: 00:29:47]

---

The system pulsed in Ethan’s vision.

[Skill Available: Urban Navigator (Level 1)]

Effect: Instantly identifies all nearby businesses, their current customer volume, and atmosphere rating.

Cooldown: 6 hours.

Ethan activated it without hesitation. A translucent minimap bloomed in his vision, dotted with tiny icons. One pulsed gold  Brew & Muse, a boutique café five blocks away with an atmosphere rating of 92%.

Perfect.

---

“This way,” he said.

Miss Voss didn’t move immediately. “You do realize my father’s driver is going to report this. He’ll assume you’re kidnapping me.”

Ethan smiled. “Then I guess we’d better make it worth the scandal.”

---

They were halfway down the block when trouble appeared.

A tall man in a charcoal suit stepped from a doorway ahead, blocking the sidewalk. Late thirties, slick hair, sharp eyes. He wasn’t a random stranger the way Miss Voss’s expression hardened told Ethan everything.

“Olivia,” the man said smoothly, ignoring Ethan completely, “you’re late. Your father is waiting.”

Miss Voss’s voice was cool. “Mr. Kane. I wasn’t aware you were personally in charge of my schedule.”

Kane’s gaze flicked to Ethan, sizing him up like a bug on the wall. “And who is this?”

---

The system flashed:

[Rival Detected: Kane Mercer – Influence Level: High.]

[Warning: Rival attempting to reduce Target Affection.]

---

Ethan’s options flickered into view:

Option 1: Engage in direct confrontation. (Risk: High)

Option 2: Redirect conversation with system-assisted manipulation. (Reward: +5% Affection)

He selected Option 2.

---

“Actually,” Ethan said easily, stepping forward, “I was just convincing Olivia to give me her opinion on a little business pitch I’ve been working on. But if she’s too busy…”

He let the words trail off, the system subtly amplifying the hint of challenge in his tone.

Olivia’s eyes narrowed at Kane  not at Ethan. “Business pitch?” she asked, curiosity pricking.

Ethan nodded. “Over coffee. Five blocks away. And I only have… twenty-six minutes left to win her over.”

---

[Affection Shift: +4%]

[Rival Effectiveness Reduced.]

---

Kane’s jaw tightened. “This isn’t a good idea.”

Olivia gave him a thin smile. “Neither is standing in the rain while someone else decides what I do with my time.”

And with that, she stepped past him, heels striking like gunshots on the wet pavement.

Ethan followed, resisting the urge to grin at Kane’s expression.

---

Brew & Muse was warm and softly lit, the air fragrant with fresh espresso and cinnamon. As they walked in, Ethan’s eyes caught on the barista a petite woman with honey-blonde hair, bright green eyes, and an easy smile that made strangers feel like regulars.

The system pinged again:

[Potential Target Detected: Compatibility 72%.]

[Note: Secondary targets can be pursued simultaneously for cumulative bonuses.]

---

Ethan glanced at Olivia, then at the barista, the timer in his head ticking down.

If he played this right, he could win the side mission and lay the foundation for something much bigger.
