Leo opened his eyes to the soft glow of warm recessed lighting.

He expected the stench of damp pavement or the harsh glare of an emergency room. Instead, he lay on a king-sized bed with thread-count sheets so plush they felt weightless against his skin. High ceiling-to-floor windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline at night. Fresh white lilies rested in a crystal vase on a mahogany nightstand beside his bed.

He tried to move his arms, expecting shattered bones and tearing pain from the truck impact. To his utter shock, his body felt completely whole, as if the heavy steel grill had never smashed into his ribs.

His phone sat on the nightstand, connected to a rapid charger. The screen lit up with a new notification.

Leo reached out and picked up the device. A text message from Andres stared back at him.

The driver said you were still breathing when the ambulance pulled up. Lucky bastard. You have less than two hours until midnight to bring me my fifty thousand dollars. If you die in that hospital, I am going to your sister's room to collect what she owes me.

Rage and cold realization flooded Leo's chest. Andres had not been waiting at his apartment. Andres had sent that truck to run him down in cold blood. The loan shark intended to murder him and harvest whatever he had left.

"How am I alive?" Leo whispered aloud to the empty, luxurious room. "Who brought me here?"

The air conditioner vent suddenly stopped humming. The digital clock on the wall froze mid-second at 10:14 PM. A dropped vase of water on the side table suspended its falling droplets in mid-air.

Red text burned directly into the space above his bed, glowing like hot iron.

[Emergency Soul Link Established.]

[Constellation 'Sovereign of the Absolute' has entered the channel.]

[Channel 9042 Viewership: 520,000 High-Realm Observers.]

A harsh, resonant voice echoed inside Leo's mind, vibrating against his skull.

"You are alive because I allowed it, trash."

Leo flinched and looked around the frozen room. "Who is speaking? Where are you?"

"Look up, boy," the voice commanded. "You are addressing the Sovereign of the Absolute. I am the reason you are breathing inside the finest private VIP suite in this city."

Leo stared at the floating red text. "You paid for this room?"

"Do you honestly think I would let my chosen avatar lie on a threadbare mattress in a filthy public ward?" the Sovereign sneered. "My divine title is attached to you now. I do not do cheap. I do not tolerate dirt. If my presence touches a vessel, that vessel stays in absolute luxury."

"Avatar?" Leo asked, his mind spinning. "I do not understand. What is happening to me?"

Messages began rapidly scrolling across the bottom of the glowing interface.

[Constellation 'Merchant of the Golden Sun' says: Look at this pathetic mortal! You really chose a beggar who got flattened by a delivery truck?]

[Constellation 'Crimson Warlord' says: Three million divine coins wasted. He will not survive his first trial.]

"Ignore the noise from those mid-tier fools," the Sovereign ordered sharply. "Here is the reality of your situation, Leo. You humans believe you are the masters of your world. You are wrong. Your universe is a playfield, a live simulation staged for our entertainment. Other Constellations select champions, high-born heirs, martial geniuses, and wealthy CEOs, guiding them to conquer servers."

"And you chose me?" Leo asked.

"The high council dared me," the Sovereign said, his tone dripping with supreme arrogance. "They claimed I only win my wagers because I pick champions who already possess wealth, talent, and status at birth. They claimed I could never conquer a server starting from the gutter. So I made a bet. I declared that I could take a human who possesses absolutely nothing and turn him into the absolute ruler of this world."

Leo swallowed hard. "Absolute zero."

"Precisely," the Sovereign replied. "Zero stats. Zero wealth. Zero family support. Zero desire to live. You were lying in a pool of your own blood on a wet street, completely broken by the people around you. Your wife threw you out for a richer man. A loan shark sent a truck to end your life. You had hit rock bottom. That made you the perfect blank slate for my game."

"What happens now?" Leo asked quietly.

"You will fight for me," the Sovereign declared. "I will grant you access to the system market. I will give you missions, stats, and abilities that far exceed anything this world has ever seen. In exchange, you will climb the ranks. You will crush the avatars sponsored by other Constellations. You will make them grovel at your feet until my name reigns supreme over this entire universe server."

"And if I fail?"

The temperature in the room dropped instantly, a heavy pressure weighing down on Leo's chest.

"I do not play to participate," the Sovereign said, his voice lowering into a deadly promise. "I play to dominate. I never lose. If you hesitate, if you show mercy, or if you embarrass me in front of the high realm viewers, I will personally rip your soul from your chest and erase your existence."

A massive red prompt materialized in front of Leo's eyes.

[Contract Proposal: Sovereign of the Absolute]

[Main Objective: Reach Rank 1 in Universe Server 07.]

[Failure Penalty: Complete Soul Erasure.]

[Do you accept the terms? YES / NO]

"Your loan shark is coming for your sister," the Sovereign reminded him coldly. "Your wife is celebrating your downfall in a mansion built on your blood. You have no money, no power, and no future on your own. So tell me, Leo... are you going to lie there and let them crush you, or are you going to take my hand?"

Leo stared at the word YES.

He thought of Andres's threat. He thought of Elena laughing while he groveled on the carpet at her feet. He thought of his sister dying in a cold hospital room because he lacked the money to save her.

He had died on that asphalt as a weak, helpless victim. He was not going to die a second time.

Leo lifted his hand and pressed YES.

Leo had the hotel driver drop him at the bottom of the hill and walked the rest of the way up to the Leroy estate. As far as the Leroys knew, he was still a man who couldn't afford a bus ticket, and until the auction tomorrow night, he wanted them to go on believing it.The guard at the front gate recognized him from fifty feet away and kept his feet up on the desk. "Service road, Leo," he called through the window, pointing with his coffee cup toward the side of the property. "Mrs. Leroy's orders. Your stuff's out back by the garage. The rubbish truck comes at ten, so I'd hurry."The service road ran along the outside of the garden wall, past the greenhouse and the pool house, and ended at a concrete yard behind the garage where the staff kept the bins. There were three of them lined up against the wall, and Leo knew what he would find before he reached them, because a sleeve of his old work jacket was hanging over the lip of the nearest one.Four years in this house, and everything

The elevator doors slid open onto the parking level under Vane & Co., and Dominic was standing right in front of them.He had obviously been waiting a while, because he was halfway through another lap of pacing when the doors opened, and he turned around so fast that his jacket swung open. Behind him, the garage stretched away in long rows of concrete pillars and parked cars. Half the ceiling bulbs had burned out, and somewhere near the exit ramp a pipe was dripping onto the floor in a rhythm that never settled."There he is," Dominic said, spreading his arms with a grin that showed up a second too late to look natural. "The man of the hour."Leo stepped out and let the doors close behind him. The fitting had taken forty minutes, and at the end of it the tailor's assistant had announced, a little too proudly, that the Grand Palace's car was waiting for Mr. Leo on the lower level. Dominic must have been within earshot."Where's Elena?" Leo asked."Up in the car. I told her I had to sor

The sedan pulled away from the Grand Palace with Croft's black envelope still tucked inside Leo's jacket, and before the car reached the end of the block, he opened the system market."Sovereign," he said under his breath, keeping his eyes on the back of the driver's head. "I need to see what people are hiding. Is there anything for that?"The red interface unfolded in the air in front of him, and the familiar voice rolled into his head with open amusement. "You are asking for a skill? Not paper money, not a larger hotel room, but an actual skill?" The Sovereign made a sound that might have been a laugh. Eugene took a half-step forward, pointing a shaking finger at the matte-black card on the table. "Sir! You can't listen to this guy. He's a fraud! Look at what he's wearing. He probably stole that key card from room service or found it on the floor!" The broad-shouldered man did not even glance at Eugene. He kept his sharp, grey eyes fixed squarely on Leo. "Eugene," the man said softly. His voice was low, but it cut through the room like a cold knife. "You wear an off-the-rack polo, brag about a leased car, and make noise in a room full of working men. Pick up your racket and leave." Eugene’s face flushed a deep, burning red. He opened his mouth to protest, but one of the four heavy security guards took a single step forward, towering over him. Eugene swallowed his words, grabbed his graphite racket off the table, and hurried out of the lounge without looking back. His two friends quietly followed right behind him. The broad-shouldered man walked over to the table and picked up th

The high-rise suite was completely silent save for the faint hum of the central air. Leo sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, staring at the translucent system interface floating in the air before him. "What comes after this?" Leo asked, his voice low in the quiet room. "What is the second course of the market?" "You think this city is the entire game?" The Sovereign’s voice echoed in his mind, carrying a dry, amused rasp. "This is merely the warmup stage, boy. Right now, you are playing in a localized sandbox. But if Channel 9042 keeps pulling in high-realm viewers, the system automatically unlocks higher server phases." Leo tilted his head. "Higher phases?" "Stage clearing," the Sovereign said bluntly. "Dimensional incursions, territorial wars, and trial zones where you fight for survival against horrors that would turn your mortal mind to ash. Right now, you are arguing over paper money and hotel rooms. Enjoy the warm showers and soft sheets while you can. Not every stage wil
